Chapter 3

Penulis: Goya
Through my hangover, I was jolted awake by one phone call after another.

"Seraphina, what's the final word from the upscale wedding venue?"

"Seraphina, Father is furious. He says this reckless decision has cost the Gallo family a fortune."

"Seraphina, get home right now and explain yourself!"

My head was splitting.

I lay in bed for a long moment before it sank in that last night wasn't a dream.

The wedding I'd waited seven years for was really gone, all because of a candy-guessing game.

I rubbed my temples and opened my phone.

99+ unread messages.

I tapped on Julia's voice message.

"Seraphina... what I said last night, I'm not taking it back. Be ready."

And Lorenzo's chat? Spotless. Empty.

Someone had posted a group photo on Instagram last night, captioned "Happy birthday, never apart."

The filter was warm-toned. Everyone was smiling.

I stood in front of the cake, candlelight flickering on my face, looking like I was genuinely happy.

Someone commented below, "So when's the wedding?"

The poster replied, "Haha, hit a little snag."

I took a deep breath and dialed Lorenzo's number.

"Seraphina?"

In the background, Julia's voice drifted through:

"Lorenzo, my head hurts so bad..."

Without waiting for me to speak, Lorenzo said urgently:

"Handle your parents, and take care of the hotel cancellation too. I'll cover the penalty fee."

"I can't get away right now. Julia's thrown up a few times and her stomach's still off. I need to take her to the hospital."

Not a single apology.

He took it for granted that I would, just like every time in the past seven years.

Support and accommodate his every decision unconditionally.

How laughable. The truth was, our time... had less than three days left.

"Okay."

I answered softly and hung up.

I pulled out an empty cardboard box and started packing away everything related to Lorenzo.

The love journal he'd stayed up hand-writing for me the year we met at twenty.

Dried rose petals he'd given me a year later were still tucked inside.

One light touch, and they crumbled into red powder.

The first pair of couple mugs we'd made ourselves.

His crooked "S&L" was carved into the bottom.

Now it had faded too.

And an amethyst worth a small fortune.

Four years ago, when this group of boys first left home and stepped into the horse betting world, they placed their first bet.

He'd overruled everyone, insisting on the dark horse nobody believed in, the one with the bleak record.

I emptied every last bit of my savings and gave it to him.

The moment the race ended and the results came in, he'd scooped me up in his arms and kissed me, ecstatic.

"Seraphina, I'm using the winnings to buy you the most special amethyst."

"People bet on odds, on wins and losses, but I bet on forever. You're my priceless treasure."

Seven years. Over two thousand five hundred days and nights.

I thought we'd already won.

Never imagined he'd gamble away our future.

I tossed each item into the cardboard box, one by one.

Then dragged it downstairs.

The housekeeper gasped when she saw it:

"Miss, are you sure you're throwing the right things out? These are all treasures!"

I smiled calmly.

"Nothing's wrong."

"I don't want any of it anymore. If you want it, it's yours."

She thanked me profusely and took the box.

I slid the engagement ring off my finger and dropped it in.

"Oh, and this too. It's yours."

She stood frozen, disbelief all over her face.

I hailed a cab and went to the hotel.

The manager looked up as I walked in alone.

"Miss Seraphina, are you here by yourself?"

I answered:

"Oh... my fiancé is busy notifying everyone about the reschedule."

The manager's face lit up with understanding, nodding eagerly:

"So it's a reschedule! I thought it was canceled. When's the new date? I'll take care of it right away."

"The day after tomorrow. Thank you."

Walking out of the hotel, the sunlight stung my eyes.

I lifted my head and looked at the vast blue sky.

Something that had been hanging inside me finally settled, completely.

This seven-year dream.

I was finally awake.

The race ended, and every cent was lost. One ran out of steam the whole way. The other barely scraped into third. Nowhere near the payout. And the dark horse Lorenzo had pointed to, the one nobody believed in, was bought by a random bettor from Chicago for thirty thousand. It crossed the finish line first, odds skyrocketing to astronomical heights. The payout was close to a hundred million.Julia covered her face."I'm sorry. I made the call on those two. We should have listened to you."Lorenzo stared at the

Lorenzo's POVInside the grand banquet hall of the upscale wedding hotel. The wedding march swelled, solemn and majestic. At the end of the white carpet, Ricardo stood in his suit, straight as a pine.Seraphina, in white lace, walked slowly toward him like a goddess descending. The priest read the vows with feeling:"Seraphina, do you take Ricardo to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do you part?"Seraphina had just opened her mouth—"BANG!"The heavy doors of the banquet hall were slammed open from the outside."I object!"Lorenzo stood in the doorway, gasping for breath. His eyes were blood red, fixed on the two figures on the red carpet. He screamed it out, his voice echoing through the vast hall. The whole room erupted.Guests turned, whispering.Lorenzo ignored every stare and strode down the carpet, straight to Ricardo. He loc

Lorenzo's POVSaratoga. The international racetrack. This was the biggest horse racing event the Americas had seen in a decade. Or total ruin.Dante stood in front of the racing board, studying it for ages. "This one's got promise. Stable form, beautiful track record. Over fifty percent chance of winning."Julia crouched beside him, finger tapping the horse's profile. The night before the wedding, I went back to the Gallo family, back to my parents. It was the eve of my marriage, and instead of the panic I'd expected, there was a strange calm.My mother looked at me, eyes slightly red, but smiling more freely than I'd ever seen."Actually, the first time I met Ricardo, I thought he should be my daughter's husband."I blinked, caught off guard."I may be the Donna of the Gallo family, but I'm your mother first. I want you to be happy. Ricardo is attentive. He cares more about you. A mother can see these things."Her voice was soft, her eyes full of warmth."I mentioned once, offhand, that your stomach isn't good. After that, every time he came for dinner, he'd go out of his way to tell the kitchen to go easy on the spice, and that you can't drink cold water.""Lorenzo knew too. But Lorenzo was never that careful.""You saw it all along?" I asked quietly. She tapped my forehead with a smile. "Silly girl. Only you, in the middle of it, couldn't see."M

Lorenzo's POVBack in the room, Lorenzo splashed cold water on his face.He sat on the edge of the bed, restless. He picked up his phone again and dialed the number he knew by heart.Still a busy tone.Every way of reaching her, all blocked. He stared at the red exclamation mark on the screen, and somehow felt even more certain. He thought back to when he and Seraphina were twenty-two. She'd ignored him for three days because he forgot their anniversary. Wouldn't pick up his calls either.Later, he bought her favorite cake from that bakery and waited downstairs at her apartment. She poked her head out the window, eyes red-rimmed.Her mouth said "no," but she still ran down to take it.So what she was doing now was just waiting for him to come back and coax her.He took a deep breath and dialed Ricardo's number. The call connected quickly.Lorenzo opened his mouth, suddenly not knowing what to ask.A few seconds of silence, then he spoke: "Tomorrow, you and Seraphina...""For the sake o

Where are you going?!""To the airport!"Lorenzo's eyes were bloodshot. He shoved her hand away."Let go!""Are you insane?!"Julia clung to him desperately."Tomorrow is the race! Everyone's bet their entire fortune! You leave now, what are we supposed to do?!"Behind her came Dante's voice, along with a few other friends."Lorenzo, calm down first.""I don't care!"Lorenzo whipped his head around, eyes threaded with red, voice hoarse."She's getting married!""And the guy is Ricardo!
