Chapter 2

作者: Bagel
The next morning, Weston took me to inspect our newly built house.

It was the lakeside mansion built for their union, with sturdy defense towers, dense fir trees, and the territory's most elite patrol team.

I walked straight to the passenger side, but Weston grabbed my wrist. "Darling, let Riley have this seat. You can sit in the back for now."

Riley appeared from the porch right on cue, and Weston opened the car door for her. "She's been complaining about how noisy the training grounds are lately. She's coming with us to relax."

I climbed into the back seat without a word. "Whatever."

In the front, Weston and Riley discussed recent border patrols and Alpha council rankings, as if the back seat were empty.

Seeing them side by side, I suddenly understood. I wasn't just in the back seat; I was completely excluded from their world.

The moment she got out of the car, Riley was captivated by the greenhouse on the side of the villa. It was the one Weston had reluctantly agreed to build for my healing herbs three months ago.

Riley stood under the glass dome, her eyes shining. "The light in here is perfect. A field of purple roses would be beautiful. I could even do some publicity shots for my upcoming pack ambassador campaign here."

Weston barely hesitated. "Then this space is yours. Do whatever you want with it. I'll have the purple rose seeds shipped over tomorrow."

I stood at the doorway, struggling to hold back the stinging in my eyes.

Weston had shown almost no interest in this villa, from its location to its layout. But now he stood beside Riley, enthusiastically planning a corner that was supposed to be ours.

They looked like a true, fated pair.

Riley turned to me with a sweet smile. "By the way, Lyra, you don't mind, do you?"

My gaze went straight to Weston. "You know it's filled with the herbs I've spent months cultivating, right?"

His expression was as steady as ever. "The herbs can be put anywhere. Riley's roses need this kind of greenhouse more. The villa's basement is cool and quiet. You can move your things there."

I unclenched my reddened palms. "Do what you want."

Weston patted my head. "That's a good girl."

I turned my head to avoid his touch. He didn't even notice.

After leaving the new house, the dressmaker sent Weston a message saying my bonding ceremony gown was ready.

Riley linked her arm through mine affectionately. "I'll go with you to see it. You can't always dress so drably. You need to be eye-catching at the ceremony."

I had just slipped on the ceremonial Luna gown, embroidered with full moon patterns in white gold thread, when Riley burst in, slamming the door, her face a mask of frustration.

"Damn it. The gown I was supposed to wear tomorrow night is ruined. I have to represent the pack when I meet the envoys from the other packs. Where am I supposed to find a dress that makes a statement now?"

Weston scanned the racks of ready-to-wear gowns. "Then just pick one from here."

An attendant brought over several of the finest gowns, but he frowned and rejected them all.

Finally, his gaze landed on me. "This one will do. The white gold will complement Riley's cool skin tone. Give it to her."

The tailor spoke up in alarm. "Alpha, that is Miss Lyra's Luna gown. She came in more than twenty times just to get the embroidery on the waistline right."

Weston looked at me as if this wasn't a problem at all. It was an automatic response, as if his mind was wired to give Riley whatever she wanted.

I looked at myself in the mirror, wearing the white gold gown, and suddenly I felt nothing. There's a certain clarity that comes with being hurt one too many times.

I took off the gown and handed it to Riley. "Here. It will look beautiful on you."

Weston seemed stunned for a moment, then his expression softened. "There you go. I'll order you an even more beautiful one."

He murmured soothingly, but his eyes never left Riley.

Suddenly, he knelt on one knee, took Riley's ankle in his hand, and personally helped her into the matching high heels, even brushing a speck of dust from the toe.

I had rehearsed this scene in my mind a hundred times, wanting Weston to see how stunning I looked in the gown.

But from start to finish, Weston had only come with me once, and even then, he was constantly on the phone dealing with pack business. I remembered him saying that fussing over someone's clothes was a servant's job, something beneath him.

And now, here he was, kneeling at my sister's feet. I was finally tasting the bitter price of my foolish fantasies.

Everyone loved Riley more. My parents, and Weston too.

But who could possibly care that I had once loved him so deeply?

When I was little, my mother scolded me in front of the elders for my weak wolf form, calling me a disgrace to the family.

Weston secretly pressed a small piece of honeyed cake into my palm. "There's nothing wrong with being a little weak, Lyra. You look pretty when you're quiet."

I had held onto those words for many years.

The day Riley refused the arranged marriage and Weston turned to me, I knew I was only the second choice. But I still reached out and took his hand.

Because I wanted him so badly.

To stay by his side, I became a shadow, his planner, even his nanny, handling every trivial detail of his life. But in the end, I could never become Riley.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

[The border transport truck is ready. It leaves at midnight on the night of the bonding ceremony. I'll wait for you in the pine forest by the territory's back gate.]

I tapped out my reply: [I'll be there.]

The hall doors slowly closed behind Weston.Through the heavy doors, I heard a raw, bestial cry, so hoarse and desperate it seemed to tear his vocal cords. That was the last of his fight."He's lost his mind," Chloe said, standing by a towering window and looking down at the departing convoy."Not only did he sign that ruinous treaty, but he also threw the Alpha's Signet, the very symbol of the North's authority, into the mud."Without looking up from the next document, I said, "He deserved it."With that treaty in effect, the North's most valuable resources were drained dry.The once-mighty empire crumbled, reduced to a second-rate pack on the fringes of the continent. And Weston became a walking corpse, his soul ripped out.Three months later.Weston abdicated his position as Alpha of the North. He left the pack in Damon's care and, with only a single servant, returned to the abandoned sacred altar. He rebuilt the altar with his own hands: white jade steps, stone pillars, and a statu

The Northern Council's judgment was swift.Three days later, Riley was dragged to the execution platform.Without her wolf, she was nothing but a broken shell. The executioner pressed a red-hot brand firmly onto her cheek. The sickening smell of burning flesh filled the air. The mark of "Traitor" would be with her for life.Amid desperate screams, she was thrown into a caged prison cart and exiled to the Barren Lands forever. There was no water there, only sandstorms and man-eating beasts. My parents did not escape punishment. For their complicity and indulgence, the Council stripped them of their noble status. My father's Alpha privileges were revoked, and all family assets were confiscated. They became the lowest of the low in the North. All the obstacles had been cleared away. But some people were foolish enough to believe this meant a new beginning. The next morning, the heavy doors of the Southern main hall were pushed open.Weston had come.He came alone, carrying a large, black

The rain blurred the bloody fingerprints on the paper.Weston's hands trembled as he read, page by page. His breathing grew more ragged, his pupils constricting in horror."Two years ago... the altar's defenses were weakened..." He stared at the words, muttering in disbelief. "It was Riley? She sold the patrol routes to the rogues?!"I held my umbrella, watching coldly as his world shattered."That's right.""To ensure no one stole her spotlight, to make sure you wouldn't attend the bonding, she reassigned all of your most trusted guards.""Weston, the person who most wanted me dead wasn't some stranger. It was the princess you treasured."An inhuman roar ripped from Weston's throat. He violently crumpled the papers, his knuckles turning white. For Riley, he had postponed the bonding ceremony again and again. For Riley, he had left me alone at the sacred altar. He thought the attack was a tragic accident. It turned out to be a massacre orchestrated by the woman he cherished most. The r

The crisp sound of the slap still echoed in the grand hall.Riley clutched her swelling face, staring at Weston as if he were a stranger, too stunned to even cry."Get her out of the South," I ordered coldly, settling back into my throne."Wait!" Weston pushed away the attendant who tried to help him up.Thud.His knees hit the white jade floor with a heavy thud. The great Alpha of the North, before the shocked eyes of everyone present, knelt."Lyra, I'm begging you.""As long as you give me the cure, as long as you give me one chance. I'll do anything you ask."I looked at his groveling face and found it laughable."Alright," I said, raising an eyebrow. "The Blackthorn Grove in the South needs a laborer to gather herbs. No powers, bare-handed.""Gather one hundred blood-thorns, and I will consider giving you a single vial of the cure."The thorns of the Blackthorn Grove could easily tear through a werewolf's skin. The pain was worse than death.Weston didn't hesitate for a second. His

The great doors boomed and swung open. Two rows of heavily armed, high-ranking southern guards dropped to one knee in perfect unison.A she-wolf emerged from the shadows, dressed in a long, dark purple velvet gown, a brilliant moonstone circlet gracing her brow.A suffocatingly powerful presence instantly enveloped the hall, causing Riley's face to drain of all color.Weston's head snapped up, his eyes locking on the face on the throne. It was a face carved into his bones, the one he had cried out for in countless nightmares. But now, that face was stripped of its former meekness and humility.Weston's pupils constricted violently, and his breath hitched in his throat.CLANG!The Alpha Scepter slipped from his trembling hand, shattering the stone slab at his feet. The hall fell deathly silent.Weston's eyes were so red they looked ready to bleed, his chest heaving."Lyra…"He scrambled toward the throne, tears carving paths through the dust on his face."Mate… my mate… You're alive!"H

The car screeched to a halt at the perimeter of the altar, and he kicked the door open, lunging into the ruins like a madman. The moment he stepped into the thick smoke, a searing pain ripped through his chest. A violent cough ripped through him, and he sprayed a mouthful of blood before collapsing onto the rubble.Through the poisonous fumes, at the heart of the fire, he saw it: the tattered, blood-soaked remains of a simple white dress and a shattered lunar crown."Lyra!"A desperate, grief-stricken howl tore from his throat, echoing through the Black Forest and sending every bird in the valley scattering into flight."Alpha! Get back! The smoke hasn't cleared!" Damon yelled, rushing to pull him back."Get off me!" Weston shoved him away and plunged his hands into the scorching rubble, tearing through it piece by piece."Lyra!" His voice was raw, but he kept shouting. His fingernails tore, and his palms were shredded by silver shrapnel until they were a bloody mess. He didn't feel a
