Chapter 2

Author: Summer Forest
I had barely hung up when the restaurant manager’s voice drifted over from the entrance.

“Dr. Levingston, your table is ready. Please come this way.”

The moment I heard “Dr. Levingston,” I looked up on instinct.

I immediately spotted Audrey, and Ryan was with her.

The two of them entered side by side.

Audrey had taken off her white coat. The sleeves of her white button-down shirt were rolled up to her forearms, and the weariness on her face was impossible to miss.

Ryan turned toward her as they walked, saying something softly.

Whatever it was, it brought a smile to Audrey’s face.

The sight left a heavy ache in my chest.

Whenever Audrey came home from work, I would pull her into conversation, eager to tell her every interesting thing that happened during my day.

But she had always seemed uninterested. A smile was out of the question, and even a simple “mm-hmm” felt like she was humoring me.

I kept making excuses for her. I told myself she was exhausted from work and simply did not have the energy to respond.

Only then did I realize that even when she was tired, she could still smile.

She just never smiled at me.

“Luke?”

Ryan was the first to spot me. He strode over with a perfectly measured smile.

“What are you doing here all by yourself?”

I did not respond, but he began explaining himself anyway.

“There was a major accident today, and we had so many injured patients. Audrey and I have been working nonstop since this afternoon. We’ve just finished our last surgery, and we’re practically starving.

“Audrey suddenly remembered that this place served your favorite pan-seared cod. She insisted on bringing me here, saying she’d pack some up for you after dinner.”

When he finished, he turned to Audrey and smiled sweetly.

“Audrey really loves you. She’s always thinking about you.

“I’m honestly jealous. I wish I had someone who loved me this much.”

She really loved me?

Would someone who truly loved me forget our wedding anniversary?

Would someone who truly loved me come to such a romantic place this late at night with another man?

Would someone who truly loved me travel more than three hundred miles to perform surgery on someone else’s aunt, yet refuse to fight for Dad’s last chance at survival?

I looked up at Ryan. My voice rang cold.

“Whether she loves me or not has nothing to do with you.”

Ryan’s smile faded, little by little, and he became visibly flustered.

“I’m sorry… Did I say something wrong? I really only meant well…”

His voice grew softer, and his eyes even turned misty.

I had not said a single harsh word.

Then, Audrey moved in front of Ryan, putting herself between us.

That protective gesture made my eyes sting.

“Luke, you know he didn’t mean anything by it. Why are you being so harsh with him?”

Her voice was calm, but anger simmered beneath it.

“There were so many injured patients today, and everyone was giving everything they had. As the nurse manager, he’s been working all day without even having time to eat. Don’t be unreasonable.”

The people around us immediately started taking their side.

“Doctors and nurses really do have it tough…”

“She just finished surgery and is still thinking about bringing her husband dinner. What more do you want from her?”

“Some men are way too controlling. That kind of toxic masculinity is honestly scary.”

Fine. They were all the good ones. I was the only villain.

I did not want to argue any longer, so I turned and walked away.

But as I passed Audrey, she reached out and grabbed my wrist.

The familiar warmth of her touch made me hesitate for just a second.

Then, her voice cut through it.

“Apologize to Ryan first.”

For a moment, I thought I had misheard her.

“Excuse me?”

“You embarrassed him in public. Apologize.”

I looked at Ryan. He stood behind Audrey with reddened eyes, looking as helpless as a startled fawn.

Audrey remained between us. She stared at me like I was the enemy.

I chuckled.

“Tell me, Audrey. What exactly was wrong with what I said? What happens between a husband and wife has nothing to do with him. He’s just a coworker.”

I put extra emphasis on the words “just a coworker”.

Audrey spluttered. For once, she had no answer.

I pulled my hand free and walked out of the restaurant without looking back.

The cold night air washed over me, carrying away the resentment I had been holding inside.

I finally realized that the moment I took that step, nothing could keep me trapped anymore.

When I returned home, I printed out the divorce agreement.

By next Saturday, our marriage would be over.

I looked at Audrey, my voice calm and steady.“From the day Dad died, we were never meant to have a future together.”Audrey remained rooted to the spot. After a long while, she suddenly laughed. It was bitter and full of defeat, like a gambler who had finally lost everything.“I understand.” She nodded, her voice hoarse.“Luke, I won’t bother you anymore.”With that, she turned and left. Her pace was slow, but she never looked back.I stayed where I was, watching her figure gradually disappear into the glow at the end of the corridor.I felt neither relief nor sadness, only a quiet, almost imperceptible sense of peace, like a book that had finally reached its final page.Five years later, Evan and I sat by the Selvara River in Piremont, Faronne, having drinks together. The years had sharpened him into an accomplished professional. He had become one of the most renowned lawyers in the industry, carrying an air of precision, confidence, and decisiveness in everything he did

Mom eventually pulled through. With the international team of specialists revising her treatment plan, she was successfully moved out of the ICU a week later. The day I received the news, I sat on the bench outside her room and cried for a long time, my face buried in my hands. All the fear, anxiety, and helplessness I had been carrying over these past few days finally found an outlet.“Luke.”Melanie handed me a tissue and crouched down in front of me, looking unusually flustered.“Your mom’s fine now. Why are you still crying?”I took the tissue and wiped my eyes, though they were still red.“Thank you, Melanie. You’re truly a kind person.”Without her, I honestly did not know how I would have made it through those days.Melanie scratched her head awkwardly and looked away.“Actually, I didn’t do all this just because I’m kind.”I stared at her, confused. She met my eyes, her expression serious, open, and completely sincere.“I did it because I like you.”I froze, unab

I called the police, and Ryan was taken away. The consequences awaiting him went far beyond losing his job.He would have to answer for deliberately provoking a post-surgery patient and causing her condition to worsen, along with the investigation into the previous postoperative bleeding incident. But I no longer had the time or the desire to care about what happened to him.Mom’s condition had suddenly taken a turn for the worse.Outside the ICU, the doctors handed me critical condition notices again and again.I went two full days without sleep, standing outside the glass and watching Mom lie there with tubes running through her body.Every change in the numbers on the monitor felt like a dull blade carving away at my nerves, bit by bit.Audrey stayed at the hospital the entire time as well. She slept even less than I did, dark circles forming beneath her eyes. But when I looked at her, I felt no gratitude whatsoever, only a deep, lingering disgust that I could not shake.I

“The surgery was a success. Her condition shouldn’t have deteriorated so suddenly.”The doctor looked genuinely perplexed.“Unless… something caused her severe emotional distress.”My heart sank.“Emotional distress?”He nodded.“After surgery, patients need to avoid intense emotional stress, especially when their heart and blood pressure are still unstable. Think carefully. Did anything out of the ordinary happen today?”Out of the ordinary?Mom had only just come out of surgery. Aside from the medical staff and a few family members, no one had been in contact with her. Then, it hit me.I looked up abruptly.“Check the security cameras.”Half an hour later, we were in the surveillance room reviewing the footage. The corridor outside Mom’s room bustled with activity. Nurses moved in and out carrying trays. Then, at 3:20 p.m., a figure appeared on the screen. It was Ryan.My breath caught, and I instinctively looked at Audrey. She stood just behind me. The glow from the

After that call, I rushed back to my hometown overnight. At the hospital, Mom was still receiving emergency treatment. The doctor stood in the corridor, his expression grave.“The patient is in critical condition and requires immediate surgery. Unfortunately, this hospital doesn’t have the necessary facilities. We recommend transferring her to another hospital as soon as possible.”My blood ran cold.It was as if I had been thrown back three years.Back then, another doctor had told me the same thing as Dad lay in his hospital bed.I lost Dad then. Was I going to lose Mom too?I swayed where I stood, on the verge of collapsing.Just then, Audrey arrived.“I’ll do it.”Everyone froze.Recognition flashed across the doctor’s face.“You’re… Dr. Audrey Levingston?”Audrey gave a brief nod.“Let me see her chart.”Within minutes, she had made her assessment.“The surgery can be done. Prepare everything immediately. I’ll perform it myself.”The surgery lasted a full eight ho

Over the next few days, Audrey followed me everywhere I went.We stayed at the same hotels, visited the same attractions, and even ate at the same restaurants.I knew the best way to deal with her was to ignore her, so I did just that. I focused on enjoying the scenery, taking my photos, and treating her as if she were invisible. But eventually, Melanie could not stand it anymore.“Miss Ex.” She dropped her spoon onto the table in the restaurant. “Do you have a stalking problem?”Audrey did not even look up. She calmly picked up a chicken wing and reached across the table to place it on my plate. The gesture was as natural as it had always been, as if our marriage had never ended.“I’m here spending time with my husband,” Audrey said. “How does that count as stalking?”Melanie smiled sweetly, but there was no trace of amusement in her eyes.“Let me correct you again. He’s your ex-husband, not your husband.”The tension in the air was thick enough to cut.I rubbed my temple
