Chapter 1

The moment I pushed open the apartment door, I took off that custom wedding dress, grabbed a pair of scissors, cut it to pieces, and stuffed it straight into the trash.

The white satin ripped under the blades, much like our past ten years. It was already full of holes, but I just couldn't bear to face the truth.

I immediately called my family's private lawyer and told him to list and sell the premium aquatic center downtown right away.

That was the secret training facility I had custom-built for Nate years ago using my own trust fund.

The lanes and water temperature matched Olympic standards perfectly. I even paid top dollar to hire a coaching staff that had trained gold medalists just to create a custom plan for him.

From the very beginning, I paved the way for this unknown athlete.

However, Nate was just entering the pro circuit at the time and had a massive ego. He refused to mention my existence to the public. To avoid suspicion, he also rarely showed up at the training center.

He was afraid that if people knew I was the real owner, he would be called a leech who used a woman to get ahead.

To protect his ridiculous pride, I moved into a run-down apartment near the team's public pool. During the day, I acted as his agent, securing sponsorships and accompanying him to practice. At night, I stayed up late writing business pitches to pay for his expenses.

Thinking back on it now, I had never struggled so much in my entire life.

But now that I was leaving, there was no longer any need for this aquatic center.

I settled the severance packages for the venue staff, and the lawyer quickly started the property transfer.

Looking at the transfer updates popping up on my phone, my heavy heart finally felt a sliver of relief.

I could have lived a completely different life. But for a man who wasn't worth it, I gave up being a wealthy heiress and worked myself to the bone as his unpaid maid.

I had just stuffed all of Nate's belongings into several large cardboard boxes and was about to throw them out into the hallway when the front door flew open. Nate stormed in.

"Didn't we agree before I left that you would stay home like a good girl? Now all the fans online are talking about some crazy woman in a wedding dress!"

"You know my marketability is at its peak right now. Did you really have to pull a stunt to force a proposal on a night like that? Will you only be happy when you completely ruin my career?"

His tone made it sound like I had committed some unforgivable crime.

But if I hadn't seen him flirting with Lexi under the spotlight just a few hours ago, and if he hadn't completely ignored the reporters' questions, I might have actually felt guilty. I might have thought that making our relationship public would hurt his bright future.

"What? You tried so hard to stop me from going. Were you afraid I would catch you and Lexi playing up a fake romance in front of the cameras?"

"Nate, I will just consider my ten years with you a total waste. From today on, we are done."

"Take your things and get out of my apartment."

I slapped an agency termination agreement against his chest and kicked the boxes out the door. My eyes held absolutely no affection.

His face darkened. He grabbed me and pulled me back into the room, squeezing my wrist hard.

"Haley, what kind of tantrum are you throwing now? I've explained it a million times. Lexi is just a new girl on the team. You have way too much free time. Can you stop with this pointless jealousy!"

"By the way, the team gave Lexi and me some time off next month to relax and recover. I remember you have a yacht under your name. Tell the marina to get it ready."

"I will let the wedding dress thing slide tonight."

He kept talking, completely oblivious to the television screen behind him. It was scrolling the entertainment headline: 'Swimming Star Confirms Romance at Victory Party'.

In the footage, just as cameras surrounded Lexi, Nate pushed through the crowd and shielded her in his arms.

Watching him hold her like that felt like shattered glass in my chest.

That yacht was the one I bought for our honeymoon. It had been sitting quietly at a private marina since it was built. I designed the interior myself.

Now he wanted to bring another woman on board.

Following my gaze, Nate finally noticed the footage on the TV.

A look of undeniable panic flashed across his face.

Out at sea, brilliant sunlight scattered across the crystal-blue ocean, sparkling like crushed diamonds. The fifty-million-dollar superyacht, the Ocean Star, bobbed in the gentle waves. The deck was entirely blanketed in three hundred thousand imported white roses. As the sea breeze blew, their sweet fragrance filled the air, turning the whole world into a pure, breathtaking white.A string quartet began to play a soft, sweeping melody.I wore a custom, hand-beaded gown from Paris. The pearls woven into the long train glowed with a soft luster in the sun. With my hand resting on my father's arm, I walked slowly down the petal-covered aisle.I looked up and saw Julian waiting for me beneath the floral archway, stunning in a tailored white tuxedo. His dark eyes were gentle yet fiercely protective, locked onto me without wavering for a single second. The moment I reached him, my father carefully placed my hand into his."Take care of my girl," my father whispered."With my life, sir." "Listen to me, buddy. You're three months late on rent."The landlord stood in the doorway with his arms crossed, completely out of patience."You're out today, or I'm having my guys toss your crap straight into the dumpster."Nate gripped his phone tight. The screen glowed with a digital court summons and a final warning text from a law firm demanding their millions in penalty fees. The red numbers made his eyes burn."Just give me a few more days... I get paid soon..." His voice shook. He had lost every ounce of the swagger he used to carry."A few days?" The landlord scoffed. "You've been saying that for three months! I'm done playing games. Out. Now."With absolutely zero endorsements left, not a single legitimate swim club would touch a blacklisted liability like him.The sports world is incredibly small. Everyone knew that just to please some gold digger, he had thrown away the one agent who had single-handedly built his career from the ground up.Nobody wanted anything to do wit

The highly anticipated final qualifiers for the World Tour officially began. The stands were packed and buzzing with energy. Media cameras were zoomed in on the starting blocks. The moment the buzzer sounded, Nate felt like his limbs were filled with lead.Three months of brutal insomnia, drowning in lawsuit debts, and barely able to afford decent meals had broken him. Before he even dove in, his knees had been shaking. For the first hundred meters, pure muscle memory kept him barely hanging on to the lead pack. But his strokes were stiff, entirely losing their old, fluid grace."Nate is falling behind!" the commentator's voice echoed through the stadium speakers. "What is going on with him today? His stroke rate is completely off!"Barely halfway through the final stretch, Nate's stamina completely bottomed out.His form completely fell apart, his breathing entirely out of sync. He flailed in the water like a sinking stone. The younger swimmers he used to effortlessly leave in his wak

Half a month later, at the Astor Group's annual sports charity gala.Under the crystal chandeliers, glasses clinked. Everyone in the room was a heavy hitter in the sports and finance world. As the sole heiress of the Astor family, I was chatting and laughing with several major sponsors when I spotted a familiar face.Lexi.She was wearing a visibly rented evening gown, hovering in the corner, desperately trying to cozy up to the older men in sharp suits. It seemed she had completely given up on swimming. Now that Nate was broke and useless, she was out here hunting for her next meal ticket."Hi there, I'm Lexi." She held her champagne glass, flashing a flirtatious smile at a well-known sports investor. "I heard you just bought a new swim team?"The investor was mildly amused by her looks and was about to humor her.I held my champagne and slowly walked up onto the main stage."Everyone, welcome to tonight's gala."I smiled and leaned into the microphone, my eyes locking onto Lexi's hea

I honestly didn't expect Nate to fall this fast. That evening, I was sitting in my corner office on the top floor of the Astor building while my assistant briefed me on the day's sports news.Between losing the millions I poured into his career and facing massive breach-of-contract lawsuits from major sponsors over his scandals, he was ruined. All his bank accounts and assets were frozen. Unable to pay their massive weekly salaries, his elite coaching staff had terminated their contracts and walked out.In the regional qualifiers this afternoon, he tanked terribly. He lost his rhythm in the first half and completely gassed out in the second. In the end, he didn't even make the podium, finishing in a humiliating fifth place. In the video clip, the head coach was furious. Right in front of the media and the crowd, he pointed a finger in Nate's face and tore him a new one, calling him an absolute failure.Looking at Nate's miserable face on the screen, bowing his head to take the screamin

A week later. The conference room at the National Swimming Federation."Nate, did you even look at these penalty clauses?"He stared at the dense block of text, his mind instantly becoming a mess.Usually, Haley would stay up late reading these, highlight the key points, and all he had to do was sign. Now there was no one to carry the load."This... this penalty fee is absurd! You're kicking me when I'm down!" He slammed the table. The representative's expression darkened, and he pulled the contract back."Fine, then don't sign it.""Wait!" He panicked."Nate, to be honest," the representative sneered, "I think you overestimate your own worth.""Those clauses weren't there before because your ex-agent, Miss Haley, flew to our corporate headquarters herself. She argued with our executives for three straight days just to protect you, striking those penalties out line by line!""Now that she's gone, corporate has decided we aren't renewing your deal. On top of that, we're seeking compensa
