Chapter 9

Author: Shirley
"Mr. Throne," Killian began, his voice cold and heavy with authority.

"If you touch my fiancée again, by tomorrow morning the coordinates for the Throne family's last arms supply line will be on Interpol's desk."

Carter didn't hear him. He looked up, revealing a scar that ran from his temple to his jaw.

"Remember this? You gave me this scar with a broken bottle during our third divorce. But I never blamed you..."

"You deserved it."

I finally spoke.

"Because that day, I walked in to find Tessa lying on our bed, wearing my wedding dress."

I broke free from his grasp and gave him one last look before leaving.

"Love isn't possession and control. It isn't a toy to be used and discarded. Carter, you've never known the first thing about love."

"When you've seen what it's like to stand in the sun, you realize just how pathetic the darkness is."

With that, I took Killian's hand and walked out of the gallery without looking back.

As Killian held the car door for me, I could still hear Carter's

"I don't want any of it anymore..."Carter's voice was broken, like a prisoner giving his final confession."Not the power, not the family... I only want you.""Maeve, this was our beginning. Have you forgotten? Can we start over? Please?"Killian's grip on my hand suddenly tightened, his breathing uneven. I knew he was afraid I might still have some lingering pity for Carter. But how could I?I gave his hand a gentle squeeze, signaling that he had nothing to worry about.I didn't even spare a glance at the ring. I nodded to the officiant. "It's time to begin the ceremony."I saw Carter carve the letters of my name, Maeve, into his arm with a knife, the blood mingling with rain on the stone steps.Killian informed me, "The Throne family has completely abandoned him. He has nowhere else to go."I didn't linger, but walked resolutely toward the altar.Just as the priest began to read the vows, Carter broke through the final line of defense. He stumbled into the church, holding up the sil

Carter found me at a private gallery in London, while I was on a date with my new boyfriend, an old childhood friend named Killian.Inside the Victorian-era glass conservatory, Killian's fingertips traced the rim of his champagne flute. For three years, this business magnate from the Sterling family, a man who held the reins of European finance, yet only ever showed this gentle side to me."Twenty years and four months since I first met you."He suddenly produced a Tiffany-blue velvet box from the inner pocket of his bespoke suit."I can't wait any longer."The moment the velvet box opened, it seemed as if all the sunlight in the conservatory converged on the star-cut sapphire inside.A twelve-carat Kashmir sapphire, encircled by more than twenty flawless diamonds, like the brightest star in the night sky."I had my people retrieve it from Graff last month."He took my wrist."It suits you even better than I imagined."This man, who commanded hundreds of billions in the business world,

As the plane landed at Zurich Airport, I looked out the window at the snow-capped peaks of the Alps and felt as if I were in another lifetime.Walking out of the terminal, an old gentleman in a gray cashmere coat was already waiting.Antonio, one of Europe's most renowned antique restorers and a dear friend of my late father. For Carter, I had betrayed my family's tradition and rejected the legitimate life my father had planned for me, a life in the sun.It had been six years since I'd last touched a paintbrush."My child..."I choked back a sob and threw myself into his arms."I'm sorry. I failed my father. I can't believe I threw away my own talent for a monster like Carter."Antonio held me tightly, without a single word of blame for my past foolishness. He just said, "It's good to have you back."Tears streamed down my face. I finally understood. My only true salvation was to escape that world of blood and lies.I had been so bewitched, to think that Carter, a man who had divorced

Carter moved through his Manhattan penthouse like a walking corpse. As he pushed open the heavy, bulletproof door, a familiar scent hit him.It was the rich, sweet-and-sour aroma of tomato and basil, mingled with sautéed eggplant: Sicilian caponata. It was Maeve's specialty, a traditional dish.Whenever he returned late at night after a firefight, she would always leave a bowl of warm soup for him.His heart hammered in his chest, and a wild spark of hope ignited in his dead eyes."Maeve? Is that you?"Ignoring the soot and grime covering him, he stumbled into the kitchen. "I knew it... I knew it was all fake..."But the sight of the person at the stove froze him in place. The smile vanished from his face. The figure, wearing a sensual silk nightgown, was stirring the clay pot with a spoon.Seeing him, she flashed a triumphant smile."Carter, you're back? I knew you'd be hungry."All his hopes turned to dust in an instant.Tessa was wearing Maeve's apron, tied over a sheer nightgown. C

"Goodbye, ex-husband."From the speedboat, I watched the towering flames behind me. A sense of finality, of release, finally washed over me.Waves of heat rolled across Lake George, burning the night sky crimson. His voice was hoarse and desperate, as if he himself were on the verge of collapse."Capo! You can't go in! The beams have collapsed!"Two burly Soldatos grabbed his arms, but they could barely restrain the man consumed by madness.Carter shattered the nose of the Soldato to his left with an elbow strike. "Get off me! She's in there, waiting for me. She told me she'd wait!"Carter spotted Ava and lunged, grabbing her arm like it was his last lifeline."Where did she go?!"Ava scoffed and wrenched her arm free."Stop acting, Carter. Don't you think it's a little late for that?""You're lying! Tell me this is just one of your sick jokes! Right?!""A sick joke?" Ava sneered, her eyes a mixture of pity and mockery. "Do you think this is just another one of your childish games?""C
