Chapter 3

Author: Summer Forest
I stayed up all night and silently packed my things.

Keeping myself busy was the only way I could ignore the hollow ache in my chest.

Just before sunrise, I dug out my old photography equipment from the storage room. It had been untouched for years and had gathered dust.

I pressed the power button, and the screen flickered to life.

My eyes suddenly burned.

Thankfully, it still worked. I was not too late.

I was carrying the camera back into the living room when my phone rang.

It was the real estate agent.

“Mr. Gatlin, regarding the house you and your wife toured last week, I’ve already spoken with the owner. If there are no issues, you can sign the contract next weekend.”

I froze.

I had almost forgotten about it.

Not long ago, Audrey had been promoted and received a raise.

She said our current place was too small and that we should move somewhere bigger.

It had been her idea.

But from beginning to end, I handled everything: touring houses, choosing a place, contacting agents, comparing layouts, and working out the mortgage.

She only came with me once.

That day, I had excitedly shown her what would become our bedroom and asked what kind of design she liked.

Without even looking up from her phone, she had casually said, “Looks good. You decide.”

I caught a clear glimpse of her screen. She was messaging Ryan on WhatsApp.

Before we had even finished the house tour, Ryan called, and she left.

Thinking back on it, I calmly said to the agent, “Forget about the house. I don’t want it anymore.”

“What? But why? Mrs. Gatlin seemed pretty happy with it.”

I looked at the camera in my hands and gave a quiet laugh.

“Because we’re getting divorced.”

The line went completely silent.

I ended the call.

By the time I finished packing, it was already midday.

I took the divorce agreement with me and drove to the hospital.

Five years of marriage were brought to an end by a few thin sheets of paper.

They felt almost laughably light in my hand.

It was lunchtime. I figured Audrey would be in her office, so I went straight there and knocked.

Instead, Ryan opened the door.

A flicker of surprise crossed his face.

“Luke?”

I glanced past him, looking for Audrey.

He shifted sideways to block my view and lowered his voice.

“Audrey had a rough night. She spent the whole morning seeing patients, and she just fell asleep. What do you need?”

I studied him.

His hair was tousled, his clothes were a little wrinkled, and Audrey’s office stood behind him.

A wave of nausea churned in my stomach.

I tightened my grip on the folder and forced myself to look away.

“I need her to sign something.”

Ryan glanced down at the folder in my hand and smiled.

“Audrey’s exhausted. She finally managed to get some rest, so I’d rather not wake her. Just give it to me, and I’ll pass it along when she wakes up.”

I was about to refuse, but then I thought better of it.

The last thing I wanted was to see Audrey again, even for a second.

So, I handed the folder over and said, “Thanks. I’ll leave it to you.”

Then, I turned and walked away.

The scene from moments ago kept replaying in my mind.

Ryan was in her office, taking a lunch break with her. He had been so at ease and familiar that it seemed like the most natural thing in the world.

The nausea in my stomach only got worse.

I rushed into the restroom and dry heaved over the sink for a long time, but nothing came up.

I splashed my face with cold water. Just as I stepped out, a sharp, cramping pain suddenly tore through my abdomen.

My vision went black, and I collapsed.

I woke to the smell of disinfectant.

A nurse noticed I was awake and let out a sigh of relief.

“Sir, you’re finally awake.”

I pushed myself upright, my head still spinning.

“What happened?”

The nurse handed me the test results, her expression grave.

“Sir, the results are in. You have a post-vasectomy infection. You’re still so young. Why did you decide to get one?”

I looked at Audrey, my voice calm and steady.“From the day Dad died, we were never meant to have a future together.”Audrey remained rooted to the spot. After a long while, she suddenly laughed. It was bitter and full of defeat, like a gambler who had finally lost everything.“I understand.” She nodded, her voice hoarse.“Luke, I won’t bother you anymore.”With that, she turned and left. Her pace was slow, but she never looked back.I stayed where I was, watching her figure gradually disappear into the glow at the end of the corridor.I felt neither relief nor sadness, only a quiet, almost imperceptible sense of peace, like a book that had finally reached its final page.Five years later, Evan and I sat by the Selvara River in Piremont, Faronne, having drinks together. The years had sharpened him into an accomplished professional. He had become one of the most renowned lawyers in the industry, carrying an air of precision, confidence, and decisiveness in everything he did

Mom eventually pulled through. With the international team of specialists revising her treatment plan, she was successfully moved out of the ICU a week later. The day I received the news, I sat on the bench outside her room and cried for a long time, my face buried in my hands. All the fear, anxiety, and helplessness I had been carrying over these past few days finally found an outlet.“Luke.”Melanie handed me a tissue and crouched down in front of me, looking unusually flustered.“Your mom’s fine now. Why are you still crying?”I took the tissue and wiped my eyes, though they were still red.“Thank you, Melanie. You’re truly a kind person.”Without her, I honestly did not know how I would have made it through those days.Melanie scratched her head awkwardly and looked away.“Actually, I didn’t do all this just because I’m kind.”I stared at her, confused. She met my eyes, her expression serious, open, and completely sincere.“I did it because I like you.”I froze, unab

I called the police, and Ryan was taken away. The consequences awaiting him went far beyond losing his job.He would have to answer for deliberately provoking a post-surgery patient and causing her condition to worsen, along with the investigation into the previous postoperative bleeding incident. But I no longer had the time or the desire to care about what happened to him.Mom’s condition had suddenly taken a turn for the worse.Outside the ICU, the doctors handed me critical condition notices again and again.I went two full days without sleep, standing outside the glass and watching Mom lie there with tubes running through her body.Every change in the numbers on the monitor felt like a dull blade carving away at my nerves, bit by bit.Audrey stayed at the hospital the entire time as well. She slept even less than I did, dark circles forming beneath her eyes. But when I looked at her, I felt no gratitude whatsoever, only a deep, lingering disgust that I could not shake.I

“The surgery was a success. Her condition shouldn’t have deteriorated so suddenly.”The doctor looked genuinely perplexed.“Unless… something caused her severe emotional distress.”My heart sank.“Emotional distress?”He nodded.“After surgery, patients need to avoid intense emotional stress, especially when their heart and blood pressure are still unstable. Think carefully. Did anything out of the ordinary happen today?”Out of the ordinary?Mom had only just come out of surgery. Aside from the medical staff and a few family members, no one had been in contact with her. Then, it hit me.I looked up abruptly.“Check the security cameras.”Half an hour later, we were in the surveillance room reviewing the footage. The corridor outside Mom’s room bustled with activity. Nurses moved in and out carrying trays. Then, at 3:20 p.m., a figure appeared on the screen. It was Ryan.My breath caught, and I instinctively looked at Audrey. She stood just behind me. The glow from the

After that call, I rushed back to my hometown overnight. At the hospital, Mom was still receiving emergency treatment. The doctor stood in the corridor, his expression grave.“The patient is in critical condition and requires immediate surgery. Unfortunately, this hospital doesn’t have the necessary facilities. We recommend transferring her to another hospital as soon as possible.”My blood ran cold.It was as if I had been thrown back three years.Back then, another doctor had told me the same thing as Dad lay in his hospital bed.I lost Dad then. Was I going to lose Mom too?I swayed where I stood, on the verge of collapsing.Just then, Audrey arrived.“I’ll do it.”Everyone froze.Recognition flashed across the doctor’s face.“You’re… Dr. Audrey Levingston?”Audrey gave a brief nod.“Let me see her chart.”Within minutes, she had made her assessment.“The surgery can be done. Prepare everything immediately. I’ll perform it myself.”The surgery lasted a full eight ho

Over the next few days, Audrey followed me everywhere I went.We stayed at the same hotels, visited the same attractions, and even ate at the same restaurants.I knew the best way to deal with her was to ignore her, so I did just that. I focused on enjoying the scenery, taking my photos, and treating her as if she were invisible. But eventually, Melanie could not stand it anymore.“Miss Ex.” She dropped her spoon onto the table in the restaurant. “Do you have a stalking problem?”Audrey did not even look up. She calmly picked up a chicken wing and reached across the table to place it on my plate. The gesture was as natural as it had always been, as if our marriage had never ended.“I’m here spending time with my husband,” Audrey said. “How does that count as stalking?”Melanie smiled sweetly, but there was no trace of amusement in her eyes.“Let me correct you again. He’s your ex-husband, not your husband.”The tension in the air was thick enough to cut.I rubbed my temple
