LIORA

My eyelids flapped open and right above me was a white ceiling.

It was a bit too bright for my eyes, and it held a long fluorescent tube running down the middle of it.

Somewhere to my left a machine was beeping, in no hurry at all. I lay there and looked at it, and for a few seconds I honestly could not think where I was.

Then I turned my head and saw a man in a white coat reading a chart at the foot of the bed.

“Ah,” he said, looking up. “You’re awake.”

I tried to sit up and my head ob

DORIAN"Mr. Dorian?"I looked up.Eleven faces were turned toward me down the length of the boardroom table, and the finance director, Marlowe, stood at the head of it with a laser pointer in his hand and a patient expression. Behind him, on the wall, a chart glowed. I had been looking at it for some time. I could not have said what it showed."Forgive me," I said. "Go back.""The year-end summary, sir. Profit after tax is up eleven percent on last year. The Meridian closing carried most of it." He moved the red dot along a bar. "The board would like the annual report signed off by the thirtieth, and the budget for the first quarter reviewed before the holidays. If you are content with the figures.""I am.""Content with the bonus pool?""Yes.""Then we only need the..."He went on. I made myself listen. It was the last full week of the year, and the whole fourteenth floor had the look it always had at that time: boxes of files in the corridors, a tray of foil-wrapped plates on

DORIAN“Did you hear what your mother asked me?”Seraphine turned to me before the front door had even closed. She stood in the middle of the hall with her coat still on and her orchid box empty in her hands, and her voice shook on the last word.Liora was already halfway to the stairs. She had not spoken since the car. She had sat beside me all the way home with her face turned to the window, and when Mr. Pryce stopped at the steps she had got out before I could open the door for her. Now she paused with one hand on the rail.“I’m going to lie down,” she said, to nobody in particular. “It was a long lunch.”“Of course,” I said. She went up. I listened to her footsteps cross the landing, one at a time, and a door close softly. I had learned that this was how she left a room now. She did not slam anything. She simply went, and the room felt like it had more space in her absence.“Dorian.”I turned. Seraphine’s eyes were full.“Come and sit,” I said, and took the box from her hands, and

LIORAI knew it was not the rosiest season in Dorian's and my marriage life. I knew that after what would finally be our divorce, it was only fair that everyone moved on to what gave them joy. Yet, why did this news make my heart drop completely? At the counter, Marco’s spoon stopped halfway around the pot. Vivienne’s glass hung an inch above the table. I felt the bread in my hand go still, and for a second the only sound in that enormous bright kitchen was the faint tick of something cooling on the stove. I looked at Dorian. He had not moved either. But I knew his face, and I knew that this was not the stillness of surprise. His eyes went to Seraphine, then to me, then to his mother, and I watched the color leave his face by degrees. He did not say a word.‘Don’t tell my mother anything about the divorce.’ He had stood in the hall only that morning and said it to me. And here was somebody else telling her something else entirely, surprising to me even, and he was looking at us like

  • Divorcing Him Before Christmas    Chapter ~ Twenty - Two

LIORA I looked at him for a moment before I answered. It was a quarter to midnight. I didn't need anyone to explain what his position meant. He had been about to go out and look for me. It was a fair question. I made myself see that. Whatever was left between us, we were still married, and a wife who came in at midnight without a word would have been asked the same thing in any house in the city. If it had been the other way round, if Dorian had walked in at this hour, I would have asked it too. I had asked it, in the early years, before I learned that it only made the evenings longer. “From Ansel’s family’s house,” I said. “The rain kept us there. I texted Greta.” “I know. She told me.” “Then you know I was safe.” His jaw moved. His hand closed around the keys until his knuckles turned pale, and I watched him draw a breath through his nose. He let the breath out, slowly, and his shoulders came down. I did not mention it. I did not know why he was doing it, and I was to

LIORAAnsel Wadeleen I had known him for as long as I could remember knowing anyone. He was the second of three children, and the only one who had ever wandered off the family’s path. His mother and mine had been girls together on the same street, long before she married the heir in the Wadeleen house. The marriage changed her address, but not the friendship. Every Christmas Eve, Auntie Cordelia came to our house, and every Christmas Eve a serious boy with watchful eyes, who had tagged along with his mother, sat at our kitchen table and ate whatever my mother put in front of him. At the same time, the two women argued over little things.By the time I was twelve, I depended entirely on him. He walked me home from school along the wall with my bag over his shoulder. Once, a girl in my class told me my shoes were ugly, and he stood at the gate every afternoon for a week until she apologized. Somewhere in those years, with no moment I could point to, our relationship began to feel mo

LIORA Ansel’s mom put down the spoon, and wiped her hands on the apron, then came across the stone floor with her arms already out. It had been a long while since I had last seen her. She had been softer around the edges then. Now, she was straighter, and more exact, and had a thin gold ring on her finger and nothing else, but when she took my face in her hands her palms were warm, and she looked at me for a long moment, directly, and did not look away.“My Princess, you are so grown.”“Auntie,” I replied. My voice did something odd.She pulled me into a warm hug that lasted for a while before she let me go.“Mrs. Lyle,” she said over her shoulder, to the cook, “you may go and put your feet up. I will call you if I need you.”“Madam,” said the cook unhappily, “if you would allow me to…”“No,” Auntie Cordelia frowned. “This one is mine.”“Yes, Madam.” The cook went out, throwing a dark look at the pot.Ansel had already pulled out a stool for me at the long table and was moving towa
