Chapter 1

All eyes were on Zachary Larson and me, but Zachary was looking at Julia Scott with eyes filled with pity. He didn't notice my pale face and trembling hands.

As if she was unaware of the tension in the air, Julia took a sip out of her glass and said affectionately, "Come to think of it, Zachary used to have an awful temper. I was the one who turned him into the caring gentleman he is now—perfect for my beloved sister."

She blinked teasingly. "Queenie, does he still try to sleep with you when you're on your period or insist that you wear the condom on for him with your mouth?"

Zachary remained silent. He didn't object, so he must have agreed.

He chuckled helplessly and pushed a plate of steak to Julia. "Eat well. Since you're going to be my sister-in-law, listen to me and take good care of your body."

It was as if he was blind to how upset I was. The suffocating tension around us didn't let up with Zachary's words and actions.

Julia's best friend, Layla Anderson, seemed oblivious to everything and chimed in.

"He's right, Julia. You're too picky with your food. You only eat what Zachary cooks for you.

"Back then, Zachary was so busy with work and frequently went on business trips. It made you so upset that you kept skipping meals. Your body couldn't handle it, so you lost your child."

I stared blankly at the food in front of me. I finally realized why Zachary insisted on cooking.

We had been married for three years. If it weren't for Julia, I wouldn't have even known that the man I shared a bed with could cook, though.

After taking the time to admire the pale look on my face, Julia suddenly apologized with feigned innocence, "I'm sorry, everyone. After not seeing them for three years, I ended up drinking so much. I also couldn't hold my tongue. I'll excuse myself and go freshen up."

She wobbled as she stood up and accidentally spilled wine on her dress.

Zachary immediately rose to his full height. He moved with practiced ease and said, "I'll take you to your room so you can change."

Enduring the pain in my stomach, I stood up and said, "Let me help—"

He pushed my hand away with a frown. "Don't. You'll just make things worse."

My hand froze in midair. It brought me back to the time when I wanted to change the curtains in the living room after we got married.

Zachary rejected the idea back then, saying, "It's too troublesome. Besides, didn't Julia say that this color's nice?"

In the end, we never changed them. Every corner of this home had another woman's touch.

They went into the guest room. After a while, she walked out of the room wearing his old dress shirt. The shirt highlighted her small frame and made her seem fragile.

She purposely rolled the sleeves up to show off an eye-catching men's watch on her wrist. It was the watch Zachary usually wore.

I had gifted him the watch on our first wedding anniversary.

She shook her wrist and smiled at me. "This watch looked pretty good, so I put it on to match this shirt. You don't mind it, do you, Queenie?"

Zachary looked at her with a soft smile. Then, he turned to me and said, "It looks good on her."

The pain in my stomach became excruciating. I dug my nails into my palms and swallowed the scream that almost escaped my mouth. The way they acted like they were the only ones in the room broke my heart.

I slowly sat back down and secretly scrunched up the pregnancy check-up report in my pocket. As I exhaled, the look in my eyes turned cold. I decided to talk to Zachary tonight.

Three years passed. The wedding venue was breathtaking.I stood under the spotlight with my arm wrapped around Caleb's. Wearing a long wedding gown and a sheer bridal veil, I looked to my side and met his stoic yet warm gaze.He whispered, "You look beautiful today, Queenie."The audience below the stage excitedly clapped for us. No one noticed a man in a faded work uniform hiding in the shadows of the opposite street, watching the scene from afar. It was Zachary. Scrunched up in his hand was a letter. Cut by the edge of the paper, his fingers were red. He couldn't bring himself to step forward, so he simply watched from the shadows. When I returned to the bridal suite after the wedding, my assistant handed me a letter. "Ms. Scott, someone left an anonymous letter for you."I opened the letter. Although the handwriting was messy, I knew it was Zachary's at first glance. The letter read, "Queenie, I know I don't have the right to say anything because I brought this upon myself

The night before Queenly Innovations hit the market, stress overwhelmed me. I was the last to leave the office. When I felt a familiar aching in my stomach, I finally remembered that I had forgotten to eat. When the elevator door opened, I saw that the lights in the lobby were still on, but no one was around. Caleb was leaning against the reception counter with an insulated bag beside his foot.Upon seeing me, he straightened up and frowned. "I knew you skipped lunch again. I'm just passing by. I brought stew."His tone was so casual that it sounded like he was talking about the weather. I was stunned. "Mr. Green, you—""It was convenient for me." He interrupted me and determinedly picked up the bag. "Eat it while it's still warm."We went to the break room. …The moment he opened the thermos, an appetizing scent filled the air.I could tell it wasn't takeout, but home-cooked. It had been left to simmer at the perfect temperature. When I took a sip, warmth filled my stomach.

The lighting was warm inside the live broadcast room. Wearing a simple suit, I calmly sat in front of the camera. The host asked cautiously, "Ms. Scott, what do you think about the recent online discussions about your divorce and your new company?"I smiled at the camera. "I divorced my ex-husband to fix the mistake I made in the past. The company is a new beginning for me. I don't regret any of my choices.""I heard that Larson Group's in a tough position lately. Are you—"I cut her off and explained calmly yet firmly, "I hope this is the last time I have to say this—I only care about Queenly Innovations' future."The people in the comment section went wild."You go, girl! That scumbag deserves it!""Nothing is more attractive than a career woman!""I heard that her ex-husband and the homewrecker turned on each other. Anyone got the scoop?"The interview received better traction than I expected. My composed and resilient image contrasted heavily with Zachary and Julia's dirty

Queenly Innovations' press conference was packed. I stood on the stage and briefly introduced our new product. The spotlight never left me. The people below the stage were either reporters or elites.During the question-and-answer session, the door suddenly slammed open. Zachary wore a wrinkled suit, his eyes bloodshot. He rushed past security and stumbled onto the stage.Shocked, the crowd aimed their cameras at him. He knelt before me and shouted in a hoarse voice, "Queenie, I'm sorry! I was wrong! What happened to our child and the company was all my fault! "Give me one more chance! I'm willing to make a public apology online. Please just give me one more chance!"The security guards rushed forward to hold him back, but he refused to release the microphone and continued to yell like a lunatic, "You're the one I love! It was just a momentary lapse of judgement!"…The video went viral that night. The hashtag for the incident, "#CEOOfLarsonGroupBegsForForgiveness", ranked fi

I was lying on a couch in a simple apartment at the other end of the city. Although my face was pale, my gaze was calm.My best friend, Wendy Lane, passed me a glass of water. "Stop thinking about him. There's no point in feeling sad over scum like him. Your health is more important."I shook my head and accepted the glass of water. "I'm not sad. I was just surprised that moving on wasn't as hard as I expected."Then, I pulled out my laptop and opened my business plan. "This is the launch plan for my new company. Take a look at it and tell me what can be refined."Wendy took a close look at it and gave me her suggestions from time to time. The sky was slowly darkening outside the window, but the room remained bright from the warm glow of the fluorescent lights inside. As I read the document, I lightly caressed my stomach. The emptiness stung, but all that remained was pain. My tears had dried up. I would only live for myself from now on.Queenly Innovations' launch shook the enti
