Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
"You seriously called his parents over something this private? Do you have no shame?" Linda finally snapped and yelled at me, furious.

I covered my mouth in mock surprise, then slapped her across the face.

"So you do know this is private," I shot back. "Then why did you think it was okay to hide under my bed?"

The moment she got hit, Hendrick forgot all about his parents and rushed forward, shoving me back.

"Madeline! That was way out of line! Linda's just straightforward. She was curious but didn't want to say it, so I let her listen in. It's not like anything happened to you. Why are you making such a big deal out of it?"

Linda leaned into his arms, glaring at me like she wanted to tear me apart.

"Madeline, right?" she said coldly. "Cute name. Funny how you didn't sound so innocent earlier. Maybe I should send that recording to the group chat. Let everyone hear what you're really like."

My head went blank for a second. I turned to Hendrick.

He just stared back at me, his expression cold, like he actually thought I deserved it for hitting her.

The three of us froze there in a standoff, but his parents didn't.

They rushed in like a storm.

Dave West's fist slammed straight into Hendrick's face. Julie West followed with a sharp slap that sent Linda crashing to the floor.

"What is wrong with you two?" she snapped. "Do you even hear yourselves?"

Hendrick and Linda were both stunned.

Linda tried to say something, but Julie grabbed her by the hair and dragged her toward the door, kicking her out without hesitation.

Hendrick moved to follow, only to take another solid punch head-on from Dave.

"I told you before," Dave barked, "any girl who sticks around a group of guys like that under the excuse of being 'one of the boys' isn't there for the right reasons. She's already humiliated Madeline, and you still want to chase after her? What's wrong with you?"

Hendrick clenched his jaw, refusing to back down.

"Who I choose to be friends with is my business," he shot back. "I'm an adult. Can you stop controlling me?"

The words had barely left his mouth before another slap landed across his face.

"Do you think we care about controlling you? We're standing up for Madeline!"

What Hendrick didn't know was that years ago, Dave and my father had served together. Dave had been badly injured and lost the chance to have children of his own. My father had risked his life to bring him back.

He adopted Hendrick later on.

In the Wests' eyes, I mattered far more than the son they had taken in.

Faced with his parents' anger, Hendrick finally backed down.

"Madeline, Linda really didn't mean anything by it," he said, forcing the words out. "If she crossed a line, I'll apologize for her, okay? I've already taken enough hits today. Can you just let it go?"

Under his parents' expectant gaze, I let out a quiet sigh and nodded.

My parents had appointed Dave and Julie as my godparents since I was a kid. The Wests had built a massive business empire over the years. Worried Hendrick would run it into the ground, they came to my family, hoping to tie us together through marriage.

Back then, they had promised my parents that no matter what Hendrick did, I would never be wronged.

Looking at things now, at least that part was true.

Afterward, Hendrick's allowance was cut off. Whether he had actually learned his lesson or was just putting on a show for his parents, he eventually cut ties with Linda.

Seeing him fall in line, I got my things in order and decided to focus on becoming the Wests' future daughter-in-law.

The two families quickly settled on a wedding date. Once the venue and decorations were all arranged, Hendrick pulled me aside, hesitating.

"Madeline, so, uh… My old friends want to throw me a bachelor party. Wanna go with me?"

After everything that had happened, I didn't even hesitate.

"Is Linda going to be there?"

Hendrick froze, his face twitching like he couldn't process what he had just heard."Linda, you're doing this on purpose, right? You're worried about me, so you're pushing me like this to make me go back to my family, right?"Linda snapped. She swung her bag and smacked him across the head."Take a good look at yourself! You've got nothing going for you. If it weren't for your family's money, why would I have stuck around? Let me make this clear. There's nothing between us. We're done!"With that, she turned and walked off fast, as if she was afraid that he would catch up.Hendrick didn't follow. His eyes were red, his legs unsteady as he grabbed the counter and sank to the floor."How did this happen…"Not one of his so-called friends stepped forward. They all slipped out quietly, leaving him there alone. He broke down."Mom, Dad… I was wrong," he said hoarsely. "I finally see what they're really like. I'll marry Madeline. I'll do whatever you say. Just please, don't cut me o

Hendrick and Linda nodded, as if they had just found their courage."Mom, Dad, if you keep forcing me to be with Madeline, then I'll leave the Wests and never come back."Linda lifted her brows, clearly waiting for Dave and Julie to give in for the sake of their only son.The room went quiet. Everyone held their breath, watching.Dave reached into his pocket and pulled out a document."Fine," he said flatly. "Then go."Hendrick froze. "What did you just say?"Julie took the paper and shoved it in front of him. "You heard him. From today on, you are no longer part of this family."Hendrick stood there, stunned. His hand lifted, trembling, as he pointed at me. "You're kicking me out for someone who isn't even married into the family yet?"Dave and Julie didn't hesitate."Hendrick, we planned to keep this from you forever. But after what we've seen today, you deserve the truth. You're adopted. Also, Madeline isn't the same as you. Her parents once saved our lives. To us, she m

I took a slow breath and bent down to pick up the wedding dress.Linda started clapping immediately, practically glowing with excitement."Some people talk big about marrying some big shot, but in the end, they still come crawling back, don't they? Madeline, I'm warning you! If you don't perform well, don't expect things to go smoothly for you during the wedding."Before she could finish, I flung the dress straight at her face."If you're so into it, you do it," I said flatly. "You seem pretty eager."The fabric smeared her carefully done makeup, and she shrieked in frustration."What are you talking about?" she snapped. "I grew up with them! We're like brothers. Not everyone relies on looks like you do!"That didn't sit well with me.I reached out and yanked off her false eyelashes. While she covered her face, I grabbed the thick padding she had stuffed into her top and pulled it out."Then explain this," I said, holding it up.Linda looked like she was about to lose it. "Wh

Linda was so mad that she was practically shaking."Cut the crap! I know you're just jealous!"I gave Linda a once-over and only then noticed she was wearing a fitted short skirt that highlighted her curves.Guess my presence finally made her feel threatened. She was in a hurry to lock Hendrick down.Hendrick frowned, his voice turning sharp."Madeline, you keep saying we're over, but you're still here checking on wedding plans. It's obvious you're still hoping to marry me. Let me make this clear. Linda's my closest friend. If you still want to be part of my family, then apologize to her. Now."For a second, I didn't even know how to respond."Wow," I said finally. "After you let your friend spy on us and humiliate me in public, you really think I'd still want to marry you? I already told you. I'm planning my wedding with Vincent Chavez. Honestly, with that level of confidence, you might want to get your head checked."I rolled my eyes and turned to the staff, giving instructio

The reply came almost instantly.[Let's get married! Right now! Where are you? I'll come to you.]I couldn't help smiling.[Pick me up at my place in ten minutes.]Twenty minutes later, Vincent Chavez and I walked out of City Hall with our marriage certificate in hand. He was practically bouncing, holding it up to the sunlight like he couldn't believe it was real."Madeline, we're officially married now."What kind of wedding do you want? I'll handle everything."By the way, this is my asset transfer paperwork, and my family account. Before we signed, I already had my assistant move all my fixed assets into your name. It's all yours now."If there's anything else you want, just tell me!"He looked at me like I was the only thing in the world that mattered.Something in my chest softened.Funny how one person could treat me like I was nothing, while another had everything ready for me before I even asked. After a brief silence, I spoke."I'll handle the wedding," I said qui

At that, Hendrick stopped what he was doing entirely. He snatched my phone and hurled it straight into the water."Madeline! Are you ever going to stop?"Linda seized the moment. "Hendrick, if you don't deal with her now, then we're really done."Something in her tone set him off. He reached out and grabbed my hair."If you still want to marry into my family, then drink that water and promise you'll stop getting in between Linda and me!"I had never been humiliated like this in my life. My eyes stung, tears threatening to fall."Hendrick, you think I'm dying to marry you? We're done!"Linda clapped from the side, delighted."Well, look at that. The bachelor party just turned into a freedom party. Congrats, Hendrick! Some people walk away, thinking they'll find better. Good luck with that."Before she could say anything else, someone kicked her sideways, sending her stumbling hard.Hendrick froze when he saw who it was, his face draining of color."Dad, Mom, can you give me s
