Chapter 1

Author: Flori
After I graduated, I rented an apartment that was approximately 650 square feet.

Before I rented it, the agent told me that there had been a fire incident in the place, and someone had died. It was later converted into an apartment building.

But I did not mind it. After all, the rent was cheap, and the decor was simple. The only problem was that the soundproofing was bad.

A couple lived in No. 303. Whenever the sun went down, the wife would start moaning embarrassingly loudly.

But it sounded like the couple next door was arguing tonight, and the fight was getting worse. In the end, the wife’s screams nearly deafened me.

“Did someone die?” I cried out softly. The commotion next door suddenly died down.

It was at this moment that I finally realized what had happened. The soundproofing was terrible, and they could hear all the noise I made too.

‘Oh no…’ My heart leaped to my throat.

The strange silence lasted for about four seconds before I suddenly heard a piercing cry for help.

“Help! He’s going to kill me!”

It was followed by a roar and a few slaps.

I obviously could not see through the wall, but based on the sounds alone, I could guess that the slaps must have drawn blood.

I got up in a panic. I intended to knock on their door to check on the situation.

“Stay out of this, 302! If you talk, I’ll kill you!”

There was a dull thud from the other side of the wall. The man must have punched it! Dust fell on my bed.

I trembled in fear. But after some hesitation, I put on my coat and pushed open the door of my apartment.

I hurried to the apartment next door. The door was not shut tight, and I could see sparks from within.

The wife had been screaming at the top of her lungs just moments ago, but it was eerily quiet at present.

“Anyone there?!” I shouted from the door, but no one answered.

I was puzzled, but then, I heard faint gasps from within.

“Help…” That was a woman’s voice!

Was she really in trouble? My mind went blank for a moment. Gritting my teeth, I pushed open the door and went in to check.

Right in front of me was a black and white photo. It was a memorial photo.

The door to the bedroom was locked, but I saw a key in the keyhole.

I opened the door, and a foul stench of blood immediately attacked my senses.

I felt sick and flipped the switch to turn on the lights.

But the light did not turn on.

I flipped it again, but there was still no change.

“Get me out…” the wife said. This time, her voice sounded right beside my feet.

I could not see her. I could only ask, “Did you fall?”

When I crouched down and reached out, my fingertips touched something warm and sticky.

The sensation was disgusting. It felt like flesh that had been stripped of skin.

The foul stench of blood was suffocating, and I stumbled a few steps back. The memorial photo outside swayed as I bumped into the cupboard where it was placed.

I saw a torchlight beside the memorial photo, and I got up and grabbed it. When I turned around, I felt my breath hitch in my throat.

There was a woman in the room. She knelt on the floor as she stared at me from the darkness. Half of her face had been cut off, and blood flowed from it. The blood I touched had already congealed on my fingers.

“I told you. Stay out of this!”

A man’s hoarse voice came from behind the woman. Under the dim light, the woman’s head slowly split open, like a splattered watermelon.

When the woman’s head was split open, I saw the man’s face.

A sword pierced through the woman’s chest and stabbed into my own body.

“According to reports, a dismemberment case has been found at the slum area in the old town. The victim’s head was suspended from the ceiling. It seemed like the victim was involved in some sort of satanic ritual. Currently, the police are investigating the case and are urging people to stay vigilant. If you see anyone suspicious, please report to your local police station immediately.” While the news station broadcasted the news, the sun set. The fading light and the shadow in the cramped alley formed a stark divide between the light and darkness. A strange man with a severely hunched back walked into the shadow of the alley. He leaned heavily on the cane in his hand, as if something had snapped his back. When he crossed the line dividing the light and darkness, his shadow was reflected on the ground. The man’s shadow had an extra head, like something was sitting on his back. It appeared to be a woman.‘The ritual didn’t bring her back, but it brought me closer to her.’ The

The footsteps were unnervingly loud. Thud, thud, thud… In the cramped bathroom, the footsteps were erratic. Adrenaline surged through me. In my heightened state of panic, I collapsed into the bathtub behind me, which made a loud splash. I was drenched. The murky water made my skin feel sticky. I was immediately frantic and tried to get out of the bathtub, but I was so nervous that I could not get a proper grip to haul myself up. I kept falling back in. In the darkness, I sat in the bathtub. Water spilled out from it, and it soaked my clothes. The stench of blood attacked my nostrils, and I fainted. When I woke up, my eyes were sore. Everything was blurry in front of me, but I thought I saw some light. “He never figured it out until the moment he died, did he? Hehe…” I heard the wife laughing in the dark. Thud! Clang! The sound of metal hitting something made my mind clear up a little. A burly man had his back turned to me. He appeared to be pounding on somet

The wife cackled in a strange way and started crawling toward me. At that critical moment, I was so terrified that I fell on my behind. But the husband reacted quickly. He slammed the bloody bat against the wife’s face, and black smoke rose up wherever it touched her. “Go to the bathroom!” My legs felt like jelly, but with death literally crawling toward me, I had to get up and run to the bathroom. The floor was covered in soot, and I nearly slipped. The bathroom was dark and cramped. I could not see any light. When I got in, I heard the husband screaming in pain. Then, I heard someone rushing over to me. I could hear her crawling toward me. She was coming for me! I remembered what the husband had said. Once I entered the bathroom, I needed to shut the door tightly, so I was sealed in. But the wooden door of the bathroom had a crack in it. When I pulled it shut, it creaked. The sounds of someone crawling to me grew faster. I could not see what was coming at me i

The husband pointed at the windowsill. “She was so close. Just a little further, and she could have broken through the window rail and escaped. How desperate she must have been...” What surprised me was that the husband sounded besotted. “What if I had arrived sooner? Could the tragedy have been averted?” The husband moved forward. “That’s why I can’t accept it!” I looked in the direction where the husband was headed, and I noticed two candles in the corner, along with a bottle. There was a red liquid inside. Some sticky solids floated in it, but I did not know what they were. The husband said, “After the police conducted their investigation, I requested the place to remain just as it was. Her jaw was burnt so badly that it was stuck to the windowsill, and I had to cut it off with a knife. “I compressed the rest of her body and stuffed it into a small box. It’s in that bottle of blood right there.” I felt a chill in my heart, and I started inching backward. “She’s right

“I was so close! So close to leaving! I’ve been trapped here for years, and I’ve had enough of this torture! If only you hadn’t turned to look!” The wife sounded as if she was at her wits’ end. I wanted to comfort her, but when I got closer, she grabbed my neck! “Since you’re the reason why I can’t leave this place, stay here and keep me company!” she hissed fiercely, and her hands tightened around my neck and suffocated me. She looked exactly the same as she did in my dream! She was definitely not human! Both of them were not human! Suddenly, the husband, who had been standing on the balcony of the third floor, showed up by my side and smacked the wife with the bat. She fell to the ground. The man held the bat in his left hand and grabbed my collar in his right, then he dragged me back toward the apartment. I winced in pain all the while and stumbled along as I tried to break free, but his grip did not loosen. When we got to the apartment building, the husband sudden

Her pale face stood out starkly in the darkness. In my panic, I stumbled out of the closet. When I fell on the floor, I saw a man’s shoes and a bloody bat. It was the husband, and he was holding the bat when he met my gaze. “Here I was, thinking that there was no one around.” The husband cackled strangely and walked toward me. “Didn’t I tell you not to make a sound?!” his wife yelled from the closet. “Run!” An icy hand grabbed my wrist and pulled me toward the door, but the husband brought his bat up and struck it against his wife’s back. The wife collided with my back, and we crashed onto the floor. She shielded me. The husband continued hitting his wife with the bat. “I finally caught you, you cheater!” The husband cackled savagely. “Try running, I dare you! Run, and I’ll kill you again!” The wife screamed gut-wrenchingly. The impact of the heavy hits also hurt me a little. Suddenly, the wife pushed herself up. “Run!” I hurriedly got up. The wife grabbed my ha
