Don, I'm Not Your Bet
Don, I'm Not Your Bet
Penulis: Goya

Chapter 1

Penulis: Goya
After a brief, dead silence, the living room erupted.

"Betting on a wedding? And losing?"

"The Bianchi and Gallo engagement? That's not something you joke about!"

"Do you have any idea how exhausting it was for Seraphina to handwrite five hundred invitations? All of New York knows they're getting married. Now it's off, and how are we supposed to clean this up?"

A few of them crowded in, talking over each other.

The more they talked, the more heated they got, until finally they all turned to Julia:

"You're Seraphina's own sister. Say something. It was just a joke, not a real bet."

Julia sat in the corner, a wine glass in her hand.

Avoiding everyone's eyes, she swirled the red wine slowly.

"I wasn't joking. You all know I never joke about bets."

The air in the living room froze solid.

Everyone realized, this wedding was truly dead.

And for one simple reason.

Every friend at this pre-wedding blowout had met through betting on horses.

Our family had been in the "gambling" business for generations.

Horse race betting.

Every month, we traveled across the country to bet on races.

A bet made is a bet honored. That was our iron rule.

No one said another word.

I lowered my eyes and poured myself a drink.

"Lorenzo, what do you say?"

Lorenzo looked at me, a trace of alcohol softening his gaze.

He reached out and pinched my cheek, the way he always did.

"Seraphina, the wedding can still happen in three years. We've got plenty of time."

"We all came together because of horse racing. If we ruin everyone's luck over a wedding date, it's just not worth it."

"You understand, don't you?"

The answer I expected.

I could lower my head and swallow the bitterness.

When I looked up again, the smile was back in place.

"I don't understand. But I agree."

Lorenzo let out a breath, laughing softly as he looked at me.

"You seem to be in a good mood."

The mood plummeted. For a moment, no one spoke.

Then the living room door was pushed open.

A waiter stood at the entrance, wheeling in a three-tier cake.

Candles on top, spelling out "Happy 27th Birthday, Seraphina."

"Happy birthday!"

Lorenzo startled first, then, as if waking from a dream, began clapping first.

The pre-wedding blowout had absurdly turned into my birthday party.

A few rounds of drinks later, the private room was filled with the clatter of dice cups and singing.

I stood up and walked over to Lorenzo.

I reached into his suit pocket and pulled out a handful of candy.

"Why?"

Lorenzo smiled.

"Knew I couldn't hide it from you."

He stretched out an arm and pulled me into his chest, his voice a little slurred with drink:

"Julia would've had to drink all the wine if she lost. Her liver's bad. If it were you, you'd have done the same."

I turned my head and stared at him.

I wanted so badly to ask if he'd known all along what the bet was.

If that's why he came prepared.

But the words reached my lips and felt meaningless.

I threw my head back and took a long gulp of wine.

Suddenly, everything before me felt so damn ridiculous. And so laughable.

Lorenzo's POVWhen he woke again, he was in a hospital room.Julia, Kevin, and the others were all gathered around the bed.Every one of them had red-rimmed eyes."Lorenzo...""Our money. All of it. Gone."Julia sobbed, choking out the words between breaths. After Lorenzo left that day, no one dared make the call. In the end, Julia made the decision. She bet on the two favorites everyone agreed on.One got over eight million. The other, over seven. Nearly sixteen million combined. The race ended, and every cent was lost. One ran out of steam the whole way. The other barely scraped into third. Nowhere near the payout. And the dark horse Lorenzo had pointed to, the one nobody believed in, was bought by a random bettor from Chicago for thirty thousand. It crossed the finish line first, odds skyrocketing to astronomical heights. The payout was close to a hundred million.Julia covered her face."I'm sorry. I made the call on those two. We should have listened to you."Lorenzo stared at the

Lorenzo's POVInside the grand banquet hall of the upscale wedding hotel. The wedding march swelled, solemn and majestic. At the end of the white carpet, Ricardo stood in his suit, straight as a pine.Seraphina, in white lace, walked slowly toward him like a goddess descending. The priest read the vows with feeling:"Seraphina, do you take Ricardo to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do you part?"Seraphina had just opened her mouth—"BANG!"The heavy doors of the banquet hall were slammed open from the outside."I object!"Lorenzo stood in the doorway, gasping for breath. His eyes were blood red, fixed on the two figures on the red carpet. He screamed it out, his voice echoing through the vast hall. The whole room erupted.Guests turned, whispering.Lorenzo ignored every stare and strode down the carpet, straight to Ricardo. He loc

Lorenzo's POVSaratoga. The international racetrack. This was the biggest horse racing event the Americas had seen in a decade. For gamblers, it was just as rare.By the time Lorenzo and his group arrived, the venue was already packed. The favorites tipped by the experts had odds soaring to astronomical heights.Every bet could mean overnight fortune. Or total ruin.Dante stood in front of the racing board, studying it for ages. "This one's got promise. Stable form, beautiful track record. Over fifty percent chance of winning."Julia crouched beside him, finger tapping the horse's profile. "Bet amount?""Six million."But Lorenzo was staring down at his phone.Selena, a friend he'd met through horse racing, had also been invited by Seraphina to today's wedding. But if he wasn't there, how could the wedding go on?"Lorenzo, come look at this." Kevin waved from a distance."This one's stronger than Dante's pick, I swear. Explosive speed. Look at its past sprint records—""You guys decide

The night before the wedding, I went back to the Gallo family, back to my parents. It was the eve of my marriage, and instead of the panic I'd expected, there was a strange calm.My mother looked at me, eyes slightly red, but smiling more freely than I'd ever seen."Actually, the first time I met Ricardo, I thought he should be my daughter's husband."I blinked, caught off guard."I may be the Donna of the Gallo family, but I'm your mother first. I want you to be happy. Ricardo is attentive. He cares more about you. A mother can see these things."Her voice was soft, her eyes full of warmth."I mentioned once, offhand, that your stomach isn't good. After that, every time he came for dinner, he'd go out of his way to tell the kitchen to go easy on the spice, and that you can't drink cold water.""Lorenzo knew too. But Lorenzo was never that careful.""You saw it all along?" I asked quietly. She tapped my forehead with a smile. "Silly girl. Only you, in the middle of it, couldn't see."M

Lorenzo's POVBack in the room, Lorenzo splashed cold water on his face.He sat on the edge of the bed, restless. He picked up his phone again and dialed the number he knew by heart.Still a busy tone.Every way of reaching her, all blocked. He stared at the red exclamation mark on the screen, and somehow felt even more certain. He thought back to when he and Seraphina were twenty-two. She'd ignored him for three days because he forgot their anniversary. Wouldn't pick up his calls either.Later, he bought her favorite cake from that bakery and waited downstairs at her apartment. She poked her head out the window, eyes red-rimmed.Her mouth said "no," but she still ran down to take it.So what she was doing now was just waiting for him to come back and coax her.He took a deep breath and dialed Ricardo's number. The call connected quickly.Lorenzo opened his mouth, suddenly not knowing what to ask.A few seconds of silence, then he spoke: "Tomorrow, you and Seraphina...""For the sake o

Where are you going?!""To the airport!"Lorenzo's eyes were bloodshot. He shoved her hand away."Let go!""Are you insane?!"Julia clung to him desperately."Tomorrow is the race! Everyone's bet their entire fortune! You leave now, what are we supposed to do?!"Behind her came Dante's voice, along with a few other friends."Lorenzo, calm down first.""I don't care!"Lorenzo whipped his head around, eyes threaded with red, voice hoarse."She's getting married!""And the guy is Ricardo! He's our friend, how could he be so shameless!"He was shaking
