LOGINCHAPTER 2
THE WOMAN HE NEVER FORGOT
Elena’s POV
The woman who disappeared four years ago has returned.
Then I stared at Damien, my ears rang and my hands were closed into fists.
No, not her, anyone but her.
I then forced myself to laugh but it sounded broken.
“You mean Sophia?”
Damien said nothing but I already knew the answer and my chest hurt.
For three years, Sophia had always been there, nobody talked about her, not directly but I knew, I always knew.
She was the woman he loved, the woman he lost, the woman he never forgot and the woman I could never compete with.
Then I swallowed hard.
“Where is she?”
His jaw tightened.
“That doesn’t concern you.”
I looked at him and then at the divorce papers and then back at him.
“So she comes back and suddenly our marriage is over?”
“Elena.”
“No.”
I shook my head and my eyes burned.
“You don’t get to say my name like that.”
His face showed nothing and I hated it, I hated how calm he looked and I hated how my heart was breaking while he stood there like nothing mattered.
The question slipped out before I could stop it.
“Did you ever love me?”
For the first time, he looked away, only for a second and then he looked back at me.
“Sign the papers.”
Something then broke inside me.
Three years, I loved him for three years, I waited for him for three years and this was what I got?
I then grabbed a pillow and threw it at him.
“You coward!”
The pillow hit his chest and fell but he did not move.
“Look at me!”
My voice shook.
“Tell me the truth!”
There was silence and I laughed again and this time tears ran down my face.
“Do you know how stupid I feel?”
Still nothing.
“Last night meant something to me.”
His eyes changed for a second and I saw it, I knew I saw it but it disappeared quickly and my heart hurt even more because that little reaction gave me hope and hope was dangerous.
I then wiped my tears.
“Get out.”
He looked at me.
“Elena.”
“Get out.”
I raised my voice.
“Leave.”
For a moment, I thought he would argue but instead, he turned around and walked away.
The door closed behind him and the room became quiet and then I stared at the divorce papers.
Then I sat on the bed and cried.
Hours passed, I didn’t know how long but by evening, I couldn’t stay in the mansion anymore.
I needed answers, I needed to see her, I needed to know what kind of woman could destroy my marriage just by coming back.
So I followed Damien, his car leaving the mansion and I followed behind.
Thirty minutes later, we arrived at a luxury hotel, expensive cars filled the entrance, reporters stood outside. I knew about this event.
The Moretti Foundation host it every year.
I then got out of my car and people recognized me immediately.
After all, I was still Mrs. Moretti, at least for now.
Inside, the hall was full of people, music played, people laughed and champagne flowed.
Everything looked perfect, I felt like I couldn’t breathe and then I saw Damien.
He stood near the stage, tall, handsome and powerful.
Everyone looked at him, including me.
As if my heart still belonged to him and maybe it did and I hated that.
Suddenly, people began whispering, and everyone turned toward the entrance.
Excitement spread through the room and I looked over and then I saw her.
Sophia
My breath caught.
She was beautiful, the kind of beauty that made people stop and stare, she had long dark hair, a beautiful dress and a perfect smile.
She walked through the crowd like she owned the place, people rushed toward her, they welcomed her and they smiled at her.
They celebrated her return and then I stood there watching.
Nobody noticed me, nobody cared that I was Damien’s wife because Sophia was here and suddenly I felt invisible.
A woman then walked past me.
“Oh my God. She’s back.”
Another woman nodded.
“I knew Damien never forgot her.”
“They belong together.”
My stomach twisted and then another woman joined them.
“Look at the way he’s looking at her.”
I then forced myself to look.
Damien was staring at Sophia and his eyes stayed on her.
The sight hurt and Sophia reached him.
For a second, nobody spoke and then she smiled and Damien smiled back.
My world crashed because I couldn’t remember the last time he smiled at me like that.
People started clapping, some even cheered and then I heard another whisper.
“The queen has returned.”
The queen. Then what was I?
A replacement? A mistake? Someone filling another woman’s place?
I then looked away. I couldn’t watch anymore.
Then something caught my attention.
Sophia placed a hand on her stomach and I frowned.
My eyes moved lower, and then I froze.
There was a small baby bump and my heart stopped.
No.
People were already whispering.
“The heir is finally coming.”
“I knew it.”
“The Moretti family finally has an heir.”
“Damien must be so happy.”
The heir, the baby and my vision blurred.
I then looked at Damien, waiting, praying and begging him to deny it.
Say something, anything, tell them they were wrong, tell them the baby was not yours, tell them this was a misunderstanding but Damien said nothing. Nothing at all.
And that silence destroyed me.
After that, everything became a blur and I left before anyone noticed before anyone saw me cry.
When I got home, my head hurt, my chest hurt, everything hurt.
I locked myself inside my room, my phone vibrated but I ignored it.
Then it vibrated again, and again.
Annoyed, I grabbed it.
It was an unknown number. A message.
My fingers shook as I opened it.
One sentence appeared on the screen.
“He is divorcing you because he thinks you betrayed him.”
I froze and my heart started beating faster.
What?
Before I could think, another message arrived.
A photo, attached below the message.
I opened it and my whole world sto
pped.
The photo showed me entering a hotel room with another man two years ago.
A photo I had never seen before.
CHAPTER 13THE ROOM OF MEMORIESElena’s POVThe voice belonged to someone inside Damien’s family.I sat in front of my laptop and I could not move.I replayed the video again and again and each time, the voice became clearer.I then closed my eyes.“She’s already been drugged.”The words echoed inside my head, I knew that voice, I had heard it during family dinners.I had heard it inside this mansion but no matter how hard I tried, I could not remember whose voice it was.It was like something inside my mind refused to let me remember.I then grabbed my head.“Who are you?” I whispered. The room stayed silent and I played the recording one more time and then I shut the laptop.I felt tired, my body felt heavy and my eyes burned.Too much had happened in one day, the divorce, the attack, the dead security guard, Sophia, the file, the video.Nothing made sense anymore.I then looked at the clock and it was past midnight and I slowly stood up.Maybe if I slept…My mind would become cleare
CHAPTER 12THE DEAD WITNESSElena’s POV“They found another body.”The bodyguard’s words made my heart stop and Damien’s face became serious.“Where?”“The east garden.”“Who found him?”“Two guards during their search.”Damien nodded.“Take me there.”The bodyguard looked at Damien’s bandaged shoulder.“Boss, you’re injured.”“I said take me there.”“Yes, Boss.”He turned to leave and Damien looked at me.“You’re coming with me.”I wanted to argue after everything that had happened, I wanted nothing more than to stay away from him but something told me this body mattered.I quietly nodded and we followed the bodyguard through the hallway.Several guards stood at every corner and the shooting had stopped but smoke still hung in the air.Broken glass covered the floor and the mansion looked nothing like the home I had lived in for three years. No one spoke and the silence felt heavy. After a few minutes, we stepped into the garden, more guards surrounded one area and they moved aside w
CHAPTER 11TRUST ME ONE LAST TIMEElena’s POV“Your wife attacked me.”Sophia’s words hung in the air, I stared at her and then my hands curled into fists.“What?”I almost laughed, it was not because it was funny but because I couldn’t believe what I had just heard.“You liar.”Sophia buried her face against Damien’s chest.“I only wanted to see if she was alright.”Her voice shook.“But she started shouting at me.”“I didn’t!” I cried.“I never touched you!”Sophia sniffled.“I don’t know why she hates me so much.”I looked at Damien.“Don’t listen to her.”He looked from Sophia to me and his face gave nothing away and I couldn’t tell what he was thinking. My heart beat faster.“Damien.”And then he finally spoke.“Sophia.”She looked up at him.“Go with Marco.”One of the bodyguards stepped forward.“Yes, Boss.”Sophia grabbed Damien’s arm.“I don’t want to leave you.”“You’ll be safe with him.”“But…”“Go.”His voice became firm and Sophia looked disappointed. She slowly nodded an
CHAPTER 10THE SCARElena's POV"You should have died twenty years ago."The words echoed inside my head and I stared at Sophia and then my mouth opened but no words came out.She knew, she knew something about my past, she knew about the fire, and she even knew about the file.My heart beat so hard that I could hear it and I forced myself to speak."What did you say?"Sophia smiled and then the smile disappeared almost as quickly as it came and she folded her arms."I don't know what you're talking about."I shook my head."No.""You just said I should have died."She looked at me with a confused face."I never said that.""You did!"My voice echoed through the hallway."I heard you."She sighed."I think you are under too much stress."I stared at her, she was lying and I knew she was.Only a few seconds ago, she had admitted everything and now she acted as if nothing had happened."Who were you talking to?" I asked."No one.""You were on the phone.""It was a friend.""You mention
CHAPTER 9THE WOMAN IN WHITEElena's POV"Are you safe?"The words hit me harder than the gunshots outside and I stood where I was and I couldn't breathe.A few seconds ago, Damien was looking into my eyes, a few seconds ago, his hand was on my face.Now...He was asking another woman if she was safe.Sophia.I lowered my head, maybe nothing had changed after all, maybe I was only fooling myself.I heard Damien speak again."Stay where you are."He paused."No. Don't come here."I closed my eyes and my chest hurt because I didn't want to hear anymore.Quietly, I stepped backward and he was still talking on the phone. He didn't notice me leaving or maybe… He did.And he didn't stop me and that thought hurt even more.I turned and walked toward the door and one of the bodyguards looked at me."Mrs. Moretti?""I just need some air.""Boss said you should stay inside.""I won't go far."He looked unsure."I'll be back."Without waiting for his answer, I walked into the hallway and the und
CHAPTER 8DON'T LEAVE MEElena's POV"Damien!"His body fell against me and I almost lost my balance. My hands caught him before he hit the floor and blood spread across his white shirt and then my heart stopped."No... no..."I looked at his shoulder, the bullet had torn through it and blood kept flowing. His face turned pale and his eyes remained open, but I could see the pain he was trying to hide."Boss!"Several bodyguards ran toward us and one of them raised his gun and fired toward the hill and another rushed to Damien."Boss, are you hurt?"Damien pushed him away."I'm fine.""You have been shot!""I said I'm fine."His voice was still firm, still powerful, it was as if being shot meant nothing to him and I grabbed his arm."No, you are not fine."He looked down at me and our eyes met.For one second, the shooting around us faded from my mind."You should have let it hit me," I whispered. His face hardened."Don't ever say that again.""But...""I mean it."Another gunshot ech
