Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: October Fate
The back room was cold and damp. Having not yet fully recovered from his gunshot wound, Caelan passed out after kneeling for merely three hours. By midnight, he developed a high fever.

In his feverish delirium, he seemed to have traveled back to when he was 13. After his parents had died in a car accident, his relatives who had doted on him began treating him like a burden no one wanted to take in. None of them wanted to raise him, yet every one of them wanted a piece of the inheritance his parents had left behind.

That was until Misty—aged 23—entered the picture. Before the solemn funeral hall, her waist-length black hair complemented the cold, haughty look in her eyes, fitting for the first heiress of Portside. Yet, when she spoke to Caelan, her voice was extraordinarily gentle. "Don't be afraid. No one will ever dare to pick on you again. I'll always protect you!"

"You're lying…" Tears slid down from the corners of Caelan's tightly shut eyes. His pale, handsome face flushed as he murmured in his sleep, "You won't... protect me ever again..."

As soon as the words left his lips, the woman beside him, who had reached out to wipe away his tears, froze. After a long silence, she let out a soft sigh, turned around, and left.

When he came to, two days had passed. His wound had been restitched, his clothes had been changed into clean pajamas, and even his body felt remarkably clean and dry.

The commenters were quick to give credit.

[Misty has been doing pretty well these past two days. Not only did she find the best doctor to give Caelan cosmetic stitches, but she also stayed by his bedside, wiping away his sweat and helping bring his fever down.]

[Tears welled up in her eyes when she saw Caelan's wounds... Can't he forgive her?]

[This is so sweet! Misty just canceled a multi-million-dollar project meeting to rush back home as soon as she heard Caelan came to.]

After hearing the click of high heels coming from downstairs, Caelan's heart stirred. Without a second thought, he got out of bed and hurried toward it.

When he made his way down the stairs, the front door of the villa swung open. Caelan instinctively smiled as he went to greet her. "Misty, you're home!"

The very next second, however, he was met with Misty's ice-cold gaze. A shiver ran down his spine, and his steps ground to a halt.

Misty refused to let him escape, though. She grasped his arm and gritted out, "Caelan Hanson, you used my name to pressure Portside Press Holdings into firing Ezra. You drove him to an emotional breakdown, and while he was distracted crossing the street, he got into an accident. How dare you still call me by my name!"

Caelan blanched and shook his head frantically. "I didn't—"

Misty seemed to have anticipated his denial. "Deny it all you want. Ezra's colleague literally heard you threatening the Portside Press Holdings' chief editor over the phone with his own ears! You're the only person in this entire city who hates Ezra enough to sabotage him out of jealousy. If you didn't do it, are you trying to tell me that Ezra reported himself and threw away the dream job he worked so hard to land?"

Caelan felt as though a bolt of lightning had struck him out of the blue. Misty had once again blamed him without rhyme or reason. The anger and resentment he had bottled up in his heart finally overflowed.

He stubbornly lowered his gaze and met Misty's eyes, his tone laced with sarcasm. "Knowing me, if I were behind this, Ezra would've been beaten black and blue and chased out of Portside the day he shamelessly latched onto you! I told you, I didn't do it!" He trembled with anger, his fingernails digging so deeply into his palms that they nearly drew blood.

Misty eyed him skeptically for a few seconds. However, a heartbeat later, she received a voice message from Ezra. His voice sounded weak as he said, "Misty, I don't blame Caelan. He's just throwing a tantrum because he feels insecure... I guess it's my fault, too.

"If I'd listened and agreed to resign the first time Caelan asked me privately, he wouldn't have resorted to such extreme measures now... Besides, my leg's just fractured. It's not a big deal." His tone was innocent, yet every single word he said fanned the flames.

Misty's expression darkened in an instant. "Ezra has been hurt by you time and time again, yet he's still kindhearted enough to make excuses for you. You, on the other hand, never know how to reflect on your actions or apologize. I'm so disappointed in you. Since your recklessness has cost Ezra the job he loved most, it's only fair that you get a taste of what it feels like to lose something precious, too!"

She nodded at her bodyguard, who immediately headed toward Caelan's room. Caelan's heart sank bit by bit until he saw the bodyguard emerge with a box filled with the belongings of his late parents, Christian Hanson and Chloe Truman. He was dumbstruck.

"Burn it," Misty ordered. She'd only said two words, yet they shattered Caelan's heart completely.

"No!" Caelan lost all composure. He screamed at the top of his lungs and tried to lunge forward to protect the last memories of his parents left in this world, but the other bodyguards held him back firmly.

A month later, Caelan was lying on the beach, soaking up the sun. Vivian, who was beside him, was applying sunscreen to his skin. Her expression was particularly sour as she glared at Misty, who was standing not far away, and gritted her teeth. "That shameless old hag's always attempting to steal my husband and play the mistress!"Caelan was already used to her endless grumbling. He rolled over with his eyes closed and responded half-heartedly, "You're my wife, and you're the one with the legal title. Why are you bothering yourself with her?'His words instantly soothed Vivian's ruffled feathers. She happily trotted off to get him some freshly sliced fruit. The very next second, he received another message from Misty. "There's a gala at the hotel tonight. I brought a set of cufflinks that go perfectly with the suit you had custom-made a few days ago."Caelan didn't respond. He merely rose to his feet and walked straight into the hotel. Not long after he returned to his suite,

The wedding march gradually began to play inside the sacred, solemn walls of the ancient castle. Caelan stood at the far end of the red carpet, smiling as he watched Vivian walk toward him in her wedding gown. The priest stood between them and recited the vows. "Mr. Hanson, do you take this woman to be your wife?"A heartbeat later, a shrill female voice shattered the silence. "He doesn't!"The guests erupted into an uproar. Caelan, too, instinctively turned toward the source of the voice. However, the moment he realized it was Misty, his heart leaped into his throat. Misty had lost a frightening amount of weight. The red dress that had fit her perfectly now hung loosely on her. There was a new scar on her forehead, and her legs appeared to be injured as well. Consequently, she had no choice but to depend on her wheelchair to get around. Her beautiful eyes were filled with love and remorse as she gazed at Caelan. "I owe you an apology, Caelan. I was wrong. I thought if I let

The biggest news in all of Meridiana lately was that the Lovelace family—the undisputed head of the four great families—was about to hold a wedding! Yet, apart from the fact that he was a man, virtually all information about him was inaccessible. For a moment, the entire elite social circle was dying to know more about the future head of the Lovelace family. …At last, the day of the wedding was upon them. Luxury cars filled the grounds outside the extravagant castle, alongside reporters from various newspapers and television stations. When Caelan arrived at the entrance of the conference room with Vivian, she took a step back and silently mouthed, "Gentlemen, first."He curled his lips into a faint smile, lifted his chin, pushed open the door, and confidently strode in to begin his presentation. His proposal was a resounding success. He took the employees from his department out for a celebratory dinner. When it ended, he emerged from the restaurant to hail a cab.The very next second, Vivian's car pulled up right in front of him. "Do you need a ride, Mr. Hanson?" A smile played on her cherry-red lips. Her fox-like eyes sparkled under the streetlights. Before any of his coworkers could notice, Caelan hurriedly pulled open the passenger door and slipped inside. As the car glided down the street, he closed his eyes to catch a moment's rest. "So, when are you going to make me official?" Vivian's aggrieved voice suddenly rang out from the driver's seat. She proceeded to list her rivals as if she was reading from

"Misty!" Caelan jolted awake. It took him a moment to register the fluorescent lights above him and the office computer in front of him before he realized that he had been in Meridiana for almost two weeks.Even though he had promised himself he would forget Misty for good, he had dreamed about her again during his lunch break that day. Her head was covered in blood, and she was unconscious. He closed his eyes, drew in a deep breath, and slowly exhaled. At long last, he managed to calm his racing heart. "Did you have a nightmare?" A woman's light chuckle sounded from the door. Caelan looked up, only to see Vivian Lovelace leaning against the doorframe in a fitted bodycon mini dress. Her head was tilted as she smiled at him. Her captivating, fox-like eyes were filled with mischief as she asked, "So even our hardworking Mr. Hanson has a day when he gets so exhausted that he has to sneak in a little nap?"He felt his face burn under her gaze, and he retorted, "Sneak in? I'm taking

The vast expanse of mountains loomed like a noose around the young man's neck. Misty stepped out of the helicopter and gazed at the towering mountains surrounding them. She couldn't believe that if she had never learned the truth, the real Ezra might have been trapped here for the rest of his life. The propellers whipped up a fierce gust of wind, sending the hem of Misty's apricot-colored dress flying and revealing the emerald pendant wrapped around her slender wrist. Upon closer inspection, it was easy to spot the imperceptible cracks in the pendant. Misty raised her hand and gently pressed her lips against the emerald pendant, murmuring affectionately, "Hold on a little longer, Caelan. I won't give up on you." Her bodyguards dragged the bruised and battered Mason off the helicopter behind her. Mason had been scared out of his wits. He cowered like a frightened quail as he led the way. Quite a few villagers recognized Mason from the houses along the road and mocked him in t
