Chapter 4

Seven years later, Crystal looked at the dozens of calls she'd made to Daniel that had all gone unanswered. She felt a sense of unease creeping up on her.

Daniel never used to behave like this. He would always make a huge fuss about things whenever she did something like this, texting and calling her every minute on the minute until she finally picked up.

He would question her and interrogate her every time, demanding to know why she was still torturing him like this, why she had to cheat on him like this, why she was doing this to him, and then cry and beg for her to go home to him soon.

However, it was just too quiet today.

Daniel never even sent her a single text message today, let alone made any phone calls.

Crystal began to fidget.

She grabbed her coat and spoke to Reuben next to her, who was holding Pearlie in his lap.

"I'm going back for a bit. You can stay here and continue with the trip with Pearlie."

Reuben immediately got to his feet and stopped her from going out.

"What's the matter? Is it Daniel again? Did he go crazy on you again today?

"Crystal, you know how hard it is for us to finally come out on a trip on our own. Just ignore him. When has he ever stopped bothering you like a madman anyway? If you give in to him now, he's only going to walk all over your head again the next time!"

Crystal hesitated, but she still thought of going home to check on Daniel. Reuben sighed helplessly and changed the topic.

"You just promised Pearlie that you'd accompany her to the amusement park tomorrow. You're not going to go back on your word and let your own daughter down in front of her, are you?"

Reuben then gave Pearlie a look.

Pearlie immediately ran up to Crystal and threw herself at her, crying and wailing loudly, "Mommy! You can't go! You're not allowed to go to the Big Bad Man!

"Big Bad Man is a bad person! I hate him because he won't let me go to the amusement park! Mommy, you must stay here and bring me there tomorrow! You must keep your promises! You cannot lie to me!"

Crystal felt something sharp drive into her heart. She petted Pearlie on the head and corrected her, saying, "How many times do I have to tell you? He is your father. You mustn't call him that."

Pearlie then looked up at her with huge, teary eyes.

"I'm sorry, Mommy. But I'll be good if you stay. I won't call him Big Bad Man again when we go back."

Crystal nodded. This was basically agreeing to stay behind. But throughout the night, she kept checking her phone over and over again dozens of times, and still, she never received a single text message from Daniel. He wouldn't pick up any of her calls either.

Around 4:00 am that day, she finally couldn't hold back anymore and booked the earliest flight back home.

Reuben rubbed his eyes sleepily at her when she got up from the bed.

"Crystal? Why are you up so early? The amusement park won't be open this early."

Crystal didn't even look at him and replied, "Daniel hasn't replied to my text messages for a day. I'm worried that something's happened to him. I'm going back to check on him.

"You can stay here and keep Pearlie company."

She was out of the hotel room before Reuben could even stop her.

After the plane touched down, Crystal had a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach. She hopped into a cab and asked the driver to hurry back as quickly as possible.

When she finally arrived at home, she saw an ambulance parked right at the door.

She didn't even wait for the cab driver to come to a complete halt and stumbled out. She rushed into the villa shakily and yelled anxiously, "Dan! What's happened, Dan? Answer me, Daniel Summers!"

Nobody replied to her. The maids and butler were all crowded around Daniel's bedroom, and Crystal fought her way through the crowd, finally getting in.

There was a white sheet placed over what looked to be a body on the ground.

The paramedics got up and looked at Crystal. Then, they said in a grave voice, "Our deepest condolences to you, Ms. Harper.

"It seems that Mr. Summers overdosed on sleeping pills last night. He… He can't be brought back anymore."
