Chapter 2

Author: Bowl of Rice
When I returned to the villa, Eric's mother, Mabel White, had been waiting for me for a long time.

The moment she saw me, she came up to greet me. "Sylvia, you're back! You've gotten the results from your checkup at the hospital, right? I noticed your appetite hasn't been great these past few days, and your stomach looks a bit bloated. You must be... pregnant, right?"

I lowered my gaze and lied through my teeth. "No, I'm not pregnant, Mabel. The doctor said my stomach's a little upset. I just have mild indigestion."

Mabel had always treated me well. Now that I had made up my mind to get a divorce, there was no reason to let an elderly woman get her hopes up for nothing.

Visible disappointment flashed across Mabel's face, yet her tone with me remained gentle. "Oh... I see. It's okay. That's okay. Your health matters most. I'll ask Martha to stew you some soup to soothe your stomach and help with digestion."

"Thanks, Mabel."

Mabel seemed as though she wanted to tell me something else, but the villa door was pushed open once again. Eric? Hadn't he said he wasn't coming home tonight?

A pair of high heels appeared behind him, followed by a bright, striking face. It was Sabrina.

"Eric brought me home for dinner, Mrs. Grant, Sylvie. Surely you don't mind, do you?"

The smile on Mabel's face instantly froze. She shot daggers at Eric.

No matter how he messed around outside, as long as he kept it discreet, she could turn a blind eye. However, he shouldn't have brought his mistress home; that was a direct slap in my face.

"Eric, you..."

I hurried over and gently reassured Mabel. "Mabel, you aren't in the best of health. The doctor said you must avoid getting upset at all costs. It's just one meal."

Then, I turned around, looked at Eric and Sabrina, and curled my lips into a faint smile. "I don't mind at all. Could you please bring out two more sets of plates and silverware, Martha? Both of you arrived at the perfect time.

"Dinner's ready. Go wash your hands and take your seats."

My reaction must've been too calm because Eric arched his brow, as if he couldn't figure out what I was playing at.

Sabrina was all smiles at the dining table; she kept piling Eric's favorite food onto his plate, her voice sickeningly sweet. "Have some of this, Eric. You've been working so hard lately. Eat up!"

Eric didn't refuse. If anything, the corners of his lips curled into a smile as he picked up a piece of deboned fish and casually brought it to Sabrina's lips. "Here, have some too."

Sabrina chuckled coquettishly and ate it straight from his fork. Her eyes danced as she cast me a meaningful look.

Mabel's expression hardened, but she ultimately held her tongue. She merely set her plate down heavily with a soft clatter.

"I've had enough." Having said her piece, she hastily left the table

Without looking up, I continued to eat dinner at a leisurely pace.

The doctor had told me that morning that I had taken too many ovulation-inducing injections. My body was damaged and severely weakened.

I needed to eat properly during this period. If not, I might not even be able to make it onto the operating table for next week's abortion procedure.

Eric seemed thoroughly bored by my reaction, which was like a pool of stagnant water.

Noticing that Mabel had already left the table, he reached out and pulled Sabrina into his arms. "By the way, remember to sleep in the guest room tonight. Sabrina and I will take the master bedroom."

Sabrina lightly pounded his chest with her fist at that moment. Her cheeks burned, and her voice turned syrupy sweet. "Stop it, Eric! Don't talk about such embarrassing things in public…"

I lifted my gaze and responded, "Alright."

Then, I rose from my seat and continued, "I'm done. Enjoy your meal."

Master bedroom, guest bedroom—it was all the same to me; I could sleep anywhere.

Right now, as a pregnant woman, keeping a solid sleep schedule was my priority.

Yet, for some reason, an inexplicable anger began to simmer inside Eric. He abruptly shoved Sabrina away and strode up to me, blocking my path.

He seized my wrist and snapped, "Hold it right there! Who do you think you're giving an attitude to, Sylvia?"

Eric shifted his feet, as if he wanted to come forward but didn't dare to. He remained rooted to the spot, his fingers curling unconsciously as his intense gaze followed me. I took the initiative and walked up to him before stopping at a polite distance. "Can we talk?"He nodded and immediately followed after me. We casually found a cafe at the airport and sat down. Eric started, "I haven't seen you in three years, Sylvia. You've changed a lot."After hearing that, I raised my hand and ran my fingers through the short hair around my ear. "Yeah, my studies abroad were demanding, and it wasn't exactly convenient to wash my hair in the lab. Short hair is easier to manage. What about you? How have you been these past three years?" Eric's hands, resting on the table, balled into fists. Tears welled up in his eyes and almost spilled over when he gazed at me."I missed you so much these past three years." Those words seemed to open the floodgates. As if he was afraid I would get up

Sabrina gaped at Eric, as if she couldn't process his words. "You love me… You know you love me, Eric!" she muttered in utter disbelief. Without sparing her a second glance, he turned to his bodyguards, who were frozen in place at the door, and barked, "What are you waiting for? Didn't you hear me? Deliver her safely to Sundara and make sure she never comes back for the rest of her life!"His bodyguards no longer dared to hesitate. They stepped forward, hauled the limp Sabrina to her feet, and dragged her outside. "No—Eric, you can't do this to me!" she shrieked. Eric turned a deaf ear to her cries and curses behind him, staring blankly out the window. After what felt like an eternity, he murmured, "I have to find Sylvia. She can't abandon me..." His voice was so soft, as if he was trying to hypnotize himself. Yet, he would never be able to locate me. I had already taken a chartered flight abroad that night. After I was induced to deliver my baby due to excessive blood loss,

Just then, two light knocks sounded at the door. Sabrina cautiously walked in with a bowl of oatmeal. "You haven't eaten anything all night, Eric. Have some oatmeal. It's gentle on the stomach."She had everything figured out. I was out of the picture, the Grants were in complete disarray, and Eric was distraught. This was exactly when he needed someone to comfort him. As long as she seized this opportunity and stayed by his side, attending to him with gentle words and tenderness, she might be able to soften Eric's attitude and get him to agree to marry her. However, she had made things far too simple in her head, and she had clearly overestimated her place in Eric's heart. The moment Eric saw Sabrina's face, the anger he'd been bottling up abruptly overflowed. He knocked the bowl of oatmeal out of her hands and snarled, "Scram, you bitch! Why did you steal Sylvia's belongings, you thief? This is all your fault! You killed my baby!" The blood drained from her face, and the b

Eric realized what had happened in an instant. He clutched the box and dropped to his knees, stammering, "T-This can't be… Sylvia's pregnant? I didn't know... I had no idea that pushing her would…"He repeated himself, bawling his eyes out. Then, he took another close look at the fetus in the box. Its tiny hands and feet had already formed. A chill shot straight to the crown of his head. Before he could even scream, he toppled backward. "Eric!" "Mr. Grant!" Pandemonium broke out.The bodyguards and several attendants rushed over, scrambling to lift the unconscious Eric and haul him to a nearby couch. Someone pinched his philtrum to wake him, while others frantically called for an ambulance. Sabrina was scared out of her wits, utterly at a loss. Mrs. Grant had remained calm as she watched the scene unfold. Gradually, tears welled up in her eyes, and she murmured, "I'm so sorry, Clara. I failed to take care of your precious daughter. I won't even be able to look you in the

The air in the car seemed to freeze. Eric's Adam's apple bobbed, as though he were trying to suppress his anger. Moments later, he abruptly turned his head and glared at me viciously. "Because you asked for it! To be honest, when I first met you, I had a pretty good impression of you. However, had you not insisted that it was me or no one else back then, my mom would never have used her own life to blackmail me into marrying you!"I've truly had enough! I'm sick of having her control and arranging every little thing in my life. I want to be free. I told you that, but you said you didn't care; you were dead set on marrying me. So, don't blame me for treating you this poorly… "Because you brought this on yourself!" he bellowed in a single breath. Then, he slumped heavily back into his seat, panting. I took it all in quietly. I wasn't particularly surprised. I just found the whole thing absurd. I drank in his furious expression and sincerely apologized. "I'm sorry for wasting

I was caught off guard by Eric's sudden confrontation. What on earth was Eric so upset about?I used to behave like a madwoman, doing everything I could to find proof of his affairs, combing through the countless flirtatious messages on his phone, attempting to cut off every avenue through which he could come into contact with other women. At the time, he found me utterly repulsive. He berated me for being unreasonable and called me a lunatic. Wasn't this what he wanted? Eric was still dissatisfied, convinced that I was giving him an attitude. All of a sudden, I felt drained. I took a deep breath, broke free from Eric's hold, and responded apathetically, "I'm not giving you an attitude. I'm just tired, and I want to go back and get some rest." After taking a couple of steps, something hit me, and I turned back around. "I've signed the divorce agreement, Eric. I've left your copy exactly where it was. If you're free tomorrow, let's go to the courthouse and finalize the divorce.
