I found her on the stairs. Val was coming down from the rooftop access looking like someone who'd been somewhere they weren't supposed to be and hadn't quite talked themselves into a reason yet. Hair loose, jacket pulled close, eyes a little too bright for midnight. I grabbed her arm and pulled her sideways into the alcove before she could say a word.

"My room," I said. "Now."

"Lyra—"

"Now, Val."

She came. I shut the door behind us and turned to face her. She was already moving to sit on the ed

The name missing from roll call was Petra Wynn.Alpha support trainee. Umbra house. Second year. I didn't know her well, quiet girl, kept to herself most of the time, the kind of student who survived by not drawing attention. The kind the academy was supposedly designed to nurture and protect. And now, no one knows what happened to her.Soren read the official announcement with the same tone he used for everything. Measured and final with no room for argument."Petra Wynn has submitted a voluntary withdrawal effective yesterday evening. Umbra house will deal with her clearance and everything that has to do with her complete departure from this premises."Nobody spoke. That was the thing. In the first week, an announcement like this would have sparked questions, debate, someone testing the edges of Soren's patience. Now the whole assembly stood in silence and absorbed it like a bruise they'd already stopped being surprised by.Voluntary withdrawal. Second one in two weeks.I stood in

I found her on the stairs. Val was coming down from the rooftop access looking like someone who'd been somewhere they weren't supposed to be and hadn't quite talked themselves into a reason yet. Hair loose, jacket pulled close, eyes a little too bright for midnight. I grabbed her arm and pulled her sideways into the alcove before she could say a word."My room," I said. "Now.""Lyra—""Now, Val."She came. I shut the door behind us and turned to face her. She was already moving to sit on the edge of my bed with that specific stillness she used when she was trying to look like nothing had happened. She was terrible at it."Where were you?" I asked."Rooftop.""Alone?"A pause. Half a second too long. "No," she said."Cassian." Not a question. She answered it anyway. "Yes."I sat down in my desk chair and looked at her. Really looked. The brightness in her eyes. The way her hands were folded in her lap too carefully. The fact that she hadn't launched immediately into an explanation, whi

I couldn't sleep. That wasn't new. Sleep had been a negotiation since I arrived at Dominion — my body too alert, my wolf too restless, my brain running laps around every close call and every near-miss until my mind shut down from the stress of thinking. But tonight was worse. The bell. The missing student. Severus's face when Cassian put him in the dirt, that specific look of someone who'd wanted to lose, who'd needed a reason to say something he couldn't say standing up.I pulled on a jacket, grabbed my wolfsbane, took my dose to avoid detection or any other close calls, and slipped out.Cassian wasn't around, which meant I was free to do what I wanted without his interference. The rooftop access was technically off-limits after curfew. The lock on the door had been broken since the second week and nobody had fixed it, which either meant maintenance was slow or someone with authority wanted students to have somewhere to go when the walls got too close.I pushed the door open and ste

The Solas common room was loud in an off-putting way.Not the usual noise, not arguments about rankings or training schedules or who'd taken whose spot at the strategy table. This was tighter than that. Voices cutting over each other, nobody actually listening, everyone needing to say something because silence felt too much like admitting they were scared. In the past few days, another student had been confirmed missing."Three students now," someone said. "Three.""Two. Fell, and now whoever the bell was for.""I heard it was an Umbra girl. Second year.""They always say people quit. Nobody just quits."I stood at the edge of the room with my arms crossed and let the noise wash over me. Ronan was beside me, eating an apple he'd brought from dinner, watching the room with the kind of calm that came from deciding early not to panic about things you couldn't control.Val was in the corner. She hadn't touched the plate Lyra had put in front of her. She was sitting with her back against

The dining hall felt wrong.I noticed it the moment I walked in, the noise level was lower than usual, the kind of lower that meant people were talking but didn't want to be overheard. Groups leaned in close over their trays. Eyes moved toward the doors and back, as if they were expecting something.I grabbed a plate and found Lyra already at our end of the table."What's happening?" I asked, sitting down."Marcus Fell," she said quietly. "Ferox trainee. He didn't come back from night drills two days ago.""What do they say happened?""Officially?" She picked up her fork. "He quit. Withdrew voluntarily. Papers signed, room cleared." She looked at me. "But his roommate says his bed was still warm when he woke up. And his boots were still by the door."That was surprising. I looked around the hall. The Ferox table was quieter than any table in that house had any right to be. Especially them. They're usually the loud ones. All brawn and no brains."People quit," I said, because I neede

The arena was loud the way only the Lunar Combat Arena got loud, the kind of noise that pressed against your chest and lived there, crowd packed into every row, moonlight cutting hard across the sand floor below.I rolled my shoulders and looked across the arena. Two rings. Mine on the left, Val's on the right. Twenty feet of sand between them that might as well have been a wall.Val was already in position, arms loose at her sides, watching Bram Cole rotate his neck across from her. Cole was Ferox through and through, wide, heavy, the kind of fighter who won most of his matches before they started just by showing up and letting people look at him.He was looking at Val the same way he'd looked at her across the yard three days ago. Like the answer was already written.I caught her eye across the sand.I gave her a single nod. Short. Direct. She stiffened. Looked away. I saw her jaw tighten.Good. Anger was better than nerves. I'd take it.Severus stepped into my ring.He was already

Soren's office smelled like old paper and authority. The heavy oak desk dominated the center, cluttered with stacks of papers and ink bottles. He didn't look up when I walked in. Just kept writing, his pen moving slow and deliberate across the page, scratching out each letter with precision, like

She was still on her knees when I rose to my full height. I didn't reach down. Didn't offer a hand. I just stood there and let the silence do the work, because silence was a weapon I knew how to use better than most. The forest was still around us. Wind through leaves. Somewhere far off, the faint

I woke with a start, my heart pounding from a nightmare of Cain finding out the truth and dragging me out of Dominion Academy. It took me a moment to put myself in order before I took in my surrounding. The dorm was dim, morning light creeping through the curtains, but Cassian was already up, rumma

Val’s panicked voice rang in my ears as I hurried through the academy halls, her voice shaking over the phone after telling her what Cain had in mind.I reached Val’s dorm, knocking softly. "It’s me," I whispered. She yanked me inside, her blue eyes wide, her small frame tense. "We need to move you
