Chapter 3

Author: Cash Cat
I had barely stepped through the front door with Camille when Klara pushed her way inside.

Neville had long since registered her fingerprints in our smart lock, so she let herself in as though she belonged there.

Carrying a stack of case files, she cheerfully slipped into the guest slippers she kept at our house.

"Hey, Rita!" She greeted me smoothly. "Mr. Murphy said he left a few files at the firm, so I stopped by to pick them up on my way."

Without asking for permission, she picked up Neville's mug, poured herself a glass of water, and took a leisurely sip. "Accompanying him to that early childhood center today totally wore me out!"

Neville walked in right behind her, as if her presence in our home were the most natural thing in the world. I picked up Camille's torn picture book, crossed the room, and slammed it onto the coffee table in front of him.

"So, this is what you meant by being busy?" I demanded, pointing at the ripped pages. "Because you refused to show up, Camille's classmates tore her book apart. And where were you? Putting on a show for someone else's nephew?"

Neville frowned as he took the mug from Klara's hands.

"That was an important networking opportunity with a major client," he replied defensively. "Klara's sister is one of our firm's key financial backers.

"It was business networking, so it didn't violate our household rules. As for Camille's torn book, that's your responsibility. You should have taught her how to manage her emotions instead of blaming me for everything."

As always, he found a way to shift every bit of blame onto me.

The sheer absurdity of it all made everything feel meaningless. Instead of arguing with him, I crouched down and silently gathered the torn scraps of paper from the floor.

Then I took out a glue stick and began painstakingly piecing the pages back together, one strip at a time.

Neville apparently assumed I was giving him the cold shoulder again. His expression darkened as he walked over to the wish jar and pulled out several blank slips of paper.

"To prevent you from throwing tantrums over things like this again, I'm reducing your monthly draw allowance from three times to just once."

Standing beside him, Klara covered her mouth and giggled.

"Hasn't Rita drawn her slip for this month yet? Why don't I draw one for her? Let's see if I have better luck."

Before I could say anything, she reached into the glass jar, swirled her hand around, and pulled out a slip. "Oh, my! Look at that! I drew Cook Dinner!"

Then she turned to me with an exaggerated sigh. "Fair is fair, right? Mr. Murphy said he's been craving the food you make."

They were using my wish slip to make me wait on them hand and foot. But I didn't even bother looking at either of them.

Instead, I tightened the cap on the glue stick, picked up Camille, and grabbed our jackets from the entryway rack.

"Come on, sweetheart. I'm taking you out for dinner."

Before leaving, I pulled a thick black marker from my bag and drew a firm line through the Monthly Rules column on the foyer board.

...

The following morning, my mother-in-law, Maeve Murphy, showed up at our doorstep carrying a bag of discounted vegetables. The moment she stepped inside, she began complaining.

"Those expensive asthma medications are a complete waste of money! I got some home remedies from an old woman at church. Just mix it into Camille's oatmeal, and it will work ten times better than those prescriptions!"

Rather than argue with her about the dangers of giving a child unverified remedies, I took the bottle from her and tossed it straight into the trash.

Maeve's face immediately fell. She pulled out her phone and called Neville to complain, and when he returned home that evening, he didn't reprimand his mother.

Instead, he turned to me and issued an order.

"My mom has a lot of cardboard and other odds and ends with nowhere to store them. Clear out the second bedroom for her."

But that was Camille's bedroom.

I reasoned, "Cardboard can collect moisture and grow mold. Camille's respiratory system can't handle that kind of environment."

He was unimpressed. "Stop using the kid as an excuse. Who pays the mortgage on this house?"

Knowing that arguing with him would get me nowhere, I decided not to engage in another shouting match. Camille's health and safety mattered more than winning an argument with him.

Instead, I retrieved her emergency first-aid kit, which contained the fast-acting medication she needed during a severe asthma attack.

Because the medication was small and could easily be overlooked in an emergency, I had deliberately stored it in a bright red box so I could find it quickly.

Then I dragged a chair into the corner of the living room and placed the kit on the highest shelf of the storage cabinet, where it would be out of the way but still accessible to me.

  • Done Playing Chance with His Heart   Chapter 10

Christmas arrived, blanketing the city in a festive glow.Camille had fully recovered, and she hadn't suffered a single asthma attack since. To celebrate her recovery, Simeon rented out the largest indoor children's amusement park in the metropolitan area for the day.I watched Camille prance around in her princess dress, laughing as she plunged into the colorful ball pit. For a moment, the sight brought back a memory I hadn't thought about in a long time: the fifty-dollar discount voucher Neville had once tossed onto the table.Back then, even taking Camille to a playground meant gauging Neville's mood and waiting for his approval. Now, thanks to the money I'd earned through my own hard work and expertise, I could give my daughter unshakeable joy and complete security.Simeon walked over with two cups of hot coffee and handed one to me."What are you looking at so intently?"He followed my gaze toward Camille and smiled."I just received a notification from the bar association

Three months later, the first snow of winter fell over the city.I had won one high-profile case after another, and my reputation had soared throughout the regional legal community. In recognition of my performance, Simeon officially promoted me to senior partner at the firm.On the day I received my appointment letter, I stopped by the municipal appellate court to file an important case document. As I entered the lobby, a shrill commotion erupted near the security checkpoint."You can't treat us like this! My son is a high-profile attorney! How dare you garnish my pension?"I recognized the voice immediately and stopped in my tracks.Maeve was sprawled across the cold marble floor, wailing and throwing a furious tantrum. Several court officers stood around her, looking exasperated. She had stubbornly refused to vacate the seized property, and the court had now begun enforcing its judgment against her. Apparently, the enforcement measures had extended to garnishing her pension, t

As I stepped out of the courtroom, an overwhelming sense of lightness washed over me.Simeon opened the passenger door of his car with effortless grace. "A resounding victory for your first case back. Brilliantly done!"He smiled warmly, his eyes filled with genuine admiration.I smiled back. "I owe a lot of that to your guidance and mentorship over the past few weeks."He shook his head gently. "You succeeded because you were already strong enough to stand on your own. The firm is hosting a celebratory dinner for you tonight, and I've already arranged for someone to pick up Camille."I settled into the passenger seat, leaving Neville's desperate, hollow face behind the car window. His living hell, however, was only beginning.Because the divorce trial had been open to the public, news of his psychological abuse of his wife and daughter quickly spread throughout the city. With a subtle push from Simeon's network in the legal community, the details soon reached far beyond the co

On the day of the hearing, the first autumn rain fell over the city.I took my seat at the plaintiff's table, while Neville sat opposite me.He had chosen to represent himself rather than hire an attorney. His tie was crooked, his eyes were sunken, and his entire appearance radiated a hollow, lifeless despair.Yet the moment he looked at me, a flicker of hope appeared in his eyes, as though some part of him still believed he could persuade me to change my mind.Simeon sat in the front row of the gallery and gave me a subtle nod of encouragement. Then the judge struck the gavel, and the hearing officially began.Neville spoke first. "Your Honor, I object to this divorce. Our marriage is far from irretrievably broken. I still deeply love my wife and daughter. What happened between us was nothing more than a series of domestic disputes, and I'm more than willing to make amends."He was trying to appeal to the court's emotions rather than address what he had done.Turning toward me

"Rita!"Neville's voice was ragged and hoarse as he called out to me.He rushed forward, reaching out to pull Camille into his arms. But the moment she saw him, she let out a terrified shriek and buried her face against my chest, clinging tightly to my legs."Bad man! Go away!" she cried, trembling violently. "They tore my drawing book, and you refused to help me!"Neville froze, his hands hovering helplessly in midair."Camille, I was wrong. I didn't know that was your emergency medicine," he choked out, his eyes filling with guilt. Then he turned to me, desperate to explain himself. "I fired Klara. I sent her straight to the police station and filed charges against her for unlawful conversion of property."I even burned those leg warmers she borrowed. I know the truth now. I was such a self-centered fool!"He poured out his remorse as though admitting his mistakes should be enough to earn my gratitude and win me back. Yet I simply watched him in silence, finding his desperate

Dawn was breaking when the train pulled into the station.I bundled Camille tightly into her jacket and carried her through the arrival gate.As I stepped outside, I took a deep breath. For the first time in a long while, even the crisp morning air tasted like freedom. After settling Camille in, I arranged for a new phone line and changed into a sharp professional suit. Then, right on time, I sat down in front of the interview camera at the local legal aid center.Six years as a housewife hadn't erased my expertise as a top-tier legal professional. After three grueling hours of written tests and a mock courtroom defense, I scored higher than every other applicant. The department director hired me on the spot, offering a base salary of $8,000 a month plus performance bonuses. My nose stung with emotion as I held the employment contract. So, I didn't need to roll the dice or depend on luck to provide for Camille.I could build a stable life for us through my own abilities, and I w
