Chapter 1

"If you're going to die, then hurry up and die! Stop putting on an act. I don't have time for your drama!"

With a sharp click, the call ended.

But Mom's shrill curses still echoed in my ears.

"What? You little witch! Did you give us a fake number? Was that really your mom telling you to go die?"

The abductor who'd made the call kicked me hard to vent his frustration.

"I thought we'd hit the jackpot, since the little witch said her mom's been making good money in business these years. What rotten luck!"

"What should we do now, boss?"

The man they addressed as "boss" had a sinister look on his face. He suddenly lifted my chin and smiled cryptically.

"I refused to believe that her mom wouldn't have any reaction at all. She's probably faking it. Record something interesting and send it to her mom.

"If she still doesn't react… Well, don't blame me for being ruthless."

"Anyway, this one's pretty enough. We might as well have some fun before we finish her off."

The men quickly reached an agreement.

Someone pinned me down and started tearing at my clothes.

Despair, misery, and helplessness—it all twisted together in my chest.

I had already died once. Was I really going to die again?

In my past life, Mom hadn't been this indifferent.

It was true. She had always favored Charlene Grady, her adopted daughter whose parents died in the line of duty. But when it came to life and death, she wouldn't abandon me—her own flesh and blood.

Fearing the cruelty of the abductors, Mom dropped Charlene off along the way and rushed to the address alone.

Before quitting her job to go into business, Mom had been an exceptionally skilled police officer. The abductors had underestimated her when they took me, so she was able to rescue me without trouble.

But no one could have predicted what happened next.

That same day, a news story went viral.

Criminals had targeted a young woman who was waiting by the roadside. Taking advantage of the sparse crowd, they dragged her away, assaulted her, and then tortured her to death.

The details were so brutal that even with the images being blurred out, they still sent chills down people's spines.

Mom recognized the young woman as the adopted daughter she had doted on for years. She broke down completely right there and then.

She grabbed me by the shoulders and shook me violently. Her grief was so overwhelming that she began pounding my chest and screaming, "Why did you wander off? Why did you have to get yourself abducted? If I hadn't gone to save you, Charlene would still be alive! Why couldn't it have—"

She never finished that sentence, but I knew that she wished it was me instead.

From that day on, Mom never smiled at me again.

After calming down, she told me that she knew it wasn't my fault and that she shouldn't blame me. Still, she never forgave me.

Charlene's funeral was a grand affair, meticulously arranged by Mom. She spent three sleepless days and nights pouring her heart into every detail. However, she didn't even allow me to attend.

"Matilda, don't taint her journey to heaven. I want her to finish her journey with purity and peace, alright?"

Later, on the anniversary of Charlene's death, Mom received an extortion text message.

"You seem like a good girl. So I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want your mom finding out that you hired us to abduct you, would you?"

Even though the text message didn't specify who it was for, Mom immediately assumed that it was about me. She grabbed me by the throat and yanked my hair. Then, she laughed maniacally, her eyes brimming with hatred.

"So it was all an act! I've told you before that I can never repay what I owe Charlene in this lifetime. It was only right for me to treat her well! How could you do something so vile just to steal my attention away from her?

"I've spent my whole life saving people. I never imagined that the thing I birthed would be such a shameless monster! You should just die and pay for Charlene's life!"

Charlene scrambled over on her hands and knees and threw herself in front of Mom, babbling incoherently. She tried to convince Mom that it was all fake."Mom, this must be Matilda's doing! She's trying to drive us apart!" Charlene frantically tried to explain. But this time, it was useless.Mom gritted her teeth and suddenly lunged at her. Then, she grabbed her by the throat and roared, "Anything could happen during an operation. No one could have predicted the sacrifices!"I spent 12 years doing my best to make it up to you, and this is how you repay us? Charlene, you're nothing but a heartless and ungrateful monster!"Despite being nearly strangled to death, Charlene somehow found the strength to break free and shove Mom away. She dropped the act and snapped, "So what if I'm heartless and ungrateful? Why did my parents have to die instead of you? It should have been you, not them! I'd give anything to trade your life for theirs. I wish I could slice you to pieces!"Mom lost all

Charlene threw herself into Mom's arms and started to sob uncontrollably. She knew exactly how to manipulate Mom.There was no way Mom could possibly remain unmoved when Charlene brought up her deceased parents at this moment. As for destroying evidence that hadn't even been fully examined yet? Charlene was well aware that with Mom's former prestige, she could just get them to turn a blind eye and let the matter slide.Charlene was smart. She knew that this was the only possible piece of evidence. She would only have to destroy it, and then she would have nothing to do with the case. That said, she was also quite stupid. Mom's overprotectiveness of her for the past 12 years had made her soft.Ms. Madden was already visibly displeased. She thought that Charlene was acting far too suspiciously."Didn't you know that once data is uploaded to the cloud, it doesn't matter if the phone turns to dust?" I asked slowly and deliberately.Charlene had been so busy taunting me that she hadn

I asked Ms. Madden to take me back to the place where they had found me. In other words, the crime scene. When Ms. Madden took me there, she deliberately insisted that Mom and Charlene come along.Mom, noticing Ms. Madden's suspicion toward Charlene, began to find her behavior baffling."Matilda, how many times have I told you not to waste police resources? If you're lying to Peggy, the consequences will be just as severe. I won't help you then!"However, she fell silent upon arriving at the crime scene. The blood stain on the ground—distinct from those of a gunshot wound—could only have been mine.I was dragged by my hair from one spot to another, leaving a winding trail of blood behind. The sight must have stirred something in her and reminded her of the poor Charlene from her past life. As a result, she managed to dredge up a sliver of pity for me, the so-called "innocent" one. She reached out to take my hand, but Charlene gripped hers tightly instead."Mom, I'm so scared. It

Naturally, Mom hadn't watched those videos."Anyone who'd seen these videos would never eagerly force their daughter to turn herself in for conviction or decisively condemn her to the death penalty. Judith, what were you even thinking?" Ms. Madden asked.Mom had been silent since watching the videos, but her hands trembled slightly. She shakily took out her phone. She unblocked me on WhatsApp, and the same dozen videos she had just seen appeared on the screen. Feeling defeated, she slowly sank onto the couch."How could this be?" she muttered to herself. "Why is it like this? B-But the last time I received this kind of message, she was the one who… Does that mean that Matilda didn't hire those men?"Mom had many doubts, yet she still condemned me to death over a single text. But why didn't she ever question her precious adopted daughter, Charlene?Charlene, who had died in our past lives, was the daughter of the fallen comrades who had sacrificed themselves to protect Mom.Mom w

Upon hearing that the murderer was to be taken away to turn herself in, the outraged patients and family members gathered at the door. Those who had been eager to charge in and force me out burst into cheers. They raised their hands high, shouting praises for Mom and Charlene, hailing their righteousness in cutting ties with a criminal."Get lost, you murderer!""Turn yourself in! Turn yourself in!""Someone who's killed that many people deserves the death penalty! Otherwise, she'll just be a scourge on society!"Soon, a wheelchair was brought over.Mom reached out to grab me, but despite the excruciating pain in my body, I pushed her away. Staggering, I sat down in the wheelchair. My conscience was clear, so I wasn't afraid to go to the police station. Only those who had truly wronged others should have felt guilty.I glanced at Charlene. She had a frail, delicate demeanor, but her eyes gleamed with cunningness."Mom, no one has the courage to wheel Matilda out, so let me do

Mom was still in shock as they pushed her out of the room.Hearing the doctor list my injuries one by one, she seemed unable to process it. After all, she thought that this was all just an act to deceive her. She couldn't understand how I could be this badly hurt.Charlene immediately rushed over and hugged Mom. Then, she started sobbing loudly."Mom, it's all my fault. I'm the one to blame. I kept your love all to myself for too long—so much so that Matilda had to hurt herself just to get your attention. She must be in so much pain. Mom, once she's stable, please let me apologize to her, okay?"Charlene's words suddenly snapped Mom out of her daze. She shifted her gaze away from the hospital room. The hesitation and uncertainty that had been in her eyes vanished instantly. At the sight of my injuries, she was suddenly reminded of Charlene's horrific corpse from her last life. I might be in pain now, but Charlene had suffered far worse than me.Tears of grief spilled from Mom's e
