Chapter 1

Kayson and Kaylee Hallowell huddled together on the living room couch, buzzing with excitement as they planned the trip for the day after tomorrow.

While Kayson scrolled through forest trail maps on his tablet, Kaylee picked out swimsuits on her phone.

With a fond look, Trish and Brandon Hallowell booked them the fanciest hotels. Meanwhile, I stood there, looking lost and out of place like a stranger.

Halfway through the planning, Trish said to Kayson, “I’ve reserved a spot for you at the top warrior camp. Just unwind during this trip, because the training starts when you get back.

“The pack’s warrior trials will determine who gets chosen for the next generation of warriors. This could shape your entire future, so you need to take it seriously.”

My heart dropped. For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

Four weeks earlier, I had cautiously asked Trish whether I could sit for the healer trials or stay at school, researching herbs.

At the time, Trish was busy making Kaylee’s favorite pizza. She didn’t even look up from what she was doing, her tone dismissive.

“Anna, can’t you be a little more independent? Do you really have to bother me with every little decision? Besides, with your mediocre talent, does it matter which one you choose?”

Brandon shifted his gaze to Kaylee.

“Kaylee, don’t think this is unfair. I’ve already found you an elite combat instructor. Once we’re back from the trip, you’ll get one-on-one sessions. Don’t worry about the money. Your mother and I would spend whatever it takes for you and Kayson.”

My eyes welled up.

Don’t worry about the money.

This was something they had never told me.

Back when I was a child, I wanted an herbal encyclopedia that cost a mere twenty bucks.

I brought it up once, only for Brandon to tear into me.

“Anna, how vain are you? We don’t have that kind of money.”

Yet that very afternoon, Brandon happily bought Kayson the most expensive cloak in the shop and filled an entire room with plush toys for Kaylee.

That was when the truth sank in.

We weren’t short on money. Trish and Brandon simply didn’t think I was worth spending it on.

Snuggling up against Trish, Kaylee whined.

“Why does Anna get to stay at home every day and do whatever she wants?”

Silence fell over the room.

Even Kaylee realized how absurd she sounded, her gaze shying away in guilt.

The answer already stared me in the face.

Since I was never the favored pup, Trish and Brandon didn’t want to waste a penny on me, let alone care about my future.

With the tension growing, Trish urged the family to sit down for dinner.

Kayson had his favorite steak, and Kaylee enjoyed a plate of venison.

This was how things worked in our family.

Each dinner was carefully planned around what they liked, ensuring zero favoritism between either of them.

It didn’t just stop there.

Even the study had been split right down the middle, with Kayson and Kaylee taking equal halves.

When it came to shopping, new clothes and toys always had to be bought in matching pairs.

The Hallowells even held two separate birthday bashes so neither felt shortchanged. Sadly, no one remembered my birthday.

Throughout dinner, Trish and Brandon fussed over Kayson and Kaylee, putting extra helpings on their plates.

My plate, on the other hand, sat sparse with just a few lettuce leaves and dry crusts of bread.

Kayson took a huge bite of his steak and gave me the side eye.

“Anna, is that all you’re eating?”

Kayson ladled a bowl of seafood chowder and set it in front of me.

I didn’t touch it.

Brandon’s eyes narrowed as rage overtook him.

“Anna, do you have to be so difficult? Kayson went out of his way to get you more food, and that’s still not enough? Do you expect to be spoon-fed? If you’re hungry, eat. If you’re not, get out of here and sulk in your room. You’re ruining everybody’s appetite.”

My eyes stung, and I felt an agonizing catch in my throat.

Mumbling that I wasn’t hungry, I numbly stuffed a piece of dry bread into my mouth.

I didn’t tell them that I was allergic to seafood. It wasn’t like they’d believe me anyway.

When I was ten, I’d once clung to Trish’s sleeve, crying about the rash I got from shellfish and asking for something else to eat.

Trish pushed me away and jabbed her finger at my head while tearing me a new one.

“Now you’re making up allergies because you’re too picky to eat what’s on the table? Kayson and Kaylee can eat it. Why can’t you? Go without food for a few days. Then you'll learn.”

That day, Trish locked me in the basement without access to food and water for twenty-four hours.

Ever since then, I never brought up my allergy again.

Swallowing the final bite of bread, I kept my head down and bolted upstairs to my room.

The moment my bedroom door was closed, I pulled out my phone and booked my flight to the Northern Territories.

The flight was scheduled to take off tomorrow night.

Just one more day, and I’d be gone.

Trish cried the whole way home, while Brandon’s brows were locked in a knot the whole time. The house remained foul and filthy, untouched and unattended when the Hallowells stepped through the front door. My decision to leave hit Trish hard, leaving her emotionally and physically drained. She rubbed her temples in agony and said to the twins, “Kaylee, go and wash the moldy dishes. “Kayson, make yourself useful and dump the rotting garbage.” Kaylee wasn’t having it. “Why should I wash the dishes? The mold is so disgusting! This is so unfair!” Kayson voiced his objections out loud as well. “Why should I take out the trash? It’s filled with Kaylee’s gross tissues! She should be the one to do it!” The pair’s screaming match grew intense as they hurled nasty insults at each other. Faced with yet another bitter feud, Trish and Brandon could feel their heads throbbing. Before, every time the twins started getting into it, I would quietly emerge from the shadows, take the

My disappearance terrified Trish. With shaking hands, she tried my number, but no one answered. It was as if I had disappeared from the face of the earth, erased entirely from their world. Trish was on the verge of tears from anxiety, her voice dripping with panic. “Is she really gone? But she doesn’t have any money. Where could she be?” Brandon paced around the room frantically. Eventually, he put on a brave face. “Don’t panic. She must be hiding at a friend’s place. We should reach out to her friends.” Trish unlocked her phone in a fluster and scrolled through hundreds of contacts. Ten minutes went by, and nothing concrete came up. Trish looked up in a daze. “I-I don’t know any of her friends.” Scowling, Brandon shouted, “You’re her mother, and you don’t even know who she hangs out with?” Feeling the sting of his words, Trish snapped back. “Why are you yelling at me? What? Do you know any of her friends? All you care about is Kaylee and Kayson’s training. It’

In the days after, I poured all my energy into my role as a healer in the Northern Territories. Armed with herbal expertise and antidotes, I treated and saved dozens of werewolves in just days.Initial doubt among the staff at the Healing Temple quickly gave way to unwavering reverence and respect.I was becoming stronger day by day, through my own efforts.Meanwhile, my phone blew up with notifications from the Hallowells. Trish and Brandon kept sharing photos of the twins on social media. Kaylee sipped on champagne on a yacht, while Kayson scaled cliffs in the woods. Trish and Brandon made it a point to add captions. “The pride and joy of our family—our wonderful twins.” This was their go-to strategy to bait my jealousy and push me to admit my mistakes. I didn’t care the slightest, though. In fact, it was just the most absurd thing.Trish was the first to break in the face of my silence. She posted a long message, loaded with accusations against me. “Enough is e

By early morning, the Hallowells were ready to set out. While passing my bedroom, Trish peered inside. The room was hauntingly empty, devoid of any trace of life. With rage surging within her, Trish sent me a lengthy text. Her words dripped with entitlement, carrying commanding and threatening undertones. “Anna, grow up for once. We don’t have time for your little mind games. You walked out without finishing your chores. Do you have any respect for this family? “Get back here and mop the floor and do Kayson and Kaylee’s laundry. If the house isn’t spick and span by the time we get back next week, you are no longer welcome in the house.” Once the text went through, Trish emerged with a smile. She took it for granted that her instruction was enough to make me fall back in line. Too bad that she was about to be disappointed. Before the Hallowells could even commence the drive to the airport, Kayson and Kaylee were already at each other’s throats over the trunk space.

Startled, Trish, Brandon, and Kayson scrambled up the stairs. The moment my bedroom door was slammed open, they stood there dumbfounded. The room was empty. The wardrobe had been cleared out, and even the bed had been stripped down to its frame. Trish froze, her eyes wide. “W-What’s going on? Did she pack up and leave?” Snapping back to reality, Kaylee ripped the curtains back. Through the pouring rain outside the window, I loaded my bags into a taxi and headed for the airport. Kaylee pointed out the window and shouted, “I see her! Anna’s got into a cab!” Kayson leaned in to look and snickered. “I don’t know what she thinks she’s doing. We spent all her money, and she thinks she can just run away?” Trish turned ashen. “Since that’s what she wants, she can leave for all I care! I’d like to see how long she lasts out there in the real world on her own.” As blood rushed to her head, Trish kicked the door hard. “We were nice enough to bring her along to the mall.

  • Done Fitting In   Chapter 4

While I scrambled my way back to my feet, everyone else swarmed Trish to offer comfort. Trish sank into Brandon’s arms, her teary eyes reflecting all the hurt in the world. Gripped by fury, Kaylee was eager to defend Trish’s honor. She rolled her eyes at me. “Get over yourself, Anna! It was just paying the bill, not some highway robbery. You’re so selfish. No wonder Mom and Dad can’t stand you.” Kayson scoffed. “You’re supposed to be part of the family, but I guess it means nothing to you. What’s the point of raising you?” Brandon dumped my bank card at my feet, his eyes reflecting disgust. “Stop embarrassing yourself. Get lost!” Raising my chin, I stared at the family of four. They had drained my bank account, and somehow, I was blamed for everything. I hadn’t done a single thing. For eighteen years, Trish and Brandon sent me away to a foster family. They went on trips without me. Since Trish and Brandon were obsessed with fairness, I assumed that by playing
