CHAPTER 1THE NIGHT BEFORE THE DIVORCEElena’s POVI woke up with a smile on my face and for a few seconds, I lay on the bed and stared at the ceiling. My heart felt happy, warm and light and then I turned my head and looked beside me.Damien was gone, the other side of the bed was neat but my smile remained because for the first time in three years, I fell asleep in his arms and he stayed. Not for a few minutes, not until I closed my eyes, he stayed the whole night. My fingers moved over the bedsheet and I remembered the way he held me, the way he looked at me and the way he brushed my hair away from my face.My cheeks grew hot, and last night kept playing inside my head. We had dinner together, just the two of us.There were no bodyguards, there were no phone calls, and there were no business meetings and work, it was just us.It was like a normal husband and wife.I almost laughed. Normal? There was nothing normal about Damien Moretti. The entire city feared him, men lowered their

CHAPTER 3 THE BETRAYAL SHE NEVER COMMITTEDElena’s POVThe photo showed me entering a hotel room with another man two years ago, a photo I had never seen before.I stared at my phone and my fingers went numb and then my heartbeat rang against my ribs.“No…”The whisper left my lips and I zoomed in.My face, my hair, my dress.Everything looked like me, because it was me, I knew that dress. I bought it for Damien’s birthday dinner.I remembered wearing it, I remembered leaving the mansion, I remembered attending a charity auction and I remembered drinking wine.Then…Nothing.My breathing became uneven. Nothing. I remembered nothing after that. The phone slipped from my hand onto the bed and I grabbed it again. The unknown number was still there and I typed quickly.Who are you?The message sent.A second later, another text arrived.“ look at the date”.I immediately did.Two years ago. September 18.My stomach dropped. That date.I knew that date. I knew it very well because that w

CHAPTER 5 THE SECRET HE BURIEDElena’s POV The two mafia captains stood there and their eyes were locked onto mine. And they saw me listening. For one second, nobody moved, nobody spoke and my heart rang so hard that I could hear it.The taller man then narrowed his eyes.“Elena.”The way he said my name made fear crawl through me and I forced a smile.A stupid smile.“I was looking for Damien.”Neither man believed me and I could see it on their faces. The second man then took one step forward.“What did you hear?”My throat went dry.“Nothing.”A lie, a terrible lie.Because they knew I heard something and I knew I heard something and now everybody knew it.The taller man exchanged a look with the other and that look terrified me more than anything.I then took one step backward and then another and the second man smiled but it was not a friendly smile.“Mrs. Moretti.”My stomach twisted.“Come here.”Every instinct inside me screamed.Run. Run now. So I did.I spinned around and

CHAPTER 7THE FIRST BULLETElena's POV"They found you."Damien's words had barely left his mouth when another gunshot echoed through the mansion.Bang! The windows shook and someone screamed downstairs and then came another shot and then another. The sound of people running filled the hallway and my heart rang against my chest."What... what is happening?" I whispered.Damien did not answer, he was already moving and he grabbed my wrist and pulled me away from the office door."Stay behind me."His voice was low and firm. The Damien I knew was gone, the man standing before me now looked like the Mafia King everyone feared.Another gunshot rang out and then loud footsteps rushed toward the office and the door burst open.Three bodyguards ran inside with guns in their hands."Boss!"One of them was breathing hard."They broke through the front gate!"Another added, "More men are coming from the east side!""They have military weapons.""They are shooting everyone."Damien's face became

CHAPTER 9THE WOMAN IN WHITEElena's POV"Are you safe?"The words hit me harder than the gunshots outside and I stood where I was and I couldn't breathe.A few seconds ago, Damien was looking into my eyes, a few seconds ago, his hand was on my face.Now...He was asking another woman if she was safe.Sophia.I lowered my head, maybe nothing had changed after all, maybe I was only fooling myself.I heard Damien speak again."Stay where you are."He paused."No. Don't come here."I closed my eyes and my chest hurt because I didn't want to hear anymore.Quietly, I stepped backward and he was still talking on the phone. He didn't notice me leaving or maybe… He did.And he didn't stop me and that thought hurt even more.I turned and walked toward the door and one of the bodyguards looked at me."Mrs. Moretti?""I just need some air.""Boss said you should stay inside.""I won't go far."He looked unsure."I'll be back."Without waiting for his answer, I walked into the hallway and the und
