Chapter 5

Author: Cher
Jessica's voice came through the phone, rough with tears. "Chloe? Can I stay with you tonight?"

I took a deep breath and steadied my voice. "Jessica, what happened? Do you need help?"

She sobbed as she spoke. "I fought with Rex again. He was drunk and tried to hit me. I have nowhere to go right now."

It was exactly the same as in my past life. Jessica always came to me after fighting with her violent boyfriend, Rex Henderson, and I always took her in without hesitation.

I'd never had many friends, and she had been the only one who'd treated me kindly since college.

In my past life, I truly thought of her as a friend, and whenever she had a problem, I did everything I could to help. I didn't realize that every time she came to me, it was so she could sneak around with Leo.

I made my voice sound shocked and sympathetic. "That's horrible. How could he do that to you? Of course, you can come over. I'll come pick you up."

Relief softened Jessica's voice. "Really? You're the best. I'll wait for you at the downtown cafe."

"I'll be there soon."

After I hung up, I slipped on my coat and grabbed my car keys.

It was time to set the last piece into place.

As I drove downtown, my thoughts drifted back to that night in my past life.

Jessica had cried as she told me Rex had hit her again, and I'd taken her home, my heart aching for her. Leo had looked concerned, but underneath it, he'd been thrilled.

I'd been a complete idiot. I'd offered to sleep in the guest room and given Jessica my bedroom.

Then, in the middle of the night, I realized Leo wasn't beside me anymore, and I heard their low, restrained breathing.

Back then, I'd lied to myself. I told myself I must've imagined it. Looking back now, I realized how stupid I'd been.

At the cafe, Jessica sat in a corner booth, her eyes swollen and red, her makeup slightly smudged.

When she saw me, she rushed over and hugged me. "Chloe, thanks for letting me stay with you."

I patted her back. "Don't say that. We're best friends. You should've left that asshole Rex a long time ago."

Jessica bit her lip. "I know, but… I'm scared of being alone."

I held her hand. "You're not alone. You still have me. Come on, let's go home."

In the car, Jessica kept ranting about Rex's violent streak. "He said I was his property, and he wouldn't let me talk to other men. He even meant Leo. He said the way Leo looked at me was wrong."

I almost laughed.

Rex wasn't wrong. Leo really did want his girlfriend, and Jessica was just pretending she didn't notice.

When we got back to Leo's apartment, I unlocked the door with my key.

Leo was sitting on the couch watching TV. When he saw Jessica, surprise flashed in his eyes, but concern took over right away.

He stood up. "Jessica? What happened? You look upset."

Jessica wiped at her tears. "Rex went crazy again. If it weren't for Chloe, I wouldn't even know where I'd go."

Leo walked over and gently touched Jessica's shoulder. "Don't worry. You're safe here."

I watched the way they moved around each other. That easy closeness between them made me feel sick, but I had to keep up the act.

I spoke gently. "Jessica, go take a shower first. I'll get you some pajamas. Leo, can you stay with her for a bit? I'll go make something to eat."

Leo nodded, and something flickered in his eyes. "Of course."

In the kitchen, I could hear their voices drifting in from the living room.

"Is she okay?" Leo asked.

Jessica gave a soft laugh. "She's still so naive. She has no idea about us—"

"Keep your voice down," Leo warned.

I clenched my fists and forced myself to stay calm.

Before long, Jessica came out of the shower wearing my pajamas.

I pretended to yawn. "I'm kind of tired tonight. You two can keep talking. I'm going to bed. Jessica, call me if you need anything."

Jessica hugged me. "Thanks, Chloe. You're the best friend anyone could ask for."

I went back to the bedroom and quietly closed the door.

Then I pulled a tiny listening device out of my bag. I'd gotten it earlier that day from the surveillance systems company.

I crept into the living room and, while they weren't paying attention, stuck it under the couch.

Back in the bedroom, I put on my headphones and adjusted the receiver. Before long, their voices came through loud and clear.

"Is she asleep?"

It was Leo's voice.

"She should be. She looked really tired today," Jessica answered.

"Then we…"

"Wait. Give it a little more time."

I listened with a smirk, and revenge kept twisting tighter under my ribs.

Good. Everything was going according to plan. Tomorrow, when the zombie outbreak hit, the sleazy pair would learn their good times were over.

Jessica knelt beside Leo, shaking him hard. "No. Leo!"I cracked the metal door open and dragged Leo's limp body into the apartment. He wasn't dead. He was only knocked unconscious from being tased. I still had other plans.Jessica stared at me in terror. "You're insane. You killed him!"I looked coldly at her, who stood frozen outside the door. "No, I didn't. He'd only been tased unconscious. I could only let one of you inside, so I chose Leo."I tossed a backpack to Jessica. Inside were a small knife, a bottle of water, and a piece of hardtack. My voice was completely flat. "This is what you get. Try to stay alive, if you can."Jessica took the backpack with shaking hands, despair flooding her eyes. She cried, "Chloe, please... We used to be best friends."I snorted. "Best friends? A friend doesn't sleep with my fiance or plan to kill me."The color drained from Jessica's face. She knew that I already knew everything."I-I can explain…" she stammered."You don't need to exp

Leo slammed his palm against the steel door like a madman. "Chloe! I know you're in there!"Earlier, after they dealt with Rex, Leo and Jessica scavenged tools from their place and broke their way out of their apartment. They took a hidden route through blind spots, stayed out of the zombies' sight, and stumbled up to my door as if they were out of options.Leo sobbed so hard he could barely breathe. His voice was hoarse and ragged. "Please! Open up. We're dying out here!"I watched through the peephole. Leo's cheeks were hollow, his eyes were bloodshot, and he looked so thin he could've passed for a skeleton.Jessica looked even worse. Her hair stuck out in wild tangles, her lips were split and bleeding, and she reeked of sweat. She screamed through her tears and thudded her fist against the door. "Chloe, it's me, Jessica! We're best friends! You can't just let us die!"Best friends? I almost laughed out loud.Leo screamed until his voice broke. "I was wrong! This was all my f

Leo approached the couch slowly. "Rex, I want to talk."Rex had been up since dawn, and the hunger had him even meaner. His eyes were bloodshot, and he looked like a cornered animal. He tightened his grip on the wrench and watched Leo. "About what? You and Jessica are trying to pull something again?"Leo raised both hands. "It's not a setup. I found a way out."Jessica nodded, her eyes lighting up.Rex snorted. "A way out? This place is crawling with zombies. Are you trying to get us killed?"Leo pointed at the wall. "There's a secret route. The building's vents run down to the underground garage. We can slip past the zombies."Rex frowned, trying to decide if Leo was telling the truth. "How do you know that?"Leo was good at lying. "I used to work here. I helped with maintenance. There's a vent route that runs down to the underground garage, and the zombies can't get in."It was a smart lie. He really had worked for the building's property management company for a few months,

Leo's voice was ragged. "There was nothing. Nothing at all! We already searched every corner!"Another three days passed, and Leo, Jessica, and Rex were all starving to the point of collapse. Rex became the de facto ruler of the tiny space, keeping everyone in line with his fists. He kicked Leo, who was curled up in the corner. "You useless pieces of trash! You couldn't even find a scrap of food."Leo curled in on himself in pain and didn't dare fight back. After three days without eating, his cheeks had hollowed out. His eyes were bloodshot, and he looked skeletal.Jessica was even worse off. Her lips were cracked and bleeding, her hair was tangled and filthy. She stank of sweat, and she looked wrecked.Jessica begged weakly. "Rex, please… Just give me a sip of water. Just one sip…"Rex shot her a vicious glare. "Shut up! The water is mine. If you want any, go outside and ask the zombies for it!"He was starving too, but his physical advantage still let him keep Leo and Jessica

The arguing from Leo's apartment kept getting louder and uglier.Leo and Jessica were already gaunt from hunger, faces drawn and eyes sunken. They would spend hours screaming at each other over a single sip of water.Jessica cried weakly, her voice hoarse. "You said you loved me! Now you won't even give me a sip of water!"Leo sounded just as wrecked, his lips split and bleeding. "I'm dying of thirst, too! Do you think I don't want to drink?"Jessica sounded desperate. "We should go out and find food!"Leo pointed at the window. "Go out? You want to get torn apart by those things? The whole area downstairs is crawling with zombies!"He was right. The whole building was already overrun, blood smeared along the hallways, and severed limbs scattered everywhere.Through the security feed, I saw at least 20 zombies roaming the hallway. Then the keypad on Leo's door started beeping. Someone was trying the code.Leo and Jessica went silent, staring at the door, tense and scared."Who

"Damn it! What the hell is going on out there?"Leo's roar came through the listening device.I kept chewing my steak, binoculars trained on the apartment across the street. The screams outside finally yanked Leo and Jessica fully awake. They leaned against the window and looked down. The street already looked like the apocalypse. Zombies shambled along the roadway, and severed limbs littered the pavement.A police cruiser tore past, its body smeared with blood and claw marks, before it slammed into a utility pole at the curb. The driver's door flew open, and an officer stumbled out. His uniform hung in tatters, and bite marks ringed his neck. A few seconds later, he was shambling with the rest."We're trapped! Those things are eating people!" Jessica cried, tears in her voice.Leo tried to stay calm, but the tremor in his voice gave him away. "Calm down! First, we grab food. Then we'll figure out how to get out of here."I watched them tear through drawers and cabinets for fo
