Chapter 1

Warm liquid trickled down my thigh—amniotic fluid mixed with blood.

Shaking, I pulled out my phone, trying to call the family doctor.

"Don't let her make that call!"

Rosa screamed, rushing over and slapping the phone out of my hand.

"You vicious bitch, are you trying to record a video for the cops? Do you want to ruin Bella’s reputation?"

"We raised you just to have you steal a life that wasn't yours, and now you want to destroy my biological daughter?"

She and Frank each grabbed one of my arms, dragging me toward the dark basement. That was where the family kept traitors.

"Reflect on your sins in the holding cell! You're staying there until Marco and Bella’s wedding is over! I won't have your bad juju cursing the church!"

I clawed desperately at the iron door, breaking my fingernails until they bled.

"I’ll cancel the engagement... I won't ruin the wedding! Just get me to a hospital... my stomach hurts..."

Blood dripped onto Rosa’s expensive crocodile skin heels.

She looked down, her face turning pale.

"Damn it... are you... are you pregnant?"

"Get me to a hospital... please..."

Before I could finish, Bella suddenly pulled Rosa away. She frowned, looking the picture of innocence:

"Sister, you're so careless. You got period blood on Mom’s shoes and stained the carpet in Marco’s bridal suite."

"Besides, it's just cramps. Can't you just hold it in? Why make a scene about going to the hospital?"

Tears welled up in her eyes as she looked pitifully at Marco.

"When I was in foster care, my foster dad broke my ribs just because I stole a crust of bread. I gritted my teeth and never made a sound. Sister, you’re just too spoiled."

She covered her mouth as if realizing something.

"I get it. You want Mom and Dad to feel sorry for you so they forget you tried to secretly film my intimate video with Marco, right?"

Her words were like poison pouring into everyone's ears. The shock in Marco and Rosa’s eyes instantly turned to disgust.

"Elena! How can you be so manipulative!"

Rosa kicked me in a rage.

"Bella suffered so much out there without complaining, but you, you fake, you have to put on a show just for period cramps?"

Marco didn't hold back either. He shoved me hard toward the stairs.

"You'll have plenty to suffer once you're kicked out of the family. Start learning to endure it now!"

Looking at their cold faces, I knew staying here meant death.

I gritted my teeth, used the last of my strength to slam into Rosa, and made a run for the main door.

I burst into the apartment hallway, grabbed a passing cleaner, and screamed:

"Call the police! The D'Angelo family is trying to murder a pregnant woman!"

"Family murder" was a taboo in this district. The cleaner screamed in terror, and neighbors started poking their heads out. Even though this was mob territory, publicly murdering a pregnant woman would bring unnecessary trouble—especially heat from the cops and rival families.

Marco chased after me, his face livid, but with so many eyes watching, he didn't dare make a move.

My vision went black, and I lost consciousness completely.

......

When I woke up, I was staring at the stark white ceiling of a private hospital.

I found out I was a "fake" two years ago. During an internal purge of the D'Angelo family, a rival gang tried to kidnap Frank and Rosa.

In the heat of the moment, I pushed them aside and took a knife for them.

During the blood transfusion, the doctor told them my blood type didn't match theirs at all.

The moment the DNA test came back, I went from the family Princess to a so-called "bastard."

I immediately said I would move out and return everything to their real daughter.

Back then, Frank and Rosa held me and cried, saying I was their most precious treasure and would always be a D'Angelo.

I told Marco, my childhood sweetheart, the same thing. I said when his fiancée returned, I would end the engagement.

That night, Marco was dead drunk. He begged me in the pouring rain.

"Elena, I agreed to this alliance because I love you. How can you just give me away?"

That night, we made love frantically in the apartment. He made me swear I’d never leave him.

I thought love could transcend bloodlines.

Until... Bella was found.

I thought of the baby in my belly, a wave of bitterness and tenderness washing over me.

"Piccolo (Little one), you have to be strong. Daddy will protect us..."

With a whoosh, the ward door slid open.

Five years later. Sicily. This is the birthplace of the D'Angelo family, and now, it is our home. The afternoon sun spilled over the lawn of the three-hundred-year-old estate like liquid gold. The air was thick with the scent of lemon trees and olives.I lounged beneath a white parasol, holding a glass of chilled pomegranate juice.Time hadn’t left a single mark on my face; if anything, the nourishment of power and happiness made me look even more composed than I did five years ago."Leo! Stop picking on your sister!"Near the fountain, two angel-like children were playing.Five-year-old Leonardo had the same raven hair and deep blue eyes as Lorenzo. Even at his young age, he already radiated that natural, imposing authority.Right now, he was trying to splash water on his sister.Sofia, who had inherited my light brown hair, cleverly hid behind a stone pillar, giggling."Let them play."Lorenzo walked over, leaned down to kiss my cheek, and handed me a peeled grape."Luca just sent th

Three months later, the best private hospital in Manhattan was surrounded by black-clad bodyguards.Lorenzo held my hand nervously, his palm sweating, his eyes glued to the ultrasound screen."Congratulations, Don. Congratulations, Madam."The elderly doctor adjusted his glasses, his face beaming with a sincere smile."Two strong heartbeats. It’s twins—a boy and a girl."On the screen, two tiny lives were curled up together.Lorenzo froze. I had never seen him make an expression like that.In traditional Italian Mafia families, mixed-gender twins were seen as a miracle, a symbol of prosperity and balance."Two..."Lorenzo muttered to himself, then suddenly stood up and leaned down to kiss me—a kiss that was passionate and trembling."Elena, you are the greatest gift God has ever given me."That afternoon, the entire New York underworld was shaken. With a wave of his hand, Lorenzo transferred three of the family’s private islands in the Mediterranean to my name as a reward for the "moth

The silence in the grand hall was so absolute you could almost hear the champagne bubbles popping in the glasses.Every pair of eyes shifted from shock to naked disgust and revulsion.Bella froze in place, the microphone dropping from her hand and hitting the carpet with a dull thud. The mask of the victim she took such pride in had shattered completely."No... this is fake! It's Photoshopped! Elena framed me!"She screamed like a madwoman, trying to rush the stage to block the screen, but her legs were jelly, and she couldn't take a single step. However, the person reacting even more violently than her was Marco, standing right by her side.Marco stared dead at the medical report on the screen, his eyes nearly popping out of his skull. His face turned from ashen to a sickly green—the color of pure terror mixed with physical nausea.Three months ago. That timeline matched exactly when he had dumped me for Bella, the days they spent wildly hooking up under the Eiffel Tower. His hands sh

Bella's stupidity went beyond anyone’s wildest imagination—it even crossed the line of Lorenzo’s tolerance.Three days after being kicked out of the penthouse, she gave an interview to a TV station known for digging up dirt.On camera, she looked haggard. She wore no makeup and cheap, worn-out clothes. Through tears, she accused "Mafia forces" of persecution, hinting that the D'Angelo family had not only illegally stripped her of her assets but had even issued death threats against her.She was playing with fire.Omertà—the code of silence—is the cornerstone upon which the underworld survives. Anyone who breaks it isn't just a traitor to the family; they become public enemy number one to the entire circle.Lorenzo watched Bella’s twisted face on the TV screen, his expression terrifyingly calm."She thinks this is a Hollywood movie, where playing the victim gets you justice."Lorenzo pressed the off button on the remote, and the screen went black instantly."But she forgot one thing. Th

When I woke up again, I was back in the hospital. The last time I was here, I was nearly forced into an abortion. This time, the doctors and nurses who had laid hands on me were gone. The new doctor had clearly been briefed by Lorenzo; his attitude was incredibly friendly."Miss Elena, the fetus is fine. You just have some soft tissue contusions. You need bed rest."I sat up, instinctively touching my stomach. Thank God the baby was okay.My phone screen on the nightstand lit up. I picked it up to see countless push notifications.Although Bella's livestream had been cut off, screen recordings were spreading like wildfire online. In the video, I was painted as a vicious adopted daughter who would do anything to climb the social ladder—pregnant with a bastard child and attempting to murder her sister. The comment section was filled with vile abuse. Some people had even doxxed the gallery where I used to work, threatening to splash paint on it."Shameless homewrecker!""Die, you thief wh

The rear door was yanked open by a hand clad in a black leather glove."Lorenzo..." I choked out, tears streaming down my face.Inside the van, the thug cursed, reaching for his gun."Shit, who the..."Thwip!There was no wasted breath.Lorenzo raised his hand, and his silenced Beretta made a muffled sound. A neat bullet hole appeared in the man's forehead, and his body slumped over, limp. The remaining thugs were terrified out of their minds, scrambling backward on their hands and knees."Don... Don Lorenzo?!"In this city, there wasn't a soul who didn't recognize that face.Lorenzo didn't even glance at the trash. He moved with infinite gentleness, lifting me out of the wreckage."I'm sorry. I shouldn't have gone to Milan to choose your engagement gift."His deep voice resonated in my ear, trembling slightly.I gripped his lapel tightly, inhaling the familiar scent of cigars and amberwood on him. It was the scent of safety."Our baby...""I know."Lorenzo’s gaze swept over my abdomen
