Chapter 4

Penulis: Goya
That night, Lorenzo was sitting on the couch waiting for me when I got home.

I froze for a second.

"Why are you here?"

His brows were locked tight, barely contained anger in every word.

"The hotel told me you didn't cancel the wedding. You just postponed it to the day after tomorrow?"

So that's what this was about.

I looked down and changed my shoes.

"Yeah. But I already transferred the hotel deposit to your account."

He wore an expression of strained patience.

Finally, he couldn't hold it in anymore and said something harsh.

"You can't wait three more years?"

"Seraphina, is marrying me the only thing in your life?"

He stood up and walked over to me.

"We've been betting on horses so long. Dante and the others really believe in luck."

"Right now the family hasn't hit any trouble, but if we do, they'll definitely hold it against us for going back on the wedding."

"I've protected you too well all this time. Do you think this is how the Bianchi family got where it is? Sweetheart, can't you be a little more understanding?"

Then he strode toward the door.

"I won't answer any more calls from the hotel. Cancel the wedding yourself. Otherwise, when there's no groom, you'll be the one humiliated."

"Tomorrow I'm going to Saratoga with Julia and the others for the races. I'll be gone about a week. Take some time to cool off."

The door slammed shut.

I stood there, listening to his footsteps fade down the hallway.

I walked to the keypad lock.

Changed the code from the date we got together to my own birthday.

The next morning, Lorenzo called.

"Seraphina, I'm at the airport. Still an hour before security. Do you want to come... see me off?"

Every time he traveled before, I'd picked him up and dropped him off, rain or shine.

"No. I've got things to do today."

There was a pause on the other end, then his voice softened further:

"I was a little emotional yesterday. Don't take what I said to heart. I promise, by the time you're thirty, I'll be Don, and you'll be the Donna of the Bianchi family."

"And if that day, Julia wants to bet with you again?"

The line went noticeably still.

Then his voice tinged with displeasure:

"Seraphina, you're still hung up on this."

"I'm not hung up. I'm just saying, if a bet means more to you than a promise, then don't make promises so easily."

Another long silence.

I called his name softly:

"Lorenzo."

"Hmm?"

Then the roar of plane engines came through the line.

I smiled and said quietly:

"Thank you. For these seven years."

Through the roar, he asked, dazed:

"What did you say?"

"Nothing." I spoke into the phone. "Have a safe trip."

"Okay." He paused, as if sensing something, his tone carrying a hint of reassurance.

"Seraphina, don't worry. I won't—"

Before he could finish, Julia's soft, sweet voice came through:

"Lorenzo, come get the tickets!"

I pressed the hang-up button.

Then I opened my phone, went into Lorenzo's family group chat, and tapped "Delete and Leave."

Tomorrow was the last of the three days. The day I'd leave Lorenzo for good.

Then I got a call.

"I'm downstairs." The voice on the other end was low and gentle.

"Tomorrow's the wedding. I'm here to take you to your dress fitting."

"Okay."

I grabbed my bag and walked out briskly.

That night, at an upscale hotel in Saratoga.

Dante sprawled on the lobby couch, scrolling his phone, then suddenly shot upright.

"Oh my God!"

He shoved his phone toward Lorenzo.

"Lorenzo! Seraphina posted on Instagram! She's getting married tomorrow!"

Lorenzo rubbed his brow wearily.

"Tell her to stop."

"How's she going to get married if I'm not there?"

Dante stammered, cold sweat breaking out.

"B-but the guy she's marrying is..."

"You know what, just look yourself."

He didn't dare say it, so he shoved the phone straight into Lorenzo's hand.

Lorenzo's gaze drifted over lazily, then stopped dead.

His pupils contracted sharply.

Lorenzo's POVWhen he woke again, he was in a hospital room.Julia, Kevin, and the others were all gathered around the bed.Every one of them had red-rimmed eyes."Lorenzo...""Our money. All of it. Gone."Julia sobbed, choking out the words between breaths. After Lorenzo left that day, no one dared make the call. In the end, Julia made the decision. She bet on the two favorites everyone agreed on.One got over eight million. The other, over seven. Nearly sixteen million combined. The race ended, and every cent was lost. One ran out of steam the whole way. The other barely scraped into third. Nowhere near the payout. And the dark horse Lorenzo had pointed to, the one nobody believed in, was bought by a random bettor from Chicago for thirty thousand. It crossed the finish line first, odds skyrocketing to astronomical heights. The payout was close to a hundred million.Julia covered her face."I'm sorry. I made the call on those two. We should have listened to you."Lorenzo stared at the

Lorenzo's POVInside the grand banquet hall of the upscale wedding hotel. The wedding march swelled, solemn and majestic. At the end of the white carpet, Ricardo stood in his suit, straight as a pine.Seraphina, in white lace, walked slowly toward him like a goddess descending. The priest read the vows with feeling:"Seraphina, do you take Ricardo to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do you part?"Seraphina had just opened her mouth—"BANG!"The heavy doors of the banquet hall were slammed open from the outside."I object!"Lorenzo stood in the doorway, gasping for breath. His eyes were blood red, fixed on the two figures on the red carpet. He screamed it out, his voice echoing through the vast hall. The whole room erupted.Guests turned, whispering.Lorenzo ignored every stare and strode down the carpet, straight to Ricardo. He loc

Lorenzo's POVSaratoga. The international racetrack. This was the biggest horse racing event the Americas had seen in a decade. For gamblers, it was just as rare.By the time Lorenzo and his group arrived, the venue was already packed. The favorites tipped by the experts had odds soaring to astronomical heights.Every bet could mean overnight fortune. Or total ruin.Dante stood in front of the racing board, studying it for ages. "This one's got promise. Stable form, beautiful track record. Over fifty percent chance of winning."Julia crouched beside him, finger tapping the horse's profile. "Bet amount?""Six million."But Lorenzo was staring down at his phone.Selena, a friend he'd met through horse racing, had also been invited by Seraphina to today's wedding. But if he wasn't there, how could the wedding go on?"Lorenzo, come look at this." The night before the wedding, I went back to the Gallo family, back to my parents. It was the eve of my marriage, and instead of the panic I'd expected, there was a strange calm.My mother looked at me, eyes slightly red, but smiling more freely than I'd ever seen."Actually, the first time I met Ricardo, I thought he should be my daughter's husband."I blinked, caught off guard."I may be the Donna of the Gallo family, but I'm your mother first. I want you to be happy. Ricardo is attentive. He cares more about you. A mother can see these things."Her voice was soft, her eyes full of warmth."I mentioned once, offhand, that your stomach isn't good. After that, every time he came for dinner, he'd go out of his way to tell the kitchen to go easy on the spice, and that you can't drink cold water.""Lorenzo knew too. But Lorenzo was never that careful.""You saw it all along?" I asked quietly. She tapped my forehead with a smile. "Silly girl. Only you, in the middle of it, couldn't see."M

Lorenzo's POVBack in the room, Lorenzo splashed cold water on his face.He sat on the edge of the bed, restless. He picked up his phone again and dialed the number he knew by heart.Still a busy tone.Every way of reaching her, all blocked. He stared at the red exclamation mark on the screen, and somehow felt even more certain. He thought back to when he and Seraphina were twenty-two. She'd ignored him for three days because he forgot their anniversary. Wouldn't pick up his calls either.Later, he bought her favorite cake from that bakery and waited downstairs at her apartment. She poked her head out the window, eyes red-rimmed.Her mouth said "no," but she still ran down to take it.So what she was doing now was just waiting for him to come back and coax her.He took a deep breath and dialed Ricardo's number. The call connected quickly.Lorenzo opened his mouth, suddenly not knowing what to ask.A few seconds of silence, then he spoke: "Tomorrow, you and Seraphina...""For the sake o

Where are you going?!""To the airport!"Lorenzo's eyes were bloodshot. He shoved her hand away."Let go!""Are you insane?!"Julia clung to him desperately."Tomorrow is the race! Everyone's bet their entire fortune! You leave now, what are we supposed to do?!"Behind her came Dante's voice, along with a few other friends."Lorenzo, calm down first.""I don't care!"Lorenzo whipped his head around, eyes threaded with red, voice hoarse."She's getting married!""And the guy is Ricardo!
