Chapter 2

Author: Tipsy Breeze
The screen shattered, cutting off the call.

"Eric, have you lost your mind?"

Whitney dropped into a crouch and picked up her phone, frantically wiping at the cracked screen.

"You owe me a new phone!"

"You're not getting one!" I pointed to the door. "Get out and go find your precious Craig, because I'm done with this whole carsick act!"

Whitney stayed, sinking onto the couch and bursting into tears. She sobbed as though I was the one who owed her an apology.

Her best friend, Janet Maxwell, walked in just then. The second she saw Whitney crying, she rushed over and shoved me.

"What's wrong with you? You know how sick Whitney gets, and this is how you treat her?"

I stared at her. "Sick? She was Craig's navigator, and she kept going with two broken ribs!"

Janet froze, then quickly looked away.

"That was years ago!

"She was seriously hurt in that crash, and she's still dealing with the damage! That's why she gets carsick now!

"You should be supporting her, and instead you're throwing the worst experience of her life in her face. How can you be so cruel?"

Whitney rested her head on Janet's shoulder and nodded through her tears.

"Eric, I didn't want to tell you, but that accident damaged my vestibular nerve. I really can't handle fast cars anymore. I kept it from you because I was scared you'd think less of me."

She raised her head and looked at me through her tears.

"Craig doesn't know about my condition. That's the only reason he called, and I wasn't going to meet him anyway."

I studied her tearful face. For three years, she gave me that same pleading look every time I brought up racing, and every time, I believed her.

When I said nothing, Whitney hurriedly pulled out her phone and blocked Craig's number right in front of me.

"Honey, I swear I'll never get in a race car again. I'll never see him again, either. You're the only one I love. Can't we just put this behind us?"

I looked at her red-rimmed eyes and the hand she held up as she made her promise. Finally, I sighed.

"Alright."

I thought that would be the end of it.

The next afternoon, I told Whitney I needed to work late and left the house early. I took an ordinary sedan and parked across from the entrance to our neighborhood.

At 8 p.m., Whitney walked out wearing a fitted black outfit and a baseball cap. There was a bounce in her step, with none of the weakness she always complained about.

She got into an Uber, and I pulled out after it. We headed toward an old mountain road on the outskirts of town, a popular spot for illegal street races.

The Uber stopped at the base of the mountain, near a modified red Nissan GT-R. As Whitney got out, the GT-R's window rolled down, revealing Craig behind the wheel.

She hurried over and slid into the passenger seat. I parked in the shadows and watched.

The engine roared, and the GT-R shot up the winding road. Its tires squealed as Craig drifted through the curves at a reckless speed.

Whitney sat beside him without the slightest sign of nausea. As they passed under the streetlights, I caught glimpses of her laughing, her face bright with excitement.

I pulled out my phone and recorded everything.

An hour later, the GT-R returned to the base of the mountain. Whitney got out, and Craig handed her a bottle of water.

She tipped her head back for a sip while he reached over and casually ruffled her hair. She didn't pull away.

I got out of my car and strode toward them.

"Born with a balance disorder, huh? What happened to that damaged vestibular nerve?"

My voice cut through the night, and Whitney spun around. The bottle slipped from her hand.

"Eric?" she sputtered. "You followed me?"

Craig leaned against his car door and looked me up and down.

My company's official account posted a ten-minute video. There were no tearful appeals or dramatic speeches, just the evidence. It opened with footage of Whitney navigating for Craig on the mountain road, cut together with clips of her acting carsick around me.Next came the full recording of her demanding two million dollars in exchange for keeping those fake contracts to herself. Then came footage of Craig trying to ram my car during the race, followed by unedited security footage of him beating Whitney afterward. The video ended with a copy of the police report confirming an investigation into blackmail and assault.Within minutes, the video was everywhere, and the comments turned against them.[Okay, I did not see that coming.][She spent years pretending to get carsick, then tried to blackmail her husband for two million dollars? That's disgusting.][Craig beats women? I just sent him money! Give it back!]Angry viewers flooded Craig's livestream. He went pale as insults

I leaned against my car and watched the farce without a flicker of sympathy.Whitney crawled over and clung to my legs, her face bruised and swollen. "Eric, help me! I'm sorry. I know I was wrong! I don't want a divorce! I promise I'll be a good wife. Please, just help me!"I kicked her away. "Get off me. You disgust me." I opened the door and got behind the wheel. "You made your choice. Now live with it."I started the engine and drove away, its roar drowning out the commotion. In the rearview mirror, Craig was still hitting and kicking her.As soon as I got home, I had someone throw out all her belongings. I changed the locks and cleared the house of every trace of her.The next day, I filed the divorce papers. Whitney didn't show up, and I heard she was in the hospital with three broken ribs from the beating. How ironic. Years ago, she kept navigating for Craig with two broken ribs. This time, he broke three of them himself.I thought it was over, but Craig apparent

Whitney looked up at me and spat, "Eric, you set me up! You knew how to race all along, and you pretended you didn't just to trick me!" I laughed. "I tricked you? You spent three years pretending to get carsick, then tried to blackmail me with fake contracts."I crouched in front of her and met her eyes. "Those contracts you found in the safe? I put them there for you to find, and they prove absolutely nothing. Go ahead and report me. Let's see which one of us gets arrested."Her eyes widened. "You knew I was faking it? All three years?""That's right." I stood. "Watching you make a fool of yourself was pretty entertaining.""Don't get too cocky, Eric!" Craig shouted. "This isn't over just because we lost! You win one race and think you're somebody? I'm a professional. My team's about to qualify for the national league!"I gave him a pitying look. "Then I guess nobody told you your biggest sponsor just pulled out."Craig froze. "You're lying."I took out my phone and playe

As his bumper struck, I tapped the brakes and nudged the steering wheel, using the impact to send the McLaren into a controlled drift. I held the slide and carried my momentum into the next turn.Behind me, Craig's GT-R swerved violently and lost speed. Whitney screamed from the passenger seat. "Craig, watch out!"Her scream left me cold. "This is the guy you're so proud of, Whitney? He can't even ram someone without screwing it up."By the start of the third and final lap, I was half a lap ahead. All I needed was a clean finish, but winning wasn't enough anymore.I wanted to break them both. With just over half a mile to the finish line, I pulled over and killed the engine. The grandstands went quiet as everyone tried to figure out what I was doing.A few minutes later, Craig's GT-R came roaring up behind me. He spotted my car at the edge of the track, and his surprise turned to excitement."His car broke down! We're gonna win!" Whitney shouted. The GT-R surged toward the fi

A few racing veterans in the crowd gasped."Look at all that carbon fiber!""Listen to that engine! It's got to be making over a thousand horsepower!"Craig's smile slipped, but he quickly recovered. "Nice car. Shame about the loser driving it."Whitney walked over and eyed me coldly. "How much did you spend renting that thing just to impress us? Do you even have the two million?"I pulled on my helmet without looking at her. "Get in the car. I'll show you both what real speed looks like."Craig's red GT-R lined up beside my black McLaren. From his passenger seat, Whitney flipped me off through the window. The starting lights turned green, and both cars shot off the line. Craig got a better launch and reached the first turn ahead of me.I stayed close to his rear bumper, in no hurry to pass. Over our open radio channel, his voice crackled through my headset."Keeping up back there, Mr. Schmidt? We're just warming up. Don't get scared on me."Whitney chimed in. "Lose him on th

Craig doubled over laughing, as though I had just told the best joke of his life. "Beat you? Has all this finally gone to your head? You're a rich guy with a hobby. You really think you can take on a professional?"Whitney looked at me like I was an idiot. "Stop trying to prove something, Eric. People die doing this. Just get the money and quit wasting our time."I ignored them. "Three days from now at Westbrook International Speedway. Three laps. You win, I give you two million and sign the divorce papers on the spot. You lose, Whitney leaves with nothing and hands over those fake contracts."Craig stopped laughing and narrowed his eyes. "You're on. Hope you've got good life insurance. Don't say I didn't warn you."He put his arm around Whitney and swaggered out with her. Janet glared at me, then hurried after them.As the employees drifted back to work, my assistant, Vince Dixon, approached. "Mr. Schmidt, are you really going to race him?
