Chapter 3

作者: Bowl of Rice
I was caught off guard by Eric's sudden confrontation. What on earth was Eric so upset about?

I used to behave like a madwoman, doing everything I could to find proof of his affairs, combing through the countless flirtatious messages on his phone, attempting to cut off every avenue through which he could come into contact with other women.

At the time, he found me utterly repulsive. He berated me for being unreasonable and called me a lunatic. Wasn't this what he wanted?

Eric was still dissatisfied, convinced that I was giving him an attitude.

All of a sudden, I felt drained. I took a deep breath, broke free from Eric's hold, and responded apathetically, "I'm not giving you an attitude. I'm just tired, and I want to go back and get some rest."

After taking a couple of steps, something hit me, and I turned back around. "I've signed the divorce agreement, Eric. I've left your copy exactly where it was. If you're free tomorrow, let's go to the courthouse and finalize the divorce."

As soon as the words rolled off my tongue, the anger on Eric's face froze for a moment.

The very next second, he sneered. "Why are you pretending to be magnanimous all of a sudden? You're still pissed off, aren't you? However, let me make one thing clear—divorce isn't a game.

"Once you cool off and regret it, even if you come crawling back to me, don't expect me to take you in. My patience has its limits."

With that, he looked at me calmly.

I remembered how, when we had first gotten married, I used to threaten Eric with divorce all the time. In the end, after he dragged me to the courthouse, I was the one who ended up in tears, begging him to take me home.

I'd been such a fool. Eric didn't love me. Divorce was a reward, not a punishment for him.

"Ok," I responded to acknowledge I had heard him and quietly returned to the guest room.

The master bedroom was on the second floor, while most of the guest rooms were on the third floor.

I wanted to stay out of each other's hair.

I had no idea what had gotten into Eric tonight. He had told me that he'd take the master bedroom, but he led Sabrina into the guest room right next to mine.

Sabrina's giggles, hushed sweet nothings, gasps, and moans drifted into my ears in fits and starts.

I was pregnant and an exceptionally light sleeper to begin with. I was kept awake the entire night by the noise.

Strangely enough, when I heard those sounds now, my heart no longer ached. I was simply annoyed by the disturbance.

I belatedly realized that I no longer loved Eric.

…

While we were having breakfast the following morning, Eric took one look at the dark circles under my eyes and smirked triumphantly. "Well? A night without sleep ought to have cleared your head. Are you still going to the courthouse to file for divorce?"

I looked up from my phone and nodded. "Yeah, I am. The driver's already waiting outside. I made an appointment for 9:00 am. We can leave as soon as you finish breakfast.

"It won't take much of your time—about 20 minutes tops. By the way, I haven't informed Mrs. Grant. Her health isn't the best, and I'm afraid she won't be able to handle it all at once. Give it some time and break it to her when the moment's right."

Eric chuckled dryly, his voice laced with venom. "You sure switch gears fast; you're already calling her 'Mrs. Grant." How ungrateful… Sylvia Wright, if my mom hadn't threatened to take her own life back then, I wouldn't have spared you a second glance, let alone married you!"

My knuckles turned white, but I didn't want to pick a fight, so I kept my head down and remained quiet.

My reaction, or lack thereof, made Eric feel as though he'd punched a pile of cotton. It only fueled his inexplicable anger.

He ditched his breakfast and sprang to his feet. "Fine. Aren't you in such a rush to get divorced? Let's go!"

Silence stretched across the back seat for a moment.

Eric abruptly turned around and jeered. "Too bad Sabrina is still asleep and couldn't join us. If not, after finalizing our divorce, I could've proposed to her right then and there. She's been with me for so many years; it's high time I gave her a place in my life."

I could tell he was deliberately attempting to get a reaction out of me, so I refused to take the bait. In fact, I turned to him and asked, "Since we're getting divorced, be honest with me, Eric, why have you hated me so much all these years?"

Eric shifted his feet, as if he wanted to come forward but didn't dare to. He remained rooted to the spot, his fingers curling unconsciously as his intense gaze followed me. I took the initiative and walked up to him before stopping at a polite distance. "Can we talk?"He nodded and immediately followed after me. We casually found a cafe at the airport and sat down. Eric started, "I haven't seen you in three years, Sylvia. You've changed a lot."After hearing that, I raised my hand and ran my fingers through the short hair around my ear. "Yeah, my studies abroad were demanding, and it wasn't exactly convenient to wash my hair in the lab. Short hair is easier to manage. What about you? How have you been these past three years?" Eric's hands, resting on the table, balled into fists. Tears welled up in his eyes and almost spilled over when he gazed at me."I missed you so much these past three years." Those words seemed to open the floodgates. As if he was afraid I would get up

Sabrina gaped at Eric, as if she couldn't process his words. "You love me… You know you love me, Eric!" she muttered in utter disbelief. Without sparing her a second glance, he turned to his bodyguards, who were frozen in place at the door, and barked, "What are you waiting for? Didn't you hear me? Deliver her safely to Sundara and make sure she never comes back for the rest of her life!"His bodyguards no longer dared to hesitate. They stepped forward, hauled the limp Sabrina to her feet, and dragged her outside. "No—Eric, you can't do this to me!" she shrieked. Eric turned a deaf ear to her cries and curses behind him, staring blankly out the window. After what felt like an eternity, he murmured, "I have to find Sylvia. She can't abandon me..." His voice was so soft, as if he was trying to hypnotize himself. Yet, he would never be able to locate me. I had already taken a chartered flight abroad that night. After I was induced to deliver my baby due to excessive blood loss,

Just then, two light knocks sounded at the door. Sabrina cautiously walked in with a bowl of oatmeal. "You haven't eaten anything all night, Eric. Have some oatmeal. It's gentle on the stomach."She had everything figured out. I was out of the picture, the Grants were in complete disarray, and Eric was distraught. This was exactly when he needed someone to comfort him. As long as she seized this opportunity and stayed by his side, attending to him with gentle words and tenderness, she might be able to soften Eric's attitude and get him to agree to marry her. However, she had made things far too simple in her head, and she had clearly overestimated her place in Eric's heart. The moment Eric saw Sabrina's face, the anger he'd been bottling up abruptly overflowed. He knocked the bowl of oatmeal out of her hands and snarled, "Scram, you bitch! Why did you steal Sylvia's belongings, you thief? This is all your fault! You killed my baby!" The blood drained from her face, and the b

Eric realized what had happened in an instant. He clutched the box and dropped to his knees, stammering, "T-This can't be… Sylvia's pregnant? I didn't know... I had no idea that pushing her would…"He repeated himself, bawling his eyes out. Then, he took another close look at the fetus in the box. Its tiny hands and feet had already formed. A chill shot straight to the crown of his head. Before he could even scream, he toppled backward. "Eric!" "Mr. Grant!" Pandemonium broke out.The bodyguards and several attendants rushed over, scrambling to lift the unconscious Eric and haul him to a nearby couch. Someone pinched his philtrum to wake him, while others frantically called for an ambulance. Sabrina was scared out of her wits, utterly at a loss. Mrs. Grant had remained calm as she watched the scene unfold. Gradually, tears welled up in her eyes, and she murmured, "I'm so sorry, Clara. I failed to take care of your precious daughter. I won't even be able to look you in the

The air in the car seemed to freeze. Eric's Adam's apple bobbed, as though he were trying to suppress his anger. Moments later, he abruptly turned his head and glared at me viciously. "Because you asked for it! To be honest, when I first met you, I had a pretty good impression of you. However, had you not insisted that it was me or no one else back then, my mom would never have used her own life to blackmail me into marrying you!"I've truly had enough! I'm sick of having her control and arranging every little thing in my life. I want to be free. I told you that, but you said you didn't care; you were dead set on marrying me. So, don't blame me for treating you this poorly… "Because you brought this on yourself!" he bellowed in a single breath. Then, he slumped heavily back into his seat, panting. I took it all in quietly. I wasn't particularly surprised. I just found the whole thing absurd. I drank in his furious expression and sincerely apologized. "I'm sorry for wasting
