Chapter 3

Author: Cece Jones
I tried explaining, but it only made Marcus angrier.

"Another urn story, Claire? If you're going to lie, at least make it believable! Since you insist this is an urn..."

He grabbed my mom's urn and smashed it on the ground. "Let's see what's really in here!"

The broken shards mixed with pool water, washing away the ashes. I fell to my knees, frantically trying to save what remained of the ashes, but there was nothing left.

"Mom, how could this happen?" I broke down sobbing. My grief seemed to catch Marcus off guard.

That was when Hannah, still sitting on the ground, spoke up with feigned hurt. "Claire, you don't need to put on such a show just to avoid apologizing to me. Your mother has professional caregivers watching her. How could she suddenly die?"

Marcus snapped back to attention, looking at me with even more disgust. "Claire, you're getting more unreasonable by the day! Hannah, let's go. If she wants to put on a show, let her do it by herself!"

Over the next few days, I handled my mom's funeral alone. All our mutual friends tactfully avoided asking about Marcus' whereabouts. He had angrily told off everyone who called asking about my mom's death.

As if to spite me, he posted intimate photos with Hannah all over social media.

Twenty-five days before I was supposed to leave for the research program, I was walking in a daze and did not notice a car speeding toward me. After getting hit, I acted on my survival instincts and immediately called Marcus for help.

"Claire, you've got some nerve calling me. Are you still playing this game? Was it fun making all my friends attend a fake funeral?"

Even now, he did not believe my mom had died.

I had no strength to explain further and only managed to rasp, "Help... Help me, Marcus. I've been in an accident..."

That familiar warm flow came again, and a terrible thought crossed my mind.

"What? I'm coming right over. Where are you?"

Marcus was about to get up when he heard Hannah's pitiful voice. "Mark, Claire wouldn't be calling on purpose to stop you from taking me to my prenatal appointment, would she?"

Marcus paused, his voice clearly laced with anger. "Claire, stop this nonsense!"

When I woke up again, I was greeted by a nurse with a regretful expression. "Ms. Bennett, I'm sorry. We couldn't save your baby."

Even though I had sensed it, I was still devastated.

I had supported Marcus from obscurity to his current success, but it meant nothing compared to Hannah's single complaint. My mom had spent all her savings to support him, only to have him smash her urn, thinking it was a joke. Even our unborn child never got the chance to be born.

Looking at Marcus' various affectionate photos with Hannah, I called my lawyer, Nathan Brooks. "I need you to draft a divorce agreement."

Jason listed off Marcus' crimes like he was reading from a rap sheet. Everyone's expressions shifted from sympathy to outright disgust.Just then, Hannah came out of nowhere like a complete psycho and threw herself at Marcus, stabbing him multiple times.Even though security managed to stop her, Marcus was barely clinging to life by then. Fortunately, everyone here was a medical professional, and their emergency intervention managed to save his life."Hah! Claire, you think you won? Do you know why your mom really died? Because I showed her intimate photos of me and Marcus! She had a heart attack right there and died crying your name!"Hannah stared at me with wild eyes.Marcus looked stunned, his eyes filled with pain and regret. "Claire, I was so wrong..."Hannah was arrested. Her family and lawyers tried to use her supposed severe depression to plead for leniency. However, Jason dug into Hannah's medical records and found out she had been faking the whole depression thing. H

"If you hadn't treated her like garbage, I wouldn't need to be here for her," Jason said.Immediately, someone in the crowd shouted, "Holy shit, is this the scumbag who hung up on his wife when she was calling for help because of another woman?""Damn it, and he has the nerve to accuse her of cheating?""What a shameless asshole! He deserved that punch. I'm gonna make him famous online."The onlookers were getting worked up and ready to surround Marcus. He did not dare stick around any longer and quickly ran off.I looked at Hannah, and a strange thought suddenly crossed my mind. Did she really have severe depression?Jason and I got back in the car, and the atmosphere became unusually quiet.Just before we reached Aunt Jane's house, Jason broke the silence. "Claire, it seems like you really don't remember me."He sighed, his voice tinged with helplessness. Looking at my confused expression, he pulled out an old photograph. My memory suddenly came flooding back.I used to hav

After finishing the project, I was ready to visit my mom's grave. Maybe she would finally visit me in my dreams and give me hell for being such a terrible daughter.Thinking about my mom's scattered ashes, my eyes welled up with tears again. After boarding the plane, I saw Jason, much to my surprise. "What are you doing here?""You looked so pitiful while crying that I couldn't help but tag along. You don't mind an old friend keeping you company on the way home, do you?"I could not argue with him and smiled faintly.Back home, I finally had time to check my phone and go through the many important messages. During the six months I was gone, Marcus had become increasingly haggard from having to deal with Hannah's sudden depression. Unfortunately, people with severe depression really could not handle stress. He could only suppress his emotions and give in to her demands. However, his concessions only made Hannah worse. She even threatened suicide multiple times, demanding that he

"Jason?"It had been so long since someone had treated me like I was precious. These small gestures of tenderness… Marcus had never given me anything like that.I suddenly realized that maybe Marcus had never truly loved me at all."It's okay, it's all in the past."After learning about my situation, Jason said, "Excuse me," and scooped me up in his arms."You're still recovering. Let me carry you the rest of the way."Feeling his heartbeat against my ear, I felt a bit uncomfortable. "Jason, please just let me walk.""Claire, don't push yourself. You know what your body's been through."I went quiet and stopped arguing. The truth was, one month of recovery was nowhere near enough for my body to fully heal. Everyone knew that bone and muscle injuries took months to properly mend. I could get around, but my body was not ready for any real physical exertion."Thank you, Jason. I'm sorry for the trouble.""Claire, you've never been trouble to me."Jason's voice echoed in my ear

My voice was cold as I spoke into the phone. "Marcus, I'm not the one putting you in this impossible situation. You're the one who promised you wouldn't see Hannah to keep me from leaving."Marcus fell silent. I could hear Hannah screaming like a maniac in the background."It's you! You're the one keeping Mark from seeing me! Claire, why didn't that car just kill you..."Marcus abruptly ended the call.I did not want any more drama with him, so I sent all the evidence I had to Nathan.Marcus had not read the divorce agreement carefully and missed that I was filing on grounds of adultery. Thanks to Hannah's evidence, my chances of a successful divorce just got a lot better.A few days later, Marcus called again. Unlike his earlier defiance, his voice was noticeably hoarse."Claire, do you really need to be so petty with someone who has severe depression? Do you know Hannah almost killed herself because of you?"I was not falling for his manipulation. "Marcus, I didn't cause her

I spent two weeks in the hospital for recovery. Maybe my unborn child was watching over me, but my body healed remarkably well. Even the doctor was surprised by my recovery. Finally, I got clearance to leave the hospital. The first thing I did was take my baby's ashes to the cemetery."Mom, I've lost another child. Please take care of it for me."Back at home, I destroyed everything that reminded me of my relationship with Marcus.I smashed the clay carousel he had carefully sculpted for me. When he gave it to me back then, he said that it would be a symbol of our eternal love.I had lost two children and even my mom, yet he simply told me to stop being unreasonable.I tore up our wedding photos. The day we took them, he had held me with tears in his eyes, swearing he would love only me for the rest of his life. However, when I needed help, he cut off my unborn child's only chance of survival. There were also the hundreds of love letters he had written to me. Every single thin
