Chapter 2

Author: Cash Cat
My phone buzzed with a notification—a message in the firm's group chat.

Neville had posted a formal commendation praising Klara.

[For demonstrating exceptional dedication by continuing to work despite a physical injury and refusing to let personal matters interfere with company resources.]

Every word felt like a deliberate jab at me, portraying my desperation over our sick daughter as nothing more than petty emotional blackmail.

Before I could even process it, a voice message arrived from our neighbor, Carmen Fernandez.

"Rita, honey, I was reviewing the security footage and noticed Camille went down to the parking garage looking for Neville tonight. It was freezing out there!

"Neville was sitting in his car, talking on the phone. Why didn't he let the poor girl inside? She was standing in that icy draft for over half an hour!"

The news struck me dumb.

So, Camille hadn't simply suffered a sudden asthma attack out of nowhere. She'd gone looking for her father, only to be left outside in the bitter cold.

A shudder ran through me as I turned to glare at Neville.

Before I could confront him, the doorbell rang. A courier stood outside with a beautifully wrapped package. Inside was a set of high-end aromatherapy candles sent by Klara, along with a gift card tucked beneath the ribbon.

The message read: [Thank you, Mr. Murphy, for taking time out of your busy schedule to help me pick out work clothes. I hope these candles bring you sweet dreams!]

Neville gladly accepted the package and lit one of the candles right in front of me.

"Klara is far more considerate and understanding than you'll ever be," he said dryly.

I didn't bother arguing.

Instead, I quietly returned to the second room and slipped a freshly printed draft of our divorce settlement into Camille's school folder.

This time, no amount of glue could put the broken wish jar back together.

...

The next morning, a notice appeared in the kindergarten's group chat: a mandatory fall parent-teacher conference was scheduled for that afternoon, and both parents were required to attend.

When I walked out of the bedroom with the notice in hand, Neville was sitting at the dining table, sipping his morning coffee.

I started, "You're free this afternoon. Come to Camille's parent-teacher conference."

He set down his mug and pointed at the empty glass jar on the table.

"You don't have any slips left for this month."

"It's only a two-hour meeting."

"If we don't respect the system, what's the point of having the wish jar in the first place?"

With that, he pulled an arcade coupon from his wallet and tossed it onto the table as casually as if he were handing out spare change.

"Consider this special compensation for Camille. I'm extremely busy, and I need to be at the firm."

The sheer absurdity of it left me speechless.

Camille was still recovering from the asthma attack and wasn't supposed to engage in strenuous physical activity. Yet Neville couldn't even remember her medical condition.

"Does the money you earn give you the right to buy your way out of every family obligation?"

Neville rose from his chair, completely unbothered.

"Without my financial support, how else would you afford a life where you don't have to bow to anyone?"

He spoke with such entitlement, as though he alone were responsible for everything our family had. I closed my eyes, remembering what he'd told me six years ago when he first gave me the wish jar.

"This jar is meant to filter out all the mundane troubles of the world. As long as you draw a slip, you'll always be my princess."

It turned out his promises had an expiration date.

My phone buzzed again. This time, the notification was from a legal aid center in my hometown.

[Please attend your scheduled virtual interview tomorrow afternoon.]

Years ago, I'd graduated as one of the top students in my program and landed a promising position as a legal assistant.

I'd given up a full-time job offer to build a home with Neville. Now it was time to reclaim my dignity.

Neville called me that afternoon.

"Where's the keepsake I had made to celebrate Camille's first month?" he demanded impatiently. "Klara's been having a string of bad luck lately, so I want to lend it to her for a little extra protection."

"I sold it."

"What?"

"When Camille was in the ER last night, your card hit its daily transaction limit," I explained slowly. "I sold the keepsake to a scrap dealer to cover the remaining five hundred dollars of her medical bill."

A heavy silence fell over the line, followed by Neville's snort.

"You've really become obsessed with money. It's pathetic."

Before I could respond, a Venmo notification appeared on my screen.

[Neville Murphy sent you $500. Memo: Money for the keepsake. Stop acting like a beggar.]

I locked my phone and went to the parent-teacher conference alone.

With no father beside her, Camille was pushed into a corner by the other children. She kept her head down and whispered, "Mom... does Dad not want me anymore?"

Her words left me heartbroken.

Just then, a broadcast notification appeared in the parents' group chat. It was a livestream of an award ceremony at the elite early childhood center next door.

I tapped the video, and the scene on the screen made my heart sink.

Neville sat in the front row, looking relaxed and smiling warmly, with Klara seated right beside him.

The host made an enthusiastic announcement.

"Special thanks to Mason's aunt and our distinguished guest, Mr. Murphy, for joining us today!"

My blood ran cold as I stared at the screen.

Neville couldn't be bothered to attend his own daughter's parent-teacher conference, yet he'd made a grand appearance for his assistant's nephew.

The irony was almost laughable.

Christmas arrived, blanketing the city in a festive glow.Camille had fully recovered, and she hadn't suffered a single asthma attack since. To celebrate her recovery, Simeon rented out the largest indoor children's amusement park in the metropolitan area for the day.I watched Camille prance around in her princess dress, laughing as she plunged into the colorful ball pit. For a moment, the sight brought back a memory I hadn't thought about in a long time: the fifty-dollar discount voucher Neville had once tossed onto the table.Back then, even taking Camille to a playground meant gauging Neville's mood and waiting for his approval. Now, thanks to the money I'd earned through my own hard work and expertise, I could give my daughter unshakeable joy and complete security.Simeon walked over with two cups of hot coffee and handed one to me."What are you looking at so intently?"He followed my gaze toward Camille and smiled."I just received a notification from the bar association

Three months later, the first snow of winter fell over the city.I had won one high-profile case after another, and my reputation had soared throughout the regional legal community. In recognition of my performance, Simeon officially promoted me to senior partner at the firm.On the day I received my appointment letter, I stopped by the municipal appellate court to file an important case document. As I entered the lobby, a shrill commotion erupted near the security checkpoint."You can't treat us like this! My son is a high-profile attorney! How dare you garnish my pension?"I recognized the voice immediately and stopped in my tracks.Maeve was sprawled across the cold marble floor, wailing and throwing a furious tantrum. Several court officers stood around her, looking exasperated. She had stubbornly refused to vacate the seized property, and the court had now begun enforcing its judgment against her. Apparently, the enforcement measures had extended to garnishing her pension, t

As I stepped out of the courtroom, an overwhelming sense of lightness washed over me.Simeon opened the passenger door of his car with effortless grace. "A resounding victory for your first case back. Brilliantly done!"He smiled warmly, his eyes filled with genuine admiration.I smiled back. "I owe a lot of that to your guidance and mentorship over the past few weeks."He shook his head gently. "You succeeded because you were already strong enough to stand on your own. The firm is hosting a celebratory dinner for you tonight, and I've already arranged for someone to pick up Camille."I settled into the passenger seat, leaving Neville's desperate, hollow face behind the car window. His living hell, however, was only beginning.Because the divorce trial had been open to the public, news of his psychological abuse of his wife and daughter quickly spread throughout the city. With a subtle push from Simeon's network in the legal community, the details soon reached far beyond the co

On the day of the hearing, the first autumn rain fell over the city.I took my seat at the plaintiff's table, while Neville sat opposite me.He had chosen to represent himself rather than hire an attorney. His tie was crooked, his eyes were sunken, and his entire appearance radiated a hollow, lifeless despair.Yet the moment he looked at me, a flicker of hope appeared in his eyes, as though some part of him still believed he could persuade me to change my mind.Simeon sat in the front row of the gallery and gave me a subtle nod of encouragement. Then the judge struck the gavel, and the hearing officially began.Neville spoke first. "Your Honor, I object to this divorce. Our marriage is far from irretrievably broken. I still deeply love my wife and daughter. What happened between us was nothing more than a series of domestic disputes, and I'm more than willing to make amends."He was trying to appeal to the court's emotions rather than address what he had done.Turning toward me

"Rita!"Neville's voice was ragged and hoarse as he called out to me.He rushed forward, reaching out to pull Camille into his arms. But the moment she saw him, she let out a terrified shriek and buried her face against my chest, clinging tightly to my legs."Bad man! Go away!" she cried, trembling violently. "They tore my drawing book, and you refused to help me!"Neville froze, his hands hovering helplessly in midair."Camille, I was wrong. I didn't know that was your emergency medicine," he choked out, his eyes filling with guilt. Then he turned to me, desperate to explain himself. "I fired Klara. I sent her straight to the police station and filed charges against her for unlawful conversion of property."I even burned those leg warmers she borrowed. I know the truth now. I was such a self-centered fool!"He poured out his remorse as though admitting his mistakes should be enough to earn my gratitude and win me back. Yet I simply watched him in silence, finding his desperate

Dawn was breaking when the train pulled into the station.I bundled Camille tightly into her jacket and carried her through the arrival gate.As I stepped outside, I took a deep breath. For the first time in a long while, even the crisp morning air tasted like freedom. After settling Camille in, I arranged for a new phone line and changed into a sharp professional suit. Then, right on time, I sat down in front of the interview camera at the local legal aid center.Six years as a housewife hadn't erased my expertise as a top-tier legal professional. After three grueling hours of written tests and a mock courtroom defense, I scored higher than every other applicant. The department director hired me on the spot, offering a base salary of $8,000 a month plus performance bonuses. My nose stung with emotion as I held the employment contract. So, I didn't need to roll the dice or depend on luck to provide for Camille.I could build a stable life for us through my own abilities, and I w
