Miles

The storm had jolted me awake, the wind howling and rain lashing into my room through the open window. How had I forgotten to close it? Groggy and disoriented, I stumbled out of bed and trudged toward the window.

As I reached to shut it, something caught my eye—a figure in the lake behind the house, swimming under the storm.

“What the…? Is that Cheryl?” I leaned closer, squinting against the rain.

It was her. She was struggling to swim back to the shore. The storm was too strong.

Adrenaline kicked in. I slammed the window shut and bolted downstairs, my heart pounding. Racing through the rain-soaked backyard, I made my way to the lake, the wind biting at my skin.

“Cheryl? What the hell are you doing in the lake during a storm in the middle of the night?” I yelled, my voice barely carrying over the storm’s roar.

“I’m fine,” she replied, stepping out of the water, shivering violently.

“You’re not fine!” I snapped, scanning her drenched frame. She was wearing nothing but a black bi

Cheryl Five years later“Miles! Miles! Get off the couch right now!” I yelled, my heart jerking as I watched him hanging off the top edge of the couch, tiny legs dangling, trying to reach for something only he thought was worth risking his neck for.Maybe naming him after his father wasn’t such a great idea. He stresses the life out of me every single day. My eyes always have to be on him, like he’s on some secret mission to end his own life or break a limb just to see if I’m paying attention. Our relationship is bittersweet—exhausting, sometimes toxic, sometimes beautiful—exactly like the way it once was with his father.Miles Anthony Han. That’s his name. Every bit of him reminds me of Miles, and naming him after his grandfather Anthony felt right. It was only fair—Anthony loved me like a daughter, and he never got to meet them. But oh God, the older my son gets, the more he reminds me of Miles. His scowl, his smirk, the tilt of his head, his resting face, even the way he looks at

CherylTwo months of living quietly with Laura in the family house, and now—after long exhausting hours of flight—our plane was descending into London.I stared out the window, my fingers resting on my bump, and for the first time in a long while, I felt… light.I had made a rough, terrifying choice, but I was glad—deeply glad—that Laura had supported me every step of the way. She has been the mother I never had, steady and strong when I felt like I was breaking apart.I chose not to tell Miles about the babies.Yes. Babies. The scan showed twins, and Laura smiled knowingly, saying, “The Han genes,” as if it was a blessing passed down through blood. And I decided: I will not have Miles hating my children before they even take their first breath.I am not getting rid of them. Ever.If keeping them means losing Miles forever, then so be it. I don’t care anymore.Laura keeps telling me, over and over, that nothing is more important than these babies right now. And she’s right.I sent eve

CherylI was staying at a hotel, barely even myself anymore, a shadow of the woman I used to be—clinging desperately to this stupid, useless hope that Miles would suddenly realize his mistake, come to his senses, come back to me, and look for me.But nothing.Laura kept trying to reach me, but I wasn’t taking her calls. I didn’t even know where my phone was anymore. It didn’t matter. Everything felt meaningless. Anna must be worried sick too because I stopped going to work; I stopped showing up for anything.Miles told me through his lawyer that I could keep my job, that I could have some money he set aside for me—but I didn’t want it. I told the lawyer I didn’t want any of it, not a single cent, and I cut off the call.I was sick.So sick.My body was always hot, feverish, but at the same time I’d shiver, feeling cold too often. Every time I forced something down my throat it would sit like lukewarm poison in my belly. It’s crazy how badly it can hurt—physically hurt—when you miss so

CherylThe house was dead quiet.I must have finally dozed off out of pure exhaustion because the ache in my eyes told me I’d been crying before sleep dragged me under.A faint sound woke me—a door creaking open, slow and careful, like someone didn’t want to be heard.I froze, heart pounding against my ribs. My lids felt heavy as I peeled them open. The dim light from the hallway spilled into the room, and in that soft glow I saw him.Miles.He was standing near the wardrobe, his broad back to me, pulling out a few shirts and a duffel bag like a thief sneaking out in the middle of the night.I pushed the blanket aside. “Miles?” My voice was hoarse from crying. He stiffened. Didn’t turn. Just kept folding a jacket, his movements too controlled, too cold.“Miles,” I whispered again, sitting up on the bed, my bare feet touching the cold floor.“Go back to sleep,” he said flatly, finally glancing at me. His eyes were dark, emotionless, but underneath it, I could see the cracks—hurt and ra

Cheryl“Cheryl,” Minnie whispered in my ear, her voice soft but carrying concern.I blinked tiredly, turning my head toward her. She was standing there holding a small cup of water and some pills in her hand—headache pills, most likely—because my head had been pounding for hours. I hadn’t slept properly in days, not really.“Thank you,” I muttered, my voice hoarse, taking the pills and water from her.“Not on an empty stomach, Cheryl,” Laura’s voice came from behind her.I sighed heavily, feeling the weight in my chest pressing deeper. “I can’t eat anything,” I admitted, closing my fingers around the pills and setting the water aside on the nightstand.“Why? Because of Miles?” Laura’s tone rose slightly, not unkind but firm. “It’s been five days, Cheryl. Five whole days. Miles is my son, but he is an idiot for treating you like this—or even asking you to take those shots in the first place. And you are not going to die waiting for him, Cheryl.”Her words cut through me, but I shook my

Cheryl“Hey,” I whispered, staring at Miles as he finally stirred awake. I was honestly surprised to see him up this early. He’d barely had two hours of sleep; he kept tossing and turning, shifting under the sheets, reaching out to touch me throughout the night. It’s a really tough time for him, and I understand.I was packing up our things because we were leaving the family house tomorrow, heading back home. Maybe, just maybe, Miles would finally get a few days of real rest before throwing himself back into work.“Good morning… thank you,” he murmured, his voice still rough from sleep as he noticed everything I’d already packed and arranged.“It’s okay, baby. You should go back to sleep if you’re still tired. I can take care of everything,” I said softly, folding one of his shirts. He leaned in and kissed my cheek, that tired smile barely there.“It’s okay, baby. I’m not sleeping great anyway, so I might as well get up,” he replied, pushing himself to his feet and heading toward the
