Chapter 9

작가: Petey Parkin
I pressed my face into the pillow, trying not to make a sound as cold sweat covered my forehead.

The door opened quietly. Mom entered with a warm washcloth.

She sat on the edge of the bed and laid it across my forehead.

“Does it hurt badly?”

I kept my eyes closed. I did not want her to see how weak I felt.

“It’s not too bad.”

Her hands trembled slightly as she clumsily massaged my temples.

“I never took proper care of you before, so I’m probably not very good at this. Bear with me.”

  • Don’t Cry at My Funeral   Chapter 10

When I regained consciousness, a team of doctors surrounded my bed.Fred listened gravely as the lead physician explained my condition. His brow was deeply furrowed. The attending doctor shook his head. The medical team quietly filed out.Mom was sitting beside me and gripping my hand as tears streamed silently down her face.I stared at the ceiling. I felt strangely weightless and disconnected from my own body.“How long was I unconscious?”Derek stepped forward and answered me with a hoarse voice, “Two days.”I tried to sit up, but there was no strength left in my body.Audrey quickly placed a hand on my shoulder.“Don’t move. Just lie still.”Their faces were filled with concern, but I felt perfectly calm.“Let’s go home.”After we returned to the mansion, I spent most of my time asleep.Whenever I was awake, I watched the leaves outside my window turn yellow and drift from the trees.Fred sat beside my bed, peeling an apple with a paring knife.“Is there anything els

Bear with me.”The warmth against my forehead eased some of the tension in my body.“You don’t need to stay. Go back to bed.”Mom continued massaging my temples. Her voice was strained with unshed tears as she said, “I can’t sleep. Please, just let me stay with you.”I did not refuse her again. As her fingers continued their gentle circles, I gradually drifted off.A few days later, we arrived on the southern coast. That evening, a cool, salty breeze swept away the lingering heat of the day.Audrey and Dere

“All my life, I stayed with my grandmother. In the original timeline, when I lived with my dad, I never even left the state.”Fred nodded and pulled out his phone.“All right. Where would you like to go?”I thought for a moment.“I’d like to see snow-covered mountains, the ocean, and a big street festival.”The next day, the mansion was filled with preparations for the trip.Mom stood in my room with several large suitcases, packing my clothes. She folded a heavy winter coat and tucked it into one corner of a suitcase.“The mountains will be freezing. You need to bring this one. It’s windproof.”I sat on the edge of the bed and watched her work.“You don’t need to pack so much. A couple of changes of clothes will be enough.”Mom paused. Her back remained facing me.“No. If you get too cold, your headaches might get worse.”She turned around and slipped a pill organizer into my carry-on bag.“I’ve sorted your medication by day and time. I’ll remind you when to take everyth

Fred’s expression remained cold and impassive.“I don’t care what you claim to remember. We haven’t settled the matter of you harassing Phoebe outside this estate.”Dad swallowed hard but tried to maintain his composure. “She’s my daughter. I have every right to see her! She’s dying anyway, isn’t she?“Keeping her here will only make her a burden. Give me some money, and I’ll take her off your hands.”Fred rose and looked down at him.“I warned you what would happen if you ever showed your face here again.”He turned to the security guards standing nearby.“Break one of his legs and kick him out of the city. Make sure he never sets foot here again.”Two guards stepped forward and seized Dad by the arms.“Mr. Brown, you can’t do this! I’m sorry!“Forget the money! I don’t want it anymore!”His pleas gradually faded as the guards dragged him outside.I stood on the upstairs landing and watched the entire exchange below.Audrey came over and gently took my arm.“Don’t watc

Audrey walked over. She folded two dish towels around the handles of the hot pot and lifted it from the counter.“Why didn’t you use mitts?”Mom froze. She looked flustered.“I... I was in such a hurry that I forgot.”Audrey reached for a serving tray.“Get a bowl. She must be hungry.”Mom’s eyes grew misty. She quickly turned toward the cabinet. They entered my room one after the other.Audrey set the serving tray on the bedside table.“Have some while it’s hot. She spent all afternoon making it, and it turned out really well.”Then, Mom handed me the bowl without quite meeting my eyes.“Careful. It’s hot.”I took it. I could feel the warmth of the bowl against my hands.“Thank you.”Audrey pulled up a chair and sat down.“Next time, don’t carry anything that hot yourself. We have servants for that.”Mom wiped her hands awkwardly.“I thought it would be better if I made it myself.”Audrey said nothing more. She simply slid the box of tissues closer to Mom.The mood

  • Don’t Cry at My Funeral   Chapter 5

When I opened my eyes again, my vision was filled with a blinding, cold white.Fred sat on the sofa beside the hospital bed. There was a stack of medical reports in his hands. He read each page carefully with his brow slightly furrowed. The door opened. The attending physician walked into the room.Fred closed the folder and handed it to his assistant, who stood behind him.“Use every pain-management option available. Cost is not an issue.”The doctor nodded.“Rest assured, Mr. Brown. We’ll do everything we can to ease her pain.”Fred turned and looked at me.“Since you’re awake, have some water.”He picked up the water pitcher from the bedside table, poured some into a cup, and held the straw to my lips.I closed my lips around it and took a small sip.The water offered some relief to my parched throat.“Thank you, Fred.”He set the cup back on the table and handed me a tissue.“The doctor says you need plenty of rest, so I’ve arranged a medical leave of absence from s
