Cassie woke up to the sun streaming through Dom's windows and the smell of coffee wafting from downstairs.

She stretched, feeling the ache in her muscles, and smiled. Last night had been perfect.

She padded downstairs to find Dom in the kitchen, making breakfast.

"Morning," he said, smiling at her. "I made pancakes."

"You made pancakes?"

"Don't sound so surprised. I told you I can cook."

Cassie kissed him. "They smell amazing."

They ate breakfast in comfortable silence, stealing glances and sm

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND ELEVENCassie woke to an empty bed and the sound of the back door easing shut downstairs, sunlight already fully up outside, later than she usually slept, her body clearly having needed the exhaustion of last night to finally give in. She found him in the garden a few minutes later, sitting on the low stone bench near the hedges, his bad leg stretched out in front of him at an angle that had to be uncomfortable, staring at nothing in particular the way he did when something had settled too heavy to process sitting still indoors."Hey," she said softly, approaching slowly across the wet grass, unsure of her welcome. He didn't look up right away. "Hey.""Can I sit?""It's your garden too, Cassie."She sat beside him, close enough to feel the tension still radiating off him but careful not to reach for his hand the way she normally would without thinking. "You didn't come to bed.""I was working.""I'm sorry," she said, the words coming out smaller than she meant

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TENDom got home a little after seven, tired but in good spirits. David had taken Dom to a Physiotherapy hospital to see people who had cases like his and were nowhere close to recovery just to show him how far he had gone. "How was your day?""Fine," Cassie said, and then, because she'd never been good at sitting on something once it was already surfacing, the words came out before she'd fully decided to say them. "My dad came by today."Dom's expression shifted instantly, the easy warmth draining out of it. "He what?""He came by and we talked.""Cassie, he's not supposed to just show up here. There's an active case and we haven't fully understood his involvement. Him showing up unannounced isn't just inappropriate, it could actually complicate things legally.""I know but we only talked for a few minutes."Dom pulled out the chair across from her slowly, sensing this wasn't going to be a short conversation, his good mood from the office already evaporating.

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND NINECassie was in the kitchen, halfway through wiping down the counter, when she caught movement through the front window and looked up to see her father standing in a suit that looked too formal for a casual visit, hands folded in front of him like a man rehearsing an apology. For a moment she just stood there, dish towel still in her hand, debating whether to answer the door at all. Part of her wanted to pretend she hadn't seen him, let him stand out there and eventually give up and leave. But another part of her, the part that still hadn't fully closed the door on that one honest phone call weeks ago, walked toward the front hall anyway. She opened the door only partway, keeping her body angled to block most of the entrance."You shouldn't be here," she said."I know," Richard said, just standing there patiently as if waiting for an invitation. " I won't stay long. I just need five minutes, Cassie. That's all I'm asking."She hesitated, the memory of that c

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHT"It's inflammation," David said the second Cassie picked up the call, she felt her knees nearly give out with relief."Overexertion, most likely from him pushing through that stiffness the last few days instead of resting it. There's thankfully no new tear or damage to the surgical site."Cassie closed her eyes, letting out a shaky breath she hadn't realised she'd been holding since yesterday. "So he's okay," Cassie said, needing to hear it stated plainly."He's okay," David confirmed. "He needs a week of rest, ice, and actual honesty from him going forward about what his body's telling him. But this isn't a relapse.""You're sure?""I know inflammation when I see one Cassie. Dom is okay.""And he hasn't undone months of recovery?""Nope." David's tone softened. "He's frustrated because he's been making excellent progress, but progress also comes with limits. His body reminded him of one yesterday. If he listens to it now, he'll be fine.""I can't tell yo

Dom was practically buzzing with nervous energy the morning of the appointment, pacing the living room in a way that made Cassie laugh despite herself."You're going to wear yourself out before we even get there," she said, watching him move back and forth."I just want to actually do this," Dom said. "I've been building toward this specific test for weeks. I want it over with.""It's not a test you fail, Dom. It's just where you're at today.""I know that logically," he said. "Doesn't stop me wanting to prove something.""You don't have anything left to prove," Cassie said softly. "You've already done the impossible."He smiled faintly but didn't answer.
