Chapter 4

Author: Twin Elm
Dressed in a custom black tuxedo, I stood in the center of the ballroom, handling an interview.

A reporter asked, "Mr. Pearce, there have been plenty of rumors circulating about your marriage lately. What are your thoughts?"

I smiled. "Today's the grand opening of the complex. Let's talk about business rather than my marriage life."

"But rumors suggest you and Ms. Henderson are facing a marital crisis—"

"A marriage alliance…" I calmly interrupted. "...prioritizes mutual profitability. Ms. Henderson and I have always cooperated seamlessly on a corporate level."

The moment the words left my mouth, a sudden commotion broke out near the doors of the ballroom.

Valerie was here, with Archie beside her. He was dressed in a white suit—an out-of-season designer piece I had tossed into the clothing recycling bin last month, now clearly tailored down to fit his frame.

What stood out most aggressively was the limited-edition Patek Philippe watch on his wrist. It was a custom Silverbrook piece Dad had given to me as a wedding present, valued at seven figures.

As I stared at the shameless pair, the rage in my gaze nearly erupted.

The reporters immediately redirected their lenses.

"Ms. Henderson! Who is this gentleman?"

"Ms. Henderson, could you introduce the man accompanying you tonight?"

"Does Mr. Pearce know you brought your male personal assistant to the gala today?"

Valerie's expression was stiff as she attempted to block the cameras. "This is my personal assistant. He's here tonight just to help—"

"Valerie," Archie suddenly spoke up in a soft yet clear voice. "Don't put yourself in a difficult place. I'll explain."

He took a step forward and flashed the cameras a perfect smile.

"Hello, everyone, I'm Archie Carter. I know I shouldn't be here tonight, but Valerie mentioned she needed someone to look after her, so I…"

He paused, and his eyes reddened, right on cue. "I just wanted to fulfill my duties. Mr. Pearce is always so buried in work that he doesn't have the time to look after Valerie. It's only right that I step in to help take care of her."

A dead silence fell over the ballroom.

Every single pair of eyes flicked back and forth between me, Valerie, and Archie, while I remained standing in place, wearing the same smile from earlier.

Brilliant. The stage was officially set.

I marched up the main stage and picked up the microphone. Smiling, I spoke into it, and my voice projected through the ballroom via the loudspeakers.

"It seems everyone here has tuned into the trending topics. That's perfect. I'd like to take today's chance to address a few matters."

The giant screen lit up to show a line of bold, simple text.

"It's time to bring the curtains down on some performances."

The ballroom fell silent as I calmly continued, "Three years ago, a strategic business partnership between the Pearce and Henderson Groups brought about the marriage alliance between Ms. Henderson and me.

"For the past three years, our partnership has been smooth, and our projects have progressed seamlessly. It was supposed to be the textbook definition of a successful marriage alliance."

I paused for a beat and glanced at Valerie, whose face had turned pale below the stage.

"Unfortunately, some people got too caught up in the act and forgot that this was strictly a partnership."

"Kieran!"

Valerie attempted to charge toward the stage, but the security team immediately stepped forward to block her path.

Raising my voice, I continued, "So today, I'm making three official announcements.

"First, my marriage to Ms. Henderson is terminated, effective immediately. The divorce papers were drafted, and I wish you and Mr. Carter a happily ever after, Ms. Henderson."

The ballroom erupted in an uproar.

"Second, every partnership project between Pearce Group and Henderson Group is suspended. Contractual termination penalties will be settled according to the contracts, and our legal team will follow up with the transition."

The crowd completely melted down.

"Third…"

I looked toward the entrance of the ballroom, just as the heavy doors swung open.

Three years ago, Stacey had just graduated and had recently joined her family business. She had very little leverage or authority. But to be honest, I had never taken her feelings seriously back then. Admirers were always hovering around me, and I regarded all of them with the same casual indifference. To me, Stacey's deep affection seemed just like another attempt to court my favor.Even after marrying Valerie through a marriage alliance, I kept a massive social circle. Everyone assumed I was incapable of changing my ways and labeled me as vain and a womanizer. Yet Stacey never once backed down because of it.Over all these years, she had cleared all the obstacles the Henderson family threw in my way before I could even notice. It took me a long time to realize that her actions were not born out of a lowly attempt to win my favor. It was so that one day, she could help me break free from the Henderson family's chains and openly stand by my side. So, I smiled, nodded, and took he

Archie sat on the floor, throwing a full-blown tantrum while wailing, "I'm innocent! Kieran is the one refusing to give me a way out!"By the time the officers cuffed his hands behind his back and dragged him away, one of his leather shoes had flown completely off.Internet users in the comment section nearly lost their minds with laughter."Oh, wow. Isn't this the poor little assistant who earns 6,000 dollars a month? How could he have three property deeds?""I guess he raked in millions of dollars from Internet users with the innocent teenage boy act. Now he's gotta cough it all up and pay back with interest. This is so satisfying."Before I could finish reading through the top comments on the live video, a notification from the legal team was pinned to the top of the company group chat."Valerie Henderson, Archie Carter, Tristan Pearce, and Harold Fletcher are formally placed under criminal detention. Every bank account tied to the case was frozen, and the case files were offi

When I raised my hand and waved, Stacey immediately hit play on an audio player. A phone call between Valerie's executive assistant and Archie rang out clearly across the bridge."Archie, all you have to do is pretend you're going to jump. We'll handle everything else afterward, and once it's done, you'll get paid."Remember. Cry hard, look miserable, and lean over the railing as far as you can. We've arranged for reporters, and if your act is convincing enough, the pressure of public opinion will surely force Kieran to give in."Then came Archie's greedy and smug voice."Don't worry. I'll give you a perfect performance! But remember the one million dollars we agreed on. You promised that once this succeeds, I'll be promoted to the CEO's executive assistant with a six-figure salary. Don't go back on your word."The media went absolutely wild and pressed so hard against the police barricades that they almost knocked them over. The sound of camera shutters nearly drowned out the rus

I stared at the screen and tightened my grip around the tablet until the metal edge dug into my fingers."Archie isn't going to jump. This is just another act, and he couldn't even be bothered to come up with a new script," Stacey remarked and coldly tapped the bridge location tag on the screen."I know."I slammed the tablet shut. My phone buzzed so intensely with push notifications that it numbed my hand. The top 20 most viral hashtags were variations of #KieranPearceDrivesLoverToSuicide."But public opinion has exploded. If he succeeds in riding this wave of viral sympathy, Pearce Group will lose half of our business partners by the end of the day.""What's your plan?" Stacey asked.I grabbed my coat and headed out the door. "We beat them at their own game. I've been preparing for this."Let's head to the bridge to build him a grander stage for his act. Today's the day we clear all the outstanding debts."…As we sped toward Oakhaven Grand Bridge, Valerie called. Her furio

"What nonsense are you talking about?" Tristan roared. "Now I see, you're just a lunatic!"I looked at him and suddenly smiled. Then, slowly rising from my seat, I said, "Uncle Tristan, are you getting this agitated because you care about me, or is it because… you were the one who leaked all these details?"A dead silence fell over the conference room.Tristan's expression shifted. "Don't make accusations you can't prove! Watch it, or I'll sue you!""You'll sue me?"I unlocked my tablet and cast the screen to the projector, showing a series of bank statements.Over the past week, Tristan's personal account transferred a total of 3 million dollars to three media marketing firms. The exact timestamp of the transfers was the day before the leaks dropped.Next came his personal chat logs with a senior board member, Harold Fletcher. It clearly documented how Tristan had leaked corporate project proposals and split profits with Harold.Besides, the "insider" who had leaked my blurre

Tristan shifted his tone and finally revealed his true colors."What I mean is that, judging from how badly the stock price is plummeting right now, quite a few board members are wondering if it's time we re-evaluate the chairmanship of this company…""Let's vote," I said, refusing to waste another breath on his nonsense. "This is a motion to remove Valerie Henderson from all positions within Pearce Group, and I'll assume the role of the acting chairman."The voting concluded with seven votes in favor, three against, and one abstention."Motion passed. Meeting adjourned," I announced.Livid, Tristan wouldn't stop shouting about unfairness through the line. But I didn't bother to respond and immediately hung up the call.Just then, Watson knocked and stepped into the office. "Mr. Pearce, Archie just uploaded a public apology video."In the video, Archie's eyes were slightly red. Tears welled up in his eyes for a long time, but he fought them back and refused to let them fall."I
