Chapter 1

Shane Falkner was stunned for a moment. "Marina, what's the matter?"

I was just about to tell him, "A law firm in Vaeland reached out to me through a recruiter, and I've already signed with them."

However, Shane had already turned his attention to Sabrina Langford, who was sobbing pitifully next to him. "Come on, stop crying. No one's expecting you to save the day, anyway. Why are you being such a coward?"

Pain rippled through my heart, shutting down my urge to share.

Back in my sophomore year, I was battling a high fever when I joined a moot court competition with Shane, who was just a senior back then. Of course, my performance was a wreck.

Shane chewed me out in public after the competition. I was so humiliated that I couldn't even look up.

He said, "In the real world, no one will pity you just because you're sick. Marina, you're not a weakling. If you really want to win, you don't get to make excuses."

That was the last time I showed any vulnerability around Shane.

Later on, I gave my all to force myself to grow. I wanted to catch up to Shane's talent with my hard work.

But as I forged ahead, somewhere along the way, I finally took time to pause and look back. It was only then that I suddenly realized my best friend Sabrina, whom I treated as my own family, had already come in between Shane and me with her cruelly innocent smile. There was no changing it now.

Pulling myself out of my thoughts, I was suddenly curious about something. "Shane, do you still remember what day it is today?"

My graduation ceremony was five years ago, on this very day. Shane had spent all his savings on a diamond ring, which he presented to me as he confessed his feelings. "Congratulations on graduating, my dear partner. Would you give me a chance to fight alongside you in a battle we can't possibly lose?"

In just five years, I had already lost this battle through and through.

When I finished speaking, I heard Shane's breath catch in his throat. It sounded like he had just realized something.

"I'm sorry, Marina. I've been really busy these days. Just hang on and wait for me at home. I'll be there in 30, no, 15 minutes."

After ending the call, I stood in front of the dining table for a moment. In the end, for some inexplicable reason, I still decided to reheat the food on the table, which had gone completely cold.

Ignoring the subtle anticipation welling up in my heart, I reassured myself that this would be a peaceful ending to our relationship.

It didn't seem too bad to end our last anniversary on a dignified note.

15 minutes later, Shane had returned as promised.

The renowned Mr. Falkner, who was usually quite particular about his image, was completely drenched as he dropped the cake box carelessly onto the cabinet in the entryway.

Loosening his tie, he headed toward the bathroom and said, "I got caught in the rain, so I'll go take a shower first. If you're feeling hungry, you can eat the cake with Sabrina first. I'll join you guys later."

Sabrina poked her head out from behind him, grinning sheepishly at me. "It's raining cats and dogs outside. Shane was worried I might miss my station if I took the subway, so he brought me over for dinner instead. Your favorite third wheel is back again today!"

It was pouring outside.

When I noticed that Sabrina was completely dry, I felt something crack in my heart.

Shane was born with the precision and calm found in most legal professionals. Whenever it rained and we had to share an umbrella, he would say that relationships were built on equality, so he would hold the umbrella squarely between us.

For a moment, I had the urge to ask him if his white-knighting tendencies had finally stripped him of all reason. I wondered if it had gotten so bad that he instinctively let her have the umbrella while getting drenched in the rain himself.

I was so close to voicing it, but I forced myself to hold it in.

I simply stepped aside to let Sabrina in. Then, I smiled. "You can have the cake."

She stuck out her tongue bashfully. "While it's true that I do love strawberries… Mr. Falkner personally chose this cake for your anniversary. I don't think I should eat it."

She had a sincere smile on her face when she said that.

Maybe it was exactly her unguarded cheerfulness that convinced Shane to willingly let her have the umbrella. But it also convinced me that I would only look petty and bitter if I talked about how wounded I felt.

At that point, I had already lost my patience."Shane." Setting down my cup, I interrupted him, "Are you telling me all this to make me feel better or to make yourself feel better?"Shane froze.I continued, "Getting drunk and mistaking her for me might have been the beginning, but you have made that conscious choice every single day from then on."He leaned back in the chair, looking like all the air was sucked out of his lungs.A long while later, he said in a hoarse voice, "You always see right through everything.""Thanks to you, I've also spent a few years learning things the hard way." I stood up. "Shane, since you've chosen her, just man up and treat her right."I turned around to leave."Marina," he called out to me.I paused in my tracks, but I didn't turn to face him.He continued, "If I could start over again, I wouldn't have gone to that cafe to console Sabrina in your stead."Just then, the music in the cafe shifted to a new track. For several seconds, I stood

Sabrina rubbed her eyes, tears streaming down her face as she sobbed. She was crying as messily as she used to when she was younger. "When did you get back? Why didn't you say anything?"She sniffled and took a step forward, but then she paused as if she suddenly remembered something. Gripping the fabric of her dress, she said, "I sent you so many messages, but you never replied…"I said, "I changed my number."She froze for a moment. She opened her mouth to say something, but in the end, she just asked, "Are you… cutting me out of your life?"I stared at her.For some reason, I suddenly recalled many memories.I remembered how she took my hand and led me to her house for Christmas dinner and how she told her parents that she had brought home a genius daughter for them.I remembered how we promised to treat each other's children like our own.I remembered when she said, "I'll always stay by your side."But look whose side she stayed by in the end.I closed my eyes. The emot

The climate in Fogsport, Vaeland, was quite humid. It was a stark contrast to Nordvale, where I had spent most of my life.Still, I adapted to the weather pretty quickly. In my third month there, I successfully closed a cross-border merger and acquisition case. Later, during the law firm's annual meeting, Aaron Harrington had a wine glass in his hand as he proudly sang my praises to his peers. "Our new lawyer from Centria is both highly capable and incredibly efficient!"Sparkling wine in hand, I simply flashed a smile. I didn't mention that I used to tackle the workload of five people on my own.It was also at that annual meeting where I met Lucas Hammond again.I had first met him during a project negotiation, where he was representing a multinational company with roots in Centria.Throughout the whole meeting, he was seated at the end of the long table. His suit was crisply tailored, and he never spoke more than ten sentences. However, every point he made targeted the exact fl

Shane's intuition was always spot-on.As a genius lawyer, he often won in court by relying on his almost instinctive senses to catch any vulnerabilities. He was used to it.But this time, when he rushed home, completely out of breath, he saw my empty closet and noticed my passport was missing. He could barely breathe from the pain he was feeling. He turned around and went to the living room. Then, he spotted the diamond ring lying quietly on the kitchen island. He picked it up and held it tightly in his fist. The cool surface of the ring sent shivers down his spine. He closed his eyes for a moment, then immediately rushed to the underground garage. He drove back to the law firm.My desk was already cleared out. The desk was wiped clean with not even a speck of dust on it.The trainee lawyer nearby timidly looked up at Shane, only to quickly look down again in fear after seeing his terrifyingly dark expression.Shane headed over to the HR department, walked into Ruth's office,

At the hospital, when the nurse entered the hospital room, she happened to see Shane bending over in front of Sabrina. He was blowing on her burns. The young nurse deftly treated Sabrina's burns. Then, she put on an admiring smile as she said, "Ms. Langford, your boyfriend is so nice to you. He's staying right by your side even though it's just a burn. I've seen many partners telling the patient to just rinse it with water, apply some ointment, and call it a day."Sabrina's ears went red.Showing some frustration at being misunderstood despite the countless explanations, along with a subtle hint of embarrassment, she explained, "Oh, no, I'm single. He's my best friend's boyfriend, actually!"The nurse blinked, pausing her movements for a moment. She had a look of suspicion in her eyes. "I see. Your best friend must have the patience of a saint."Sabrina didn't hear her. "What were you saying?"The nurse lowered her gaze, the look on her face darkening. She could barely hide the d

The next day, I was woken up by the smell of something burning. When I opened my eyes, I heard Sabrina's panicked screams coming from the living room. "Ah! Help! Shane! Your pan caught on fire!"By the time I pulled the blanket off me and dashed outside, the kitchen was already filled with smoke.Sabrina was holding a frying pan on fire, and she frantically flung it into the sink. It only produced even more smoke.Shane's laptop was still running on the kitchen island, but the screen had turned dark.Shane never let anyone touch that laptop. Even when I offered to clear the cache for him, he'd say, "Don't touch it. I'll do it myself."My heart sank. After a quick check to make sure Sabrina didn't suffer any severe burns, I grabbed the fire extinguisher and rushed forward to put out the fire. While I was dealing with the fire, a few drops of hot oil splattered onto my arm. I drew a sharp breath in pain.Just then, Shane hurriedly arrived at the scene.Ignoring my own injuries,
