The next morning, Adrian Blackwood arrived at his office earlier than usual.

He hadn't slept.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Elena standing at the apartment door with her suitcase.

Don't give me hope.

Her words had followed him throughout the night.

He had never thought of himself as a cruel man.

Cold, perhaps.

Demanding.

Obsessed with work.

But cruel?

No.

Yet Elena had looked at him as though he had destroyed her.

And for the first time, Adrian wondered if she was right.

He entered his office and dropped his keys onto the desk.

“Good morning, Mr. Blackwood.”

His assistant, Daniel, followed him inside.

Adrian didn't answer.

He walked directly toward the windows.

The city was waking beneath him.

Normally, the sight gave him a sense of control.

Today, it meant nothing.

“Did you find out why the clinic contacted us?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Yes.”

Adrian turned.

“Well?”

“It concerns Mrs. Blackwood.”

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“Ex-wife.”

Daniel nodded.

“Sorry, sir.”

“Continue.”

“The clinic called because there was an issue with the payment information. Apparently, Mrs. Marlowe went there yesterday.”

Adrian frowned.

“For what?”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I couldn't get the complete medical details without authorization.”

Adrian's expression darkened.

“Then why did you come here?”

“Because I found something else.”

He placed a thin envelope on Adrian's desk.

Adrian stared at it.

“What is that?”

“Her appointment record.”

Adrian opened the envelope.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

Pregnancy Consultation.

For several seconds, Adrian couldn't breathe.

He looked at Daniel.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Adrian looked back at the document.

Pregnancy.

Elena.

The words didn't make sense together.

His mind immediately rejected the possibility.

Maybe she was helping someone.

Maybe the record was wrong.

Maybe—

He remembered the way she had looked yesterday.

The dizziness.

The pale face.

The way she had instinctively protected her handbag.

And then another memory returned.

The night five weeks earlier.

Adrian's breathing became heavier.

That night had been different.

He had come home after the company anniversary celebration and found Elena waiting for him.

They had talked.

Really talked.

For the first time in months.

There had been no arguments.

No business calls.

No distractions.

Only the two of them.

And that night, for a few hours, he had forgotten everything else.

Including the fact that he had already begun planning to leave the marriage.

Adrian closed his eyes.

“No.”

Daniel remained silent.

“Did she know?”

“We don't know.”

Adrian picked up the report again.

“When was the appointment?”

“Yesterday afternoon.”

“Where is she now?”

“We're trying to locate her.”

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“Trying?”

“She didn't leave a forwarding address.”

Adrian walked around the desk.

“Find her.”

“Yes, sir.”

“And Daniel?”

“Yes?”

“Don't tell anyone about this.”

Daniel nodded.

“Of course.”

He left the room.

Adrian remained alone.

He looked down at the pregnancy record.

A strange emotion spread through his chest.

Fear.

He had never been afraid of business negotiations.

Never feared competitors.

Never feared losing money.

But this terrified him.

If Elena was pregnant...

The child could be his.

He picked up his phone.

He called her.

The number was blocked.

He tried again.

Nothing.

He stared at the screen.

Then he called a private investigator.

“I need information.”

“About whom?”

“Elena Marlowe.”

There was a pause.

“My ex-wife.”

“I need to know where she went, who she's staying with, and whether she has left the city.”

The investigator answered immediately.

“I'll get started.”

Adrian ended the call.

He returned to the window.

For the first time since his father had built Blackwood International, Adrian had no idea what to do next.

Across the city, Elena sat in a small café.

Her suitcase was beside her.

She had spent the entire morning looking for a place to stay.

The flight was booked.

Her passport was in her handbag.

Everything was ready.

She only needed to survive one more night.

She looked down at her coffee.

She hadn't touched it.

Her phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

She ignored it.

It rang again.

Then stopped.

A message appeared.

You can't hide forever.

Elena's blood ran cold.

She looked around the café.

Everyone seemed normal.

A couple laughed at a nearby table.

A waiter carried plates toward the kitchen.

An elderly man read a newspaper.

Nobody was watching her.

Or at least, nobody she could see.

She deleted the message.

Her hands were shaking.

Who knew?

She hadn't told anyone about the pregnancy.

Not even her closest friend.

She had gone to the clinic alone.

She had paid privately.

She hadn't mentioned Adrian's name.

How could someone know?

Her phone vibrated again.

Another message.

You should tell Adrian before someone else does.

Elena froze.

She stared at the screen.

Then she immediately stood.

The chair scraped loudly against the floor.

The waiter looked at her.

“Madam?”

“I'm sorry.”

She grabbed her suitcase.

She left the café.

Outside, the street was crowded.

Elena walked quickly.

She didn't know where she was going.

She only knew she needed to get away.

She turned into a narrow street and stopped.

Her heart was pounding.

She looked behind her.

Nobody.

Maybe she was imagining things.

Maybe someone was trying to frighten her.

But the message had mentioned Adrian.

That wasn't a coincidence.

Her hand moved instinctively to her stomach.

“It's okay,” she whispered.

“We're okay.”

But she didn't believe herself.

That afternoon, Adrian received a call.

“We found something.”

He immediately stood.

“Where is she?”

“She booked a flight.”

“When?”

“Tomorrow morning.”

Adrian's face became expressionless.

“Destination?”

The investigator told him.

Adrian wrote it down.

Then he asked the question that had been haunting him since morning.

“Did you find anything about the pregnancy?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

Adrian's fingers tightened around the phone.

“What?”

“The clinic confirmed she is approximately five weeks pregnant.”

The room seemed to disappear.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Five weeks.

Exactly.

His mind returned to that night.

The anniversary celebration.

Elena.

His wife.

The woman he had spent three years pushing away.

The woman he had just divorced.

His child.

Adrian slowly sat down.

“Are you certain?”

“Yes.”

He ended the call.

For several minutes, he simply stared at the wall.

Then he whispered:

“My child.”

The words sounded unfamiliar.

But they felt right.

A strange warmth filled his chest.

Then guilt followed.

He had divorced Elena without knowing.

He had told her there was another woman.

He had let her walk away.

And now she was carrying his child.

Adrian stood suddenly.

He grabbed his jacket.

“Daniel!”

His assistant rushed into the office.

“Yes, sir?”

“Cancel everything.”

“Everything?”

“My meetings. Calls. Dinner. All of it.”

Daniel stared at him.

“Where are you going?”

Adrian picked up his car keys.

“To find my wife.”

Daniel hesitated.

“Your ex-wife?”

Adrian looked at him.

His expression was cold.

But his voice was different.

“She may be my ex-wife.”

He paused.

“But that child is mine.”

That evening, Elena returned to the apartment.

She packed the last few things.

She checked her documents three times.

Then she sat on the edge of the bed.

Her phone remained silent.

For a moment, she felt relieved.

Maybe whoever had sent the messages had stopped.

Maybe tomorrow she would finally disappear.

She closed her eyes.

A knock sounded at the door.

Elena opened her eyes.

Another knock.

Her heart started racing.

She approached the door cautiously.

“Who is it?”

No answer.

She looked through the peephole.

The hallway was empty.

Elena stepped back.

Then her phone vibrated.

One new message.

She opened it.

Look outside.

Her blood froze.

Slowly, she moved toward the window.

She pulled the curtain aside.

A black luxury car was parked across the street.

The driver's door opened.

A tall man stepped out.

Elena recognized him immediately.

Adrian.

He looked up.

Their eyes met through the glass.

Elena's hand flew to her stomach.

Adrian stood beneath the streetlight, staring directly at her apartment.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

“I'm here.”

A voice replied from the other end.

Adrian's eyes never left Elena.

“Good,” the voice said.

“Now tell her the truth.”

Adrian frowned.

“What truth?”

The caller laughed quietly.

“The truth about why you divorced her.”

The call ended.

Adrian slowly lowered his phone.

And Elena realized something terrifying.

Maybe the divorce had never been about another woman.

Maybe someone had deliberately destroyed their marriage.

And that person knew exactly where she was.
