Chapter 2

Author: Progressive Apple
That afternoon, I arrived on time at my mother-in-law's house. However, this time, I did not bring over packages of what she wanted to her house just to get into the good graces of Henry's family.

When I stepped into the living room, I caught Henry peeling a grape and feeding it to Ivy. Ivy was smiling coquettishly as she leaned into Henry's arms. A look of delight flashed in her eye when she saw me coming inside. "Henry, I want to have a bite of the tip of that strawberry."

Henry picked up the sweetest part of the strawberry and fed it to her without hesitation. In return, he kept the sourest part of the berry for himself.

I lowered my head. I was suffocating from how hurt I felt about this.

"Tessa, where are the things I asked you to bring?" My mother-in-law stared at me while asking me the question.

I shrugged stoically and replied, "I didn't bring anything, and I won't be bringing anything from now on."

My mother-in-law lost her temper right away as she went off on me. "What you did is unacceptable! How did your parents raise you?! How dare you lose your temper like this in our house? I must have been cursed with seven years of bad luck for having a daughter-in-law like you! Get out right now and buy what I wanted back here. Otherwise, don't even bother coming back!"

It chilled me to the bone to hear what my mother-in-law was saying to me. Henry's company would have gone bankrupt long ago if I had not helped him out financially, and their entire family would have ended up homeless. Yet, they found it acceptable to degrade and yell at me, while Henry would always allow his parents to push me around this way.

I took out the divorce papers from my bag without hesitation. "In that case, we should get a divorce. I don't really want to come back here, anyway."

My mother-in-law was shocked, while Henry forgot about Ivy as he frowned and stared at me. He came up to me and tore up the divorce papers right in front of me. He looked quite upset about it. "What are you trying to pull, Tessa?"

Ivy came over to my mother-in-law and Henry's side right away to comfort them. "Mom, Henry, don't be mad. I have no idea why Tessa would be so upset about me, and always allowing her imagination to run wild, thinking that there is something between Henry and me.”

"But for the sake of peace in our family, I'll leave. I shouldn't continue to stay in this world after my husband died." Tears streamed down Ivy's face as she said all this.

My mother-in-law pointed at me and started yelling, "Do you really need to cause all this trouble at home?! Ivy has been taking care of me since she married into this family. I'd be grateful if you were even a fraction as understanding as she is. She is Henry's sister-in-law, and it's only right that he takes care of her. Stop being ridiculous about this!"

Henry wiped away the tears from Ivy's face tenderly as he cajoled her softly, "This isn't your fault, Ivy. Stop crying. It hurts to see you cry."

It felt like a bucket of icy water had been dumped on me, making me shiver to the core. Since marrying Henry, I had been working hard at his company to network and build connections, which helped with his company's success, while all Ivy did was be a freeloader at home as everyone doted on her.

"This family can only have one of us. It's either her or me." Henry slapped me hard right after I declared this. My eyes turned red as I held my hand to my swollen cheek.

"You're getting brazen, Tessa! I never should have let you have your way all the time and pampered you into becoming such an incorrigible person. What's wrong with me taking care of my sister-in-law? Stop filling your head with dirty thoughts!"

I retorted stubbornly, "Does taking care of your sister-in-law consist of helping her put on her heels and kissing her foot? You know very well if your relationship is innocent or dirty!"

Henry was so mad that he kicked me to the ground, and his tone with me got even more vicious. "Kneel and apologize right now, Tessa, or get out of here!"

It felt like a knife to my stomach. I did not apologize, and I dragged myself heavily out of there. Henry's voice continued coming from behind me as his yelling hurt my eardrums, "If you think you're so great, don't ever step foot here again, Tessa!"

Henry stopped harassing me after that, and he signed the divorce papers without a fuss. After successfully divorcing him, I left the country with Myles. My life had been limited within this city for years, and I wanted to breathe the fresh air in another place. With Myles by my side, I was happily fed with good food even though I was in another country. He always knew what I loved to eat.Myles knew Country M really well, and he brought me to visit his alma mater. I looked enviously at the university students on the campus and was reminded of my university life, where I spent four years focusing only on Henry. I did not spend much time studying seriously. I wasted a big chunk of my youth. The envious look in my eye had probably caught Myles' attention, and he hugged me tightly in his arms. "Tessa, do you want to study at this university?"I was hesitant. "But…"Myles said to me seriously, "You don't need to worry about anything. I'll always be here, by your side. I'll help you wit

The next day, I bumped into Henry, who had become homeless on the streets. When he saw me, he came up to me hopefully as he knelt at my feet. "My company has gone bankrupt, Tessa, and my house has been mortgaged because I'm millions in debt.”"My mother has been admitted to the hospital because she suffered a cerebral infarction from the agitation. Please forgive me. I know your company has lots of money, and a few million is nothing to you."I saw blood trickling down his knees, but I felt no sympathy for him. "You brought this on yourself, Henry. Without me networking and bringing in investors for your business, you'd have hit rock bottom way sooner. You know firsthand how you treated me despite all I did for you."Henry was full of regret. He looked completely defeated. "I made a mistake. Can't you give me another chance?"I flung the medical report of my miscarriage onto Henry's face. "When you hit me because of Ivy, you caused me to suffer a miscarriage. You killed our baby wi

I stepped into my home to see my parents waiting anxiously for me in the living room. They quickly came up to me and hugged me the moment they saw me. "You're finally home, my little girl. Do you have any idea how worried we were?"Tears streamed down my mother's face as she saw how gaunt I looked. "This is all my fault, Tessa. You wouldn't have endured all this pain if I had just stood my ground and prevented you from marrying."I shook my head, tears welling up in my eyes. "This is all on me, Mom and Dad. I shouldn't have defied you and chased after love. I shouldn't have let anger keep me away from home and from you both."Our family of three hugged each other tightly. My mother quickly ran into the kitchen to serve me the bouillabaisse she had made for me. "I spent the entire day making your favorite bouillabaisse."I choked back a soup as I drank the hot bouillabaisse. Tears welled in my eyes once more. It tasted great, and it warmed my heart. I was reminded of how I made Henr

One month later, my BMI returned to normal, and Myles helped me pack up as I got discharged from the hospital. I did not expect Henry to be waiting for me outside the hospital doors. He was crying as he knelt at my knees. "Tessa, please forgive me. I can't live without you!"I glanced at Henry. In just one month, he aged a lot. He had stubble, messy hair, and crumpled clothes. Henry appeared pale and unkempt. "Tessa, my stomach is working up again without you by my side. You used to prepare warm soup to soothe my stomach and place my medication in my bag in advance. I really need you. If you really need to vent your anger, just beat me up."Henry became increasingly crazier and started to slap himself. "I'm to blame for all of this. You can beat me up however much you want, Tessa! I'll do anything as long as you stop being mad at me!"The passersby in front of the hospital stopped to watch the scene. "What a devoted guy he is.""Yeah. He's already kneeling and slapping himself to

He had reminded me of the innocent life that I miscarried. Henry's voice grew quieter as he noticed the icy expression on my face. With no desire to engage with him anymore, I turned to Myles and said, "Let's go. I need to get out of here."Just as we were about to leave, my phone started ringing. I picked it up to hear my mother-in-law speaking softly to me from the other end of the phone in an attempt to get into my good graces. "This was all my fault, Tessa. Please don't waste your temper on someone as old as me. I'll make some chicken soup to warm you up, all right? You should come home with Henry for a good meal with the family.”"We're a family, after all, and we shouldn't be fighting like this. Don't make it awkward for everyone over a small matter like this." My mother-in-law had always looked down on me since I married into their family, and she was constantly belittling me. This was the first time I had ever heard her speak so nicely to me. I sneered. "It's too late for y

The man had a deep and authoritative voice, and Henry was shocked to see who he was. "Mr. Langson, what are you doing here? What do you mean by the daughter of the Eckers? I'm sure you're mistaken because Tessa is just an ordinary woman."Henry tried to explain timidly, but he turned pale when he saw Myles Langston hold me in his arms. He started muttering fearfully, "There is only one Eckers family who are the richest in Capital City, and it's impossible that Tessa is a member of that family!"Myles caressed my red, swollen cheek gently while speaking softly to me, "I'm sorry I was late, Tessa." He was looking at me like I was the greatest treasure in the world, and I lowered my head shyly when my eyes met his passionate gaze. It had been many years since I had seen Myles, and I did not expect him to grow to be so handsome. Henry turned pale as he quickly crawled toward me. "Why didn't you tell me that you were a member of the Eckers family, Honey? I should have hit you, Honey. Yo
