We sat there for hours just talking. Well, I asked questions and he talked. Valen told me about growing up as an only child with two loving parents, about graduating high school early and going to college and then med school. Finally, we broached the subject of his current life and he seemed to shut down a little, not as ecstatic to spill all the details.

We were lying on the bed, propped on our elbows while we faced each other, close but not touching, as he told me about what he’d been working on lately. “Well, I’m currently working on a cancer trial, trying to create a drug that will cure a certain childhood cancer that currently has no viable treatment.”

“That sounds interesting. Cancer is a sickness that kills a lot of humans, right?” I’d heard about it in TV shows but had never discussed it at link before.

“Yes, it takes a lot of human lives, is it not a problem for werewolves?” Valen sat up a bit straighter,
