Chapter 1

Saint Antonio Pier should have been buzzing today.

With the legendary, mysterious Don Lorenzo de Santis due to arrive, the entire Rossi family was on edge.

"No outsiders! Get lost!"

Marco, the gate supervisor, shoved me aside roughly.

I lost my balance completely and stumbled backward, crashing into someone's solid chest.

"Sorry, I—"

"Vito Rossi?"

I turned to apologize, then froze the second I saw who it was.

Seeing me, Vito Rossi's eyes flashed with surprise, but he quickly masked it.

He frowned slightly and stepped back, cold.

Marco caught his expression and went pale.

"Mr... Mr. Rossi!"

"Don't be angry, sir. There's some woman here causing trouble. I bet she figured out someone important was coming today. Probably trying to get inside to seduce you, or maybe crawl straight into your bed! I'll get rid of her right now!"

He waved his baton at me threateningly.

Vito's face darkened. He raised a hand to stop him. "Enough."

I was a little surprised.

Vito let out a cold laugh and looked at me.

"Three years. Cecilia, I thought after you left me you'd make something of yourself. Turns out you're here staging some reunion stunt? If you walked away without a word back then, why come back now? Begging for my pity? Or begging me to take you back?"

In that instant, every memory from three years ago came flooding back.

Vito Rossi used to be my fiancé.

Because of some bullshit betrayal charge, he locked me in a moldy dungeon.

Hunger. Whip marks. Guards humiliating me.

While Vito danced with socialites upstairs in the ballroom, I was curled up in damp straw, trying to count my own ribs just to stay alive—that time taught me one thing for sure: I didn't need him.

But I wasn't that orphan begging for his mercy anymore.

I was the long-lost daughter of the Hernandez family. I was the wife of Lorenzo—the Don whose name alone made Vito tremble.

Before I could speak, Vito went on. "Cecilia, don't stand here making a scene. I spent three months begging for this meeting with Don Lorenzo. In a minute I have to treat his wife like royalty. I don't have time to hear your excuses about running off three years ago."

I looked at Vito's face—arrogant and fawning at the same time—and couldn't help but smile coldly.

So he knew Lorenzo worshipped his wife, but he had no idea the "royalty" he was about to grovel to was standing right in front of him, getting insulted.

"Say something. Don't play dead."

Vito saw my expression and frowned harder.

I took a deep breath. I didn't feel like digging up old dirt, so I just looked at him and said, "Aren't you here to pick me up? Let's go."

With that, I turned coldly and tried to step around him.

But he stretched out his arm and blocked my path.

"Pick you up?" Vito sounded like he'd just heard the joke of the year, his tone dripping with mockery. "Cecilia, haven't seen you in three years and you still can't lie for shit."

"Vito, darling? What's going on?"

A sugary voice drifted over from behind him.

I looked up.

Isabella, dressed in a white lace gown, clung to Vito's arm, her thin heels clicking as she walked over. She looked like some kind of saint, wearing that sickeningly graceful smile.

"Cecilia? Is that you?" She saw me and covered her mouth in exaggerated shock. "I thought you'd been dead for three years. Vito, why didn't you tell me she was still alive?"

"Your books show a hundred thousand euro loss every month, but you just bought three beachfront villas in Miami last month." I tapped the table, looking at him coldly. "Did that money fall from the sky, or are you going to tell me you won the lottery?"He deflated on the spot, cold sweat dripping down, unable to get out a single word. After that, no one dared question my methods. The family's monthly income went up thirty percent. At the full family meeting, Lorenzo wrapped his arm around my waist and publicly announced I was the steward of the de Santis family. Two months later, I found out I was pregnant. With twins.Lorenzo, the man who didn't blink during shootouts, actually froze when he heard the news. He reached out to touch my belly, his palm trembling. From that day on, the Don changed. He canceled all unnecessary meetings, walked with me around the estate every day, and forced me to listen to prenatal music. Most ridiculous of all—he started learning to cook pregnancy meals.

She called Vito a jinx, afraid he'd drag her down and make her lose this "good job."Vito staggered to his feet, gripping her wrist hard, begging her to come back to that ten-square-meter apartment."Home? That drafty doghouse is a home?" Isabella shook him off, laughing until tears came out. "Vito, stop playing the devoted lover. If you weren't so useless, if you weren't stupid enough to let Lorenzo catch you, would I be in this mess?"Vito's eyes reddened. His voice was hoarse as he questioned her. "Who told me to embezzle that money? Who made me frame Cecilia? If I hadn't been laundering money for your family, I'd still be the Rossi heir!""That's because you're stupid!" Isabella spat in his face. "Bottom line—you're useless!"Vito froze. In the dim streetlight, he saw the glaring purple hickeys on Isabella's neck and the dense needle marks on her arms. The "socialite" he used to treasure was now rotten to the core.Isabella wasn't done. Counting the bills in her hand, she twisted t

"Isabella has moved to the red-light district on the east side," Lydia said, tossing a stack of photos onto the table. The Isabella in the photographs was unrecognizable. Gone was the high-society socialite; in her place was a woman dressed in an incredibly revealing, cheap sequined dress that clung to her body like a second skin. Caked in heavy makeup, she sat on the lap of a man with a face full of scarred flesh, her smile sycophantic and hollow.Vito had been kept in the dark at first. He actually believed Isabella was working at a restaurant to help support their meager household. That was until the day his hunger became unbearable. He had gone to that nightclub hoping to scrounge a free meal, only to push open the door and find Isabella wrapped around a greasy Russian, laughing as she pressed herself into his chest. The confrontation had been immediate and ugly.Vito had lost his mind, lunging forward to slap her, but Isabella was colder. She called the police. In this city, an ex

Isabella couldn't keep up the act anymore. She screamed, "Those were just business meetings!""Business meetings that required selling out Lorenzo's schedule?" I threw down the last stack of evidence. "These are emails you sent to the Matteo family. Pier defense maps, member whereabouts, the Don's itinerary—it's all here."Lorenzo's face turned iron-cold. He crushed the cigar in his hand against the table."Lorenzo, what's the verdict?" I turned to ask him."The Benetti family—sentenced to death by law. Leave no one." Lorenzo's voice was ice cold, with no room for negotiation.Isabella collapsed on the spot, kowtowing until her face was covered in blood, screaming for mercy. Guards dragged her out like a dead dog.Lorenzo didn't look at her. He kept his eyes on Vito and continued, "Out of respect for your father once saving mine, I'll spare your life. But you're stripped of your position. All assets seized. Your entire family leaves Saint Antonio immediately. Never come back."Vito slu

The first file made me laugh coldly—Vito Rossi, the man who constantly talked about family honor, was actually a thief lining his own pockets.Under the pretense of expanding Warehouse Three, he withdrew eight million euros from the family's public account in four separate transfers. Through complex money laundering channels, all that money ended up in a secret Swiss account. And the account holder? Isabella's mother.Lydia cut in coldly from the side. "That's not all. The Benetti family's so-called jewelry business is actually a front for the Matteo family, specifically for laundering money and smuggling. Isabella getting close to Vito was infiltration from the start. She's a high-level spy. Her target was stealing the de Santis family's shipping routes.""There's something even better, ma'am." Marco pulled out a stack of photos from his briefcase.I took the photos. My stomach churned. In the photos, Isabella had ditched that pure white dress. She was in a nightclub, making out with

"No... Don... Vito, save me!" Isabella screamed hysterically, trying to hide behind Vito.Vito still wanted to explain. "Don, about those files, I can explain. Cecilia must have gotten involved with some shady people outside. She's deliberately trying to frame us with this stuff...""BAM!"Lorenzo didn't give him a chance to bullshit. A heavy punch slammed straight into Vito's face. The blow was brutal. Vito was sent flying to the ground, his lip split instantly, dark red blood mixing with dirt pouring out."Vito!" Isabella screamed. Before she could rush to him, the de Santis guards instantly surrounded them, moving in perfect sync to pin Vito down on the gravel, making it impossible for him to move."Files? You mean these?" Enzo picked up the scattered papers from the ground, then pulled out another thick folder. He read in a businesslike tone, "Vito Rossi. During his time as pier supervisor, embezzled eight million euros from the family, secretly colluded with the Matteo family, sol
