Chapter 30 — The Final Selection

The chamber doors locked behind them.

CLANG.

Elena turned immediately.

“Open them!”

Nothing happened.

She looked at Jonathan.

He shook his head.

“The system has started.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Started what?”

Jonathan stared at the woman inside the transparent chamber.

“The final selection.”

The original Elena opened her eyes.

She looked directly at the woman standing outside.

“Don't be afraid.”

Elena's voice trembled.

“You're me.”

The woman smiled sadly.

“Yes.”

“Then why does the system want one of us dead?”

“Because it can't sustain two primary carriers.”

Elena looked at Lucas.

“And him?”

The original Elena's expression softened.

“He is the solution.”

Lucas stepped forward.

“I don't want anyone to die.”

The original Elena smiled.

“Neither did I.”

A low mechanical hum filled the chamber.

The system spoke.

“FINAL SELECTION INITIATED.”

Two circles appeared on the floor.

One beneath Elena.

One beneath the original Elena.

“PRIMARY CARRIER A.”

“PRIMARY CARRIER B.”

Elena looked down.

“Which one am I?”

Jonathan whispered:

“B.”

She looked at the woman inside the chamber.

“And she's A?”

“Yes.”

The original Elena shook her head.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

“The system doesn't know which one is original anymore.”

Elena stared at her.

“Then how will it decide?”

The woman answered:

“By memory.”

The chamber suddenly filled with light.

Elena gasped.

Images appeared around her.

Her childhood.

Her first day at school.

Her first birthday.

Her first argument with Jonathan.

Her first meeting with Adrian.

Her wedding.

Her pregnancy.

Lucas's birth.

Every memory played like a movie.

Elena covered her ears.

“Stop!”

The original Elena screamed too.

The memories were appearing around both women.

Adrian watched helplessly.

“What's happening?”

Jonathan answered:

“The system is comparing them.”

“Comparing what?”

“Memories.”

Lily stared at the images.

“But they have the same memories.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“Not exactly.”

The system displayed the first question.

“WHAT WAS THE FIRST WORD SPOKEN BY THE PRIMARY CARRIER?”

Elena froze.

The original Elena answered immediately.

“Mother.”

The system remained silent.

Elena closed her eyes.

“I said…”

She remembered.

“Lily.”

Lily gasped.

“Yes.”

The system flashed.

MATCH: FALSE.

Elena stared.

“No.”

The original Elena looked at her.

“I'm sorry.”

The second question appeared.

“WHAT DID THE PRIMARY CARRIER FEAR MOST AS A CHILD?”

The original Elena answered:

“Being abandoned.”

Elena whispered:

“Being forgotten.”

The system flashed again.

MATCH: FALSE.

Elena's heart sank.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Wait!”

The system ignored him.

The third question appeared.

“WHO WAS THE FIRST PERSON THE PRIMARY CARRIER LOVED?”

The original Elena looked at Adrian.

“My husband.”

Elena answered:

“My mother.”

Silence.

MATCH: FALSE.

Adrian looked at Elena.

She began crying.

“I don't understand.”

The original Elena looked at her.

“You don't remember because they changed your memories.”

Elena shook her head.

“Then why do I feel everything?”

“Because memories aren't the only thing they couldn't copy.”

“What?”

The original Elena smiled.

“Your soul.”

The system suddenly changed.

“MEMORY TEST FAILED.”

“EMOTIONAL RESPONSE REQUIRED.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“What does that mean?”

The original Elena looked at him.

“It means the system will test what we feel.”

Elena stared at her.

“How?”

The chamber filled with darkness.

A single image appeared.

Lucas.

He was crying.

Elena immediately ran toward him.

“Lucas!”

But the image was only a projection.

The original Elena remained still.

The system spoke.

“PRIMARY CARRIER B: EMOTIONAL RESPONSE DETECTED.”

Elena grabbed her chest.

“Of course I reacted!”

The original Elena looked at her.

“That's why you'll win.”

Elena froze.

“What?”

“You love him.”

“So do you.”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

“Because I created him.”

Elena shook her head.

“He's my son too.”

The original Elena smiled.

“I know.”

She turned toward Lucas.

“Come here.”

Lucas approached her.

He looked confused.

“Are you my mommy too?”

The original Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

Lucas looked between the two women.

“Which one?”

Neither answered.

Then Lucas walked toward Elena.

He wrapped his arms around her.

“You.”

The original Elena closed her eyes.

Elena held him tightly.

“Why me?”

Lucas whispered:

“Because you were there.”

The original Elena smiled.

“He remembers.”

The system flashed.

“PRIMARY CARRIER B CONFIRMED.”

Everyone froze.

Elena stared at the screen.

“I'm B.”

Jonathan nodded.

“You're the carrier.”

The original Elena smiled.

“Good.”

Elena turned toward her.

“But you're my mother.”

“Yes.”

“I'm not letting you die.”

The original Elena shook her head.

“I don't have much time.”

The cables around her began glowing.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Can we disconnect her?”

Jonathan shook his head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Her consciousness is integrated into the system.”

Adrian looked at the cables.

“Then transfer it.”

Jonathan stared at him.

“To where?”

“Into Elena.”

Everyone froze.

The original Elena looked at Adrian.

“You know what that means?”

“No.”

“She could lose herself.”

Elena stepped forward.

“I'll do it.”

Adrian grabbed her hand.

“No.”

“She is my mother.”

“You could die.”

“So could she.”

Adrian looked at the original Elena.

“Is there another way?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Lucas suddenly spoke.

“There is.”

Everyone turned.

“What?”

Lucas looked at the central core.

“The machine is lying.”

Jonathan stared.

“What do you mean?”

“It says only one can live.”

The original Elena's eyes widened.

“How do you know?”

“Because it told me.”

Elena knelt.

“What did it tell you?”

Lucas pointed toward the core.

“It said there were always two.”

Jonathan's face changed.

“No.”

“What?”

“The system was designed with a dual-consciousness protocol.”

Adrian frowned.

“Then why did it initiate a selection?”

Jonathan looked at Victoria.

She was standing silently near the entrance.

“Because someone disabled the protocol.”

Everyone turned.

Victoria smiled.

“I did.”

Adrian raised his weapon.

“Why?”

“Because the Foundation needed one carrier.”

Elena glared at her.

“You wanted me dead.”

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because if both carriers survived…”

She paused.

“…the Foundation would lose control.”

The original Elena whispered:

“They were afraid of us.”

Victoria laughed.

“Not you.”

She pointed toward Lucas.

“Him.”

Suddenly, Victoria pulled a small device from her pocket.

Jonathan shouted:

“No!”

She pressed the button.

Lucas screamed.

Elena grabbed him.

“Lucas!”

The boy collapsed.

His eyes turned silver.

The central engine activated.

TRANSFER PROTOCOL FORCED.

The original Elena screamed.

“Stop!”

Victoria smiled.

“It's too late.”

The cables surrounding the original Elena began pulling away.

Her consciousness started transferring.

Elena felt a burning sensation in her chest.

She fell to her knees.

“Mom!”

The original Elena looked at her.

“Don't fight it.”

“I can't!”

“Trust me.”

The light grew brighter.

Adrian tried to reach Elena.

A barrier stopped him.

“Elena!”

She screamed.

“Adrian!”

“I love you!”

“I love you too!”

Lucas suddenly stood.

His eyes were completely silver.

He looked at Victoria.

“You hurt Mommy.”

Victoria froze.

Lucas raised his hand.

Every machine in the chamber stopped.

“You don't get to do that.”

Victoria dropped to her knees.

“No…”

Lucas walked toward her.

“You made the machine angry.”

Victoria began trembling.

“Please…”

Lucas looked at Elena.

“Should I stop?”

Elena stared at Victoria.

She could have ordered him to destroy her.

Instead, she shook her head.

“No.”

Lucas lowered his hand.

Victoria collapsed unconscious.

The light disappeared.

Silence.

Elena opened her eyes.

She was lying on the floor.

Adrian was beside her.

“Are you okay?”

She touched her chest.

“Yes.”

Then she heard another voice.

Inside her mind.

“Hello, my daughter.”

Elena froze.

“Mom?”

The voice answered.

“Yes.”

Elena began crying.

“You're inside me.”

“Not exactly.”

“Then where?”

“Everywhere you are.”

Elena closed her eyes.

She could feel her mother's presence.

Not controlling her.

Not replacing her.

Simply there.

The original Elena had survived.

The system had accepted both.

Jonathan stared at the monitors.

“The dual protocol is active.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Then the island won't destroy her.”

“No.”

“What happens now?”

Jonathan looked at Lucas.

“The system has two carriers.”

“And one controller.”

He stared at the child.

“But that's not all.”

A new message appeared.

MERIDIAN NETWORK: GLOBAL ACCESS ENABLED

Daniel's face went pale.

“What does that mean?”

Jonathan whispered:

“Lucas can now access every Meridian facility in the world.”

Elena stood slowly.

“Can he shut them down?”

Jonathan nodded.

“Yes.”

Lucas looked at his mother.

“I can.”

Elena knelt beside him.

“Then we shut them all down.”

Lucas smiled.

“But there's something you need to know first.”

“What?”

He pointed toward the screen.

A map appeared.

Hundreds of red points covered the world.

One location flashed brighter than the others.

WASHINGTON, D.C.

Elena stared.

“What's there?”

Lucas whispered:

“The people who created me.”

The screen changed.

A final message appeared:

PROJECT ETERNAL HEIR — PHASE TWO ACTIVATED.

Then another line appeared.

THE WAR FOR THE MERIDIAN HAS BEGUN.
