Chapter 5

Author: Yvie Dumpling
“Mom.”

Susan turned toward Josie, and her eyes immediately filled with tears.

Josie gave her a small, reassuring smile. “Mom, don’t get worked up. He is not worth damaging your health over.”

Zac finally seemed to notice the wheelchair. His voice tightened. “Is your foot alright?”

Josie looked at him with thinly veiled mockery. “Even if I died and turned into dust, Mr. Lucas, what would that have to do with you?”

His mind was entirely fixated on Suzy. He had even forgotten how she hurt her ankle in the first place.

Zac frowned. “I am sorry. I know you are angry. But I truly love Suzy, and I hope you can understand my choice.”

Whether it was his choice in the fire or his choice now.

Josie’s heart twinged again, but when pain reached its limit, numbness took over.

She let out a short laugh. “A man who calls off a wedding at the last minute. What kind of husband would that make you? Zac Lucas, let me make this clear. Even if you got on your knees and begged to marry me, I still wouldn’t want to marry you.”

Zac’s brows drew together as he stared at Josie, his gaze steady and intent.

Her reaction stunned him.

He had imagined tears. He had imagined her shouting and demanding answers. He had even imagined her rushing up to strike him across the face. That would have been the Josie Lindsay he knew at twenty: fiery, impulsive, and unfiltered.

He had mentally prepared himself how to calm her.

But she did none of that.

She was composed and detached, watching everything with an almost chilling clarity.

It unsettled him.

For a fleeting moment, he wondered if she had also come back.

His eyes tightened as he studied her, emotions swirling beneath the surface.

Suzy sensed something strange between them and stepped forward, blocking Zac’s line of sight. She looked guilty and fragile.

“Josie, I truly am sorry. I never meant to hurt you. But Zac stayed with me the entire night. He even murmured my name in his sleep. I simply could not turn him away.”

She reached toward Josie with a hopeful look.

“Will you forgive me? Can we go back to how we were before, as the best of sisters?”

Josie rolled her eyes and refused to waste a single word on her.

Suzy froze, humiliated. She bit her lip and tried to look delicate and wounded.

Carl noticed Josie refusing to play the role he expected and immediately deepened his voice.

“Josie Lindsay. Our guests have been here all this time, and you choose now to come downstairs. Have you no manners?”

Susan had barely held herself back until this moment. Then she ignited.

“Josie inhaled smoke in that fire. Her ankle is injured. And you, as her father, have not asked even once whether she is alright.

“If you cannot bother to care about her, fine. But you have no right to lecture her about manners.”

She raised her voice sharply. “Mrs. Wilson.”

The housekeeper, Mrs. Wilson, came forward quickly. “Yes, ma’am.”

Susan turned her gaze on Suzy, her tone icy cold.

“Since Miss Bell clearly has no intention of staying in this household and has already chosen another home, it's clear that our Lindsay residence is too small to host such a distinguished guest.

“Go upstairs and pack every one of her belongings. Not a single item stays in this house.”

For six months, Susan had poured generosity into Suzy.

Chanel outfits. Hermès bags. Dior perfumes. The newest fine jewelry.

If she felt something suited Suzy, she bought it without hesitation.

She had even planned to help Suzy find a suitable marriage match after Josie’s wedding.

Now the irony of it felt like a punch in the chest.

Mrs. Wilson acknowledged the command at once and headed upstairs.

Carl quickly stepped forward to stop her. “Susan Spencer, that is enough. You gave those items to her. What right do you have to throw them out?”

Susan did not look at him. Her eyes stayed fixed on Mrs. Wilson.

“Mrs. Wilson, take the staff and go. I’d like to see who dares to stop you.”

By the time she snapped out of it, the man had already walked past her without a single glance.Caleb rushed over, still pale. “Miss Lindsay, are you alright? You scared me. That was Mr. Jenkins. In her past life, she had only ever heard rumors about the Jenkins family’s mysterious second son. People said he was ruthless, sharp-eyed, and chose his business partners purely based on mood. She had never seen him in person. She lifted her chin, trying to get a better look at the man everyone was whispering about. Before she could focus, her wrist was suddenly yanked.A strong, unquestionable force pulled her out of the crowd.Josie spun around and met a pair of furious eyes.Zac.He didn’t give her a chance to react. He dragged her into an empty lounge, pinned her against the wall, and stared down at her with a dark, suffocating intensity.“Josie, do you even take me seriously? You know perfectly well that Lucas Corporation and Jenkins Corporation are sworn rivals, yet you still want to work with Horizon Home under the Jenkins Corporation. Are you doing this on purpose?”“Zac, let go of me.”Josie frowned in disgust and shoved him, but he didn’t budge. She gave him a col

Suzy looked at her with wounded eyes.“Josie, are you still mad at me? Is it because I took your position at Galaxy? I swear I never wanted that. I really want us to go back to how we used to be.”Josie stared at her, momentarily thrown off by how sad and innocent Suzy looked. How had she missed the fact that Suzy was this good at playing innocent?Wendy had warned her more than once. She had said Suzy had a manipulative streak and that Josie should be careful. And what had Josie said back then?“Suzy isn’t like that. She just grew up overseas and has a more open, direct personality.”Looking back now, she realized she had given Suzy a “friend’s daughter” filter because their mothers were close. She had tried to take care of her out of loyalty. She never imagined Suzy’s ambition would be this big.Big enough to steal her fiancé.Big enough to steal her job.Josie suddenly laughed.“Suzy, how shameless do you have to be to say something that shameless?”Suzy froze. Josie’s heart gave a hard thump. Hugo’s face was so close she could see every sharp line of it, and those deep, unreadable eyes looked as if they could see right through her.So she lifted her chin and gave him a soft, sweet smile, her dimples faint but clear.“I want you to accompany me to an event tomorrow evening. Would that be alright?”Hugo frowned. “I have something to do tomorrow evening.”Josie’s smile froze. Her mind flashed back. She had turned him down just as bluntly before. So this man really was the type to hold a grudge.A mix of frustration and helplessness bubbled up in her chest.“Fine then. Sorry for bothering you.”She pointed at the food container on the cabinet. “Make sure you eat it while it’s still warm.”The door closed with a soft thud.Hugo picked up the insulated container. It was pink and cute. His expression darkened slightly as if something weighed on his mind.*The next evening, outside the entrance of the business gala.Josie had just h

Hugo was still shirtless, his toned upper body bare, with only a pair of dark gray athletic shorts hanging from his hips. Sweat beaded on his skin and rolled down across his firm chest and abs, disappearing into that maddeningly defined V-line.The weather wasn’t even warm, yet he was drenched. Strangely, it didn’t smell bad at all. Instead, there was a clean, soapy scent mixed with a light masculine sweat, something unexpectedly attractive. He noticed Josie standing at the doorway and frowned slightly.“Did I disturb you again?”Josie’s mind exploded on the spot.No way. Wasn’t last night intense enough? Was he really going for another round tonight? His stamina was ridiculous! How much energy did this man have? Her cheeks flushed instantly. She stammered, “N-no. I just… you looked like you didn’t eat dinner, so I made something.”She held out the insulated food container. “Instant noodles aren’t healthy. If it’s not enough, I can send more for you two.”“You two?”Hugo’s

Mrs. Lopez looked at the three sports cars gleaming under the garage lights, her eyes filled with regret.“Miss Lindsay, you treasured these cars the most. You even had the whole garage expanded just so they would have enough space.”She sighed inwardly. They had been such a good couple, so in love. How had things fallen apart to this point?Josie’s voice was calm. “There’s nothing between us anymore. Mrs. Lopez, please have them dealt with as soon as possible.”With that, she walked straight to the key cabinet on the other side of the garage and took out a set of keys. It was the Bentley Susan had given her for her birthday last year.“Mr. Wilson,” she told the driver waiting nearby, “pull out the white Bentley and follow behind my car.”When she returned to her apartment building, she had just parked when she spotted Hugo’s tall, lean figure walking out of the convenience store. He was holding a cup of instant noodles as he stepped into the elevator.Josie froze for a moment.
