Chapter 1

"I was too busy yesterday, Xavier," my childhood friend, Isabelle Nelmes, said. "Connor's shoes didn't fit him. I was delayed when I took him to change them."

She sat on the living room couch and offered a peeled apple to my brother, Connor Sayles. She then grabbed a tissue and languidly wiped her hands. Her voice was calm when she spoke.

I stood at the door and took in the harmonious air in the living room around the four of them.

Dad was reading the newspaper, while Mom was peeling oranges for Connor. My sister, Hannah Sayles, was checking Borealin's weather on Connor's behalf. Meanwhile, Isabelle, who had promised to pick me up for dinner the day before, was gazing affectionately at Connor.

"It's fine," I said as I took off my shoes and walked over to the coffee table.

Hannah frowned as she placed her phone down. "What's with the attitude, Xavier? Isabelle's explaining the situation to you out of the goodness of her heart. You're a grown man. Why are you showing us attitude?"

Mom patted the back of her hand, saying, "Don't berate Xavier so much. He just came back."

She then turned to look at me. "Connor has had a weak constitution since he was a child, Xavier. He'll definitely have trouble lasting through Borealin University's orientation. Isabelle was just trying to take care of him. You're his brother. Don't be so petty."

I looked at Mom and calmly said, "I'm not mad."

Connor shot me a timid look as he bit into his apple. "Are you mad at me because I stole Isabelle from you, Xavier? Perhaps I should just go by myself—"

"No," Isabelle said, interrupting him before turning to look at me. "You're very independent, Xavier. You won't have any trouble going to Borealin and completing the registration. Connor's not like you. He's more sensitive. He won't be able to do it without me by his side."

She used the gentlest voice to break the promise that she initially made to me as if it was the most natural thing in the world.

I nodded. "Alright."

Isabelle was briefly stunned.

In the past, I would have gotten into a fight with her with reddened eyes if we were in this sort of situation. However, what she didn't know was that when someone became utterly disappointed, they would even lose the will to start an argument.

"I came back to take the family registry," I said as I looked at Dad. "The university needs a copy of it."

Dad didn't even bother lifting his head as he pointed at one of the TV cabinet's drawers. "It's there. Grab it yourself. Put it back once you're done making your copies. Connor's also going to need it when he files his paperwork in the next two days."

I walked over to the TV cabinet, pulled open the drawer, and slipped the family registry into my bag. "I'll be going now."

"Wait," Isabelle called out to me as she rose to her feet. "Let's have dinner together later. Consider it my compensation to you."

"Didn't you say that you were going to help me pick out a suitcase tonight, Isabelle?" Connor asked, tugging on her sleeve.

Isabelle patted his hand and said, "We can go after dinner. Don't worry."

As I looked at her, I gently shook my head and said, "No need. I have other business to attend to."

I then turned around, pushed the door open, and left the house. I heard Hannah scoff right before the door clicked shut behind me.

"His temper is getting worse by the day. Just leave him be."

I didn't look back and continued making my way downstairs. The blazing sunlight stung my eyes. I brushed my fingers against the family registry in my bag. I was the only one who knew that I had no plans to return it.

I placed the family registry on the table after returning to my rented apartment. Just then, my phone vibrated. Isabelle had sent me a message.

"Are you still mad?" she asked. "Connor hurt his feet because of his shoes yesterday. I couldn't just abandon him. You were always so understanding in the past."

I stared at the words on the screen, but I didn't reply.

I was only understanding in the past because I knew that by behaving that way, I would win Isabelle's and my family's favor. However, I gradually realized that they believed that I deserved to endure hardship because I was understanding.

I tapped on my school's academic affairs system. The page showed that I had been accepted into Borealin University. I tapped on the button at the bottom of the page that allowed me to change campuses.

"You have requested to transfer to Warreno University. Please click 'Yes' to confirm your selection."

Warreno University was located in the northwest, thousands of miles away from here. The classes were extremely tough, but it had a national-level research lab.

Most importantly, Isabelle and Connor wouldn't be there.

I tapped on the "Yes" button without any hesitation.

I received a full scholarship and a guaranteed spot in the university's graduate program during my senior year. The sandy winds of Warreno were as strong as ever, but I had completely adapted to living there. The Sayles stopped seeking me out in the last few years. Apparently, Hannah was buried to her elbows in work because her company was going through a crisis. Mom fell ill because of excessive longing and was hospitalized.Meanwhile, Connor moved back to Borealin because he couldn't stand living in his old home. However, he ended up getting expelled from the university because of his abysmal results. In the end, all of them were paying for the consequences of their favoritism. However, I didn't care what happened to them anymore.…As the valedictorian, I walked up the stage to give a speech during my graduation ceremony. I stood in front of the microphone in my graduation robes and looked at the packed crowd below the stage."When I first came to Warreno, I felt like a blade

The backstage hallway was very quiet. The only sound came from the low hum of the air conditioner.Isabelle's hand was suspended in midair. She was deathly pale."Selfish?" she mumbled the word over and over again, her eyes shining with pain. "I just want to make amends, Xavier. I want to transfer the ownership of my apartment to you. I also contacted the best advisor in Borealin for you—""I don't need any of it," I said, looking at her coldly. "You only want to make amends to soothe your own guilt. Do you really believe that I'll fall to your feet in gratitude like in the past just because you give me some materialistic things and special privileges? You're wrong, Isabelle."I stared into Isabelle's eyes. My voice was completely calm when I continued, "What I wanted in the past was for you to tilt the umbrella slightly over me on rainy days. I wanted you to take my side when others were criticizing me. But you gave those privileges to Connor instead."I've learned to hold my own

Winter in Warreno arrived early.I had a breakthrough at the current phase of my experiment during the first snowfall. Elise helped me apply for a special scholarship and also recommended me to participate in the National Research and Innovation Competition. My busy daily life nearly made me forget the people of my past until I received a letter from Borealin one day. There was no sender on the envelope, but I recognized the familiar handwriting. It was from Mom."Dad and I visited the rented apartment that you were living in, Xavier. You left behind the clothes, shoes, and high school textbooks that we bought for you. You didn't leave a trace of yourself behind. You didn't even take a single photo."Hannah found the suitcase that broke during your middle school days under your bed. She sat on the floor and cried for a long time. We've learned our lesson, Xavier. We always thought that you were strong. We thought that you didn't care about anything because you're a man."Can you p

Isabelle stood rooted to the spot. "Stopped having anything to do with each other?" she spat out before chuckling. She couldn't quite hide the panic in her laughter. "Xavier, do you really believe that you can anger me just by finding a random woman to put on an act? We've known each other for over a decade. I know you better than anyone else."She pointed at Elise and said firmly, "You don't like her at all. You're just using her to force me to concede to you."As I took in Isabelle's self-righteous expression, I couldn't help but feel how pathetic I was before. I must have been blind to trail after such an extremely arrogant woman like her for over a decade."You think too highly of yourself, Isabelle," I said, looking at her calmly. "Do you really think that I'm just putting on an act? Fine. I'll just have to make myself clear. "I've never been more certain than I am now that I like Warreno, my major, and my current life. As for you and the rest of the Sayles, I started preten

I stood at the top of the steps and looked down at Isabelle from the tip of my nose. "What are you doing here?"Isabelle made her way up the steps and tried to grab my hand, but I quickly dodged out of the way. Her expression darkened as her hand was left suspended in midair."It's been a month, Xavier," she said. "Your anger must have faded by now."She then pulled out a box from her pocket and offered it to me. "This watch caught Connor's eye when we went shopping a few days ago. I thought that I might as well buy one for you too to congratulate you on starting university."I looked at the box, refusing to touch it. "Might as well?" I asked, barking out a mocking laugh. "Do you think that I'll treasure everything that you give me just because it's something that Connor didn't want? Or just because you thought you 'might as well' get something for me too, Isabelle?"Isabelle's expression shifted slightly. "What are you trying to say? This watch costs thousands of dollars. Didn'

The sandy winds of Warreno gave me a hard time during the first week of the semester. I ended up fainting in the square during orientation due to hypoglycemia.I found myself lying on the bed in the infirmary when I regained consciousness. A woman in a white shirt stood next to the bed, holding a glass of warm water."Have some water," she said. Her voice was gentle, and her grip was firm when she offered the glass to me."Thank you," I said, taking the glass from her."I'm Elise Amery, a junior. I'm also this semester's assistant advisor," she said as she sat on the chair next to the bed.Elise glanced at my name tag before asking, "Xavier Sayle?""That's right.""I've heard of you," she said, smiling. "You could have remained on the main campus with your results. Why did you put in a request to transfer to Warreno?"I cradled the warm glass between my hands as I looked down at the surface of the water. "Because it's quiet here."Elise didn't question me further. Instead, sh
