MasukValerie
This meeting is nothing but a sham. They have already judged me without caring about what I have to say. It's no secret that the elders of the pack has never liked me. They shared the same sentiment that a human has no place in their pack. “No,” I straighten, ignoring the sound of chain rattling on my hands. “I did no such thing.” But my words falls on deaf ears. In their minds, they have a verdict already. I am guilty. “We have good reason to believe that you did. I suggest you say the whole truth now, so as to lessen your punishment.” The whole truth? They don’t care about the truth. They don’t believe a word I say. My heart thumps loudly in my chest, but I school my expression, hiding my fear. “I am innocent.” Elder Fenris scowls, looking towards the door as if signaling for someone. Corvin walks in, a stack of papers in his hands. He places each document in front of each elder, then strides towards me. “Corvin?” I question, confusion surging through me. What is he doing here at my hearing? “What's going on?” Instead of giving me answers, he turns away, facing the elders. “Those are copies of Lord Caspian's medical records for the past few months,” he begins. “During his recent checkups, the healers noticed irregularities in his system. They warned him to check it out, but he didn't listen.” What on earth is Corvin talking about? Caspian has been completely healthy these past few months. I know that because I am his personal physician. “Luna Valerie was his physician. He had these checkups with another hospital. Even with all the proof presented to him, he couldn't believe that Luna Valerie didn't brief him of his condition. Because of his trust in her, his immune system deteriorated.” “Corvin!” I scream. “What the hell are you saying?” “Attached to the check up results are the autopsy results,” Corvin continues without sparing me a glance. “Truly, Lord Caspian was stabbed with a silver coated knife, but that's not the cause of his death. The wolfsbane in his system combined with the poison on the knife killed him.” Wolfsbane? That does it. The elders go into a frenzy, muttering curses and evidence of their disdain for me. Dazed, I stare at Corvin. When did he have this elaborate speech planned out? “You found wolfsbane in his system?” Elder Fenris’s loud voice reverberates in the hall. Corvin nods. “Traces of it, administered over a long period of time.” “Does this mean that Caspian has been injesting wolfsbane these past few months.” “Yes, Elder Fenris. And I believe Luna Valerie is responsible for that.” The room tilts. I stare at Corvin as if he's speaking a language foreign to me. Wolfsbane is lethal to wolves. Even trace amounts can kill them. If Caspian has been taking wolfsbane, there's no way I wouldn't have noticed. Helen stands so abruptly her chair scrapes the floor. “Who else would it be?” she snarls, thrusting her finger in my direction. “She gives him those pills every month. She's the only one he takes medication from. Who could have killed him?” “I didn't…” I stutter, dumbfounded. How did the narrative of Caspian's death spin in this manner? He was stabbed to death. I had no hand in it. “She keeps insisting he takes those pills.” Helen glares at me. “Who could have known that she was killing him slowly?” My eyes find Sebastian's. I can't figure out what he's thinking. Does he believe them or me? His jaw is clenched tightly, but that's about it. Elder Fenris leans forward. “Doctor Corvin, do you have proof of your allegations towards the Luna?” My heart pounds in my chest. Corvin nods. “In the hospital dispensary,” he says, “We found a vial concealed among Luna Valerie’s supplies with wolfsbane residue in it.” Helen slumps to the floor. Sebastian stands, barking out orders for the guards to take her to the infirmary. The elders mumble words I can't hear among themselves. The world starts to spin rapidly. I look at Corvin, my eyes rounded at his betrayal. Since I married into Bloodcrest pack three years ago and started working in the hospital, I have spent almost all my days with him. We have laughed together, mourned patients together, written papers together. It's hard to believe that he has turned against me too. “Why are you doing this?” My voice cracks despite my desperation to maintain composure. “I trusted you.” Corvin looks away from me, and in that moment, I realize that he has always seen me the way the other pack members did. A weak human. “I think this is all the proof we need,” Elder Fenris rises to his feet. “Valerie, it's a shame that someone in your position was despicable enough to do this.” I shake my head. “I didn't do it–” A sharp pain tears through my abdomen. Groaning, I sink to my knees, my eyes trailing to Sebastian. He averts his gaze, completely torn between believing me or the evidence that has been brought forward. “You know the law, Valerie,” Elder Fenris' voice rises in anger. “You not only killed a member of this pack, your victim was also once an Alpha.” He stops talking, thin creases appearing on his head. Elder Fenris had been close friends with Caspian. He must feel obligated to bring him justice. “For this, you are sentenced to death,” he says with a tone of finality. The people at his side nod in agreement. Just like that, I'm sentenced based on false evidence, without even getting a chance to defend myself. Murmurs circulate round the hall, drowning out anything have to say. “Enough,” Sebastian’s stern voice echoes in the tribunal hall. He walks towards the center to face the elders. For a brief moment, hope flickers in my chest. “She’s carrying the pack’s heir. We cannot risk harming the child. The punishment must not be carried out till the child is born." “That child should not be carried to term, Alpha,” Corvin remarks. “The child the Luna is carrying is not fit to be the heir.”ValerieI certainly didn’t hear him correctly. Maybe the pain from the metal rods piercing my leg has done something to me. It’s either that, or my ears are clogged.“Yes, Alpha,” the guards chorus fiercely. My ears are working fine. They march behind. Kai crouches to my level, his eyes trailing over me. Different emotions hit me all at the same time. Pain from the trap, embarrassment from my nakedness, shock from the declaration he just made about me being his luna. What did he mean by that?Does he recognize me? There’s no way he does. No one else did, so why would he recognize me? He drapes a coat over me, his eyes narrowed into thin slits. That stupid organ in my chest has picked an irregular rhythm, beating so hard I'm pretty sure he can hear it.I stay quiet, tongue tied. I don’t know what to say. I want the ground to open and swallow me, save me from this humiliation. Sinking my teeth into my lower lip, I draw the coat tighter around myself, dipping my head.“The Luna?” I hear
Valerie“I need to get into Ashville,” I tell Mireya at dinner the next evening. Lucien seats on her lap as she downs a glass of orange juice silently. “They have silverthorn in abundance.”“Request for it.”“Kai would never give it to me.”Placing her cup down, she looks at me, puzzled. “Why? You haven’t even tried.”I don’t need to try to know that he wouldn’t. I look like a completely different person now. He would never recognise me. If he does, that would be a lot worse, because he warned me never to return to his pack. I can’t imagine how mad he’ll be if I just show up without warning, or even try to reach out to him.“Did something happen between you two?”I blow out an exasperated breath, popping a grape into my mouth. “I wish I knew what happened. He seemed really mad the last time we saw. I have no idea why.”“Don’t make conclusions based on your assumptions, Valerie. Put in a request for the silverthorn herb and wait for a reply.”“The silverthorn herb?” Helen's voice inter
ValerieWhen we get to the mansion, a procession stands outside to welcome us. Everyone is present. Celeste stands with the maids behind her. Helen is beside her, dressed regally with a wide smile on her face. She steps forward before anyone else and dips her head. “Doctor Manchester, welcome to Bloodcrest Alpha’s mansion.”Everyone in my past is right in my face again. It’s quite fascinating, I must say. I never thought Helen could look at me with so much fondness. She always despised my very existence and never failed to hide it. Now, it’s the opposite. “Helen Vairmont, former Luna of Bloodcrest," I acknowledge. Her eyes light up pleasantly. “You know me?”“I did my homework.” I force a smile and shoot her a wink. Celeste has a scowl on her face, one I ignore, because I'm in no mood to deal with her at the moment. “Your husband was very loved by the people.” My heart constricts at the mention of Caspian. He was such a good father figure to me. It’s too bad that he had to die like t
Celeste.Arrrgh! The new doctor is infuriating. The way she speaks, the way she acts, like she’s a god or something. It’s been a long time since someone spoke to me in that manner. I thought being a Luna would put me above everyone else, but I was wrong. If it wasn’t for Sebastian, I would have put her in her place. The pack needs her. For years, Sebastian has been the most respected on the Alphas council, a fate even more grounded now that he has the doctor everyone wants in Bloodcrest. If she leaves because of my temper, he’ll never forgive me.“I don’t want to be on that team, father,” I grumble for the upteenth time, hoping my dad would listen to me. I’m in the beta’s mansion, on my knees, pleading to him. But for the first time in history, my dad doesn’t care about what I want.He leans back into his sofa, a drink in hand. “Don’t make me angry, Celeste. You must be on that team.”“But the doctor is a bitch,” I cry out. “She’s rude and bossy, and Sebastian can’t even defend me f
Valerie“Blood crest has improved a lot since the last time I was here,” Mireya muses as the drive takes us through the city. I whip my head around to face her in shock.“You’ve been here before?”“I’m a rouge, Valerie.” she shrugs. “I’ve been everywhere. I only settled in Asheville because it felt more like home to me.”Ashville. Kai’s home. I never saw him again after he dropped me off in the hos[ital premises five years ago. Even when Lady Juliet and the triplets wished Mireya and I their goodbyes at the airport, he didn’t show up. I wonder how he’s doing, if his pack is also affected by the Moonblight syndrome.Mireya nudges me, bringing me back to the present. “If you don’t want us to stay here, I can make arrangements to leave. Alphas from the neighbouring packs are all clamoring to have you with them.”I roll my eyes and massage my temples. “They all want to use me to gain power. It’s no knowledge that the alpha who has me in his pack will be most respected by the council.”“W
ValerieCeleste Blackthorne.Or is it Celeste Vairmont now? She’s married to Sebastian after all. She’s doing a lot better than I wish she was. Clad in an elegant tweed dress with designer accessories from head to toe, she looks beautiful. Fair skin, lush hair, sweet smile. My gut twists in fury. Life shouldn’t be so good to her.“Welcome, Miss Valerie Manchester,” she greets eloquently, handing her bag to one of the bodyguards behind her. “You’re welcome to Bloodcrest. We have been anticipating you.”There and then, I realise something. I am way higher in status than she is. I have a higher networth, command more respect, and have Alphas vying to set up meetings with me. She, on the other hand is just the Luna of Bloodcrest. Since she isn’t my luna, I have no obligation to show her courtesy.“I’m Celeste Vairmont,” she introduces eagerly, resting her hand on her chest. “The Luna of bloodcrest pack. I’ll be your host for the duration of your stay here, so feel free to tell me anythin
