Chapter 1

Half an hour later, the office door finally swung open. My husband Eric Grant's new secretary straightened her rumpled skirt, snorted at me, and sashayed away.

I'd been at the receiving end of such humiliation innumerable times.

There was a time when it would have broken my heart and brought me to tears. Now, I had gotten used to it.

I pushed the door open.

Eric heard my footsteps. He turned around, and as soon as he realized it was me, his brows instinctively drew together. "What are you doing back here again? Didn't I tell you not to come looking for me at the office unless it's important?"

I hesitated. The very next second, I shoved the prenatal checkup report in my hand into my bag and said, "Let's get a divorce, Eric."

Eric's fingers, which were holding a cigarette, froze in midair. He sneered and looked at me. "What? Can't take it anymore? You were the one who used every trick in the book to marry me back then."

As soon as his words fell, his phone, which was resting on the desk, buzzed. It was my adopted sister, Sabrina Wright.

Eric took one look at it, made no effort to hide it from me, and asked affectionately, "You miss me already?"

"Of course. I love you the most. You're my sweetheart."

"You're back in town? Alright, see you in a bit."

A woman's coquettish laughter drifted through the other end of the phone.

Several minutes later, Eric ended the call, and his gaze returned to me. He tilted his chin and nodded toward another corner of the desk. "The divorce agreement is right there. I've already signed it. If you want to sign it, go ahead. Either way, this isn't the first or second time you've threatened to divorce me all these years."

Eric rose to his feet, casually grabbed his coat from the back of his chair, and walked toward the door.

He pondered for a moment before stopping in his tracks and adding, "By the way, don't wait up for me tonight. Save yourself the trouble of playing the dutiful wife. Whenever my mother sees you, she keeps nagging me about it."

The moment those words left his lips, he pulled the door open and walked out without the slightest hesitation.

After being humiliated and degraded by Eric, I should have collapsed onto the floor and burst into tears. Yet, strangely enough, my eyes were dry, and I couldn't shed a single tear.

I approached Eric's desk and pulled out the divorce agreement. I flipped to the last page. Eric's name was signed boldly.

I shook my head and let out a self-deprecating chuckle. I couldn't be bothered to read the terms on the front pages. The division of assets, compensation for emotional distress... None of it mattered to me anymore.

I pulled out a pen from the holder and carefully signed my name. Then, I took a copy of the divorce agreement with me.

After stepping outside the office building, I dug out the prenatal checkup report from my pocket. I could make out the faint shadow of a tiny gestational sac on the grainy black-and-white scan.

I wanted to abort it. I didn't want to hold on to Eric's heart, and I didn't want his child either. My child shouldn't have a father like him.

Eric shifted his feet, as if he wanted to come forward but didn't dare to. He remained rooted to the spot, his fingers curling unconsciously as his intense gaze followed me. I took the initiative and walked up to him before stopping at a polite distance. "Can we talk?"He nodded and immediately followed after me. We casually found a cafe at the airport and sat down. Eric started, "I haven't seen you in three years, Sylvia. You've changed a lot."After hearing that, I raised my hand and ran my fingers through the short hair around my ear. "Yeah, my studies abroad were demanding, and it wasn't exactly convenient to wash my hair in the lab. Short hair is easier to manage. What about you? How have you been these past three years?" Eric's hands, resting on the table, balled into fists. Tears welled up in his eyes and almost spilled over when he gazed at me."I missed you so much these past three years." Those words seemed to open the floodgates. As if he was afraid I would get up

Sabrina gaped at Eric, as if she couldn't process his words. "You love me… You know you love me, Eric!" she muttered in utter disbelief. Without sparing her a second glance, he turned to his bodyguards, who were frozen in place at the door, and barked, "What are you waiting for? Didn't you hear me? Deliver her safely to Sundara and make sure she never comes back for the rest of her life!"His bodyguards no longer dared to hesitate. They stepped forward, hauled the limp Sabrina to her feet, and dragged her outside. "No—Eric, you can't do this to me!" she shrieked. Eric turned a deaf ear to her cries and curses behind him, staring blankly out the window. After what felt like an eternity, he murmured, "I have to find Sylvia. She can't abandon me..." His voice was so soft, as if he was trying to hypnotize himself. Yet, he would never be able to locate me. I had already taken a chartered flight abroad that night. After I was induced to deliver my baby due to excessive blood loss,

Just then, two light knocks sounded at the door. Sabrina cautiously walked in with a bowl of oatmeal. "You haven't eaten anything all night, Eric. Have some oatmeal. It's gentle on the stomach."She had everything figured out. I was out of the picture, the Grants were in complete disarray, and Eric was distraught. This was exactly when he needed someone to comfort him. As long as she seized this opportunity and stayed by his side, attending to him with gentle words and tenderness, she might be able to soften Eric's attitude and get him to agree to marry her. However, she had made things far too simple in her head, and she had clearly overestimated her place in Eric's heart. The moment Eric saw Sabrina's face, the anger he'd been bottling up abruptly overflowed. He knocked the bowl of oatmeal out of her hands and snarled, "Scram, you bitch! Why did you steal Sylvia's belongings, you thief? This is all your fault! You killed my baby!" The blood drained from her face, and the b

Eric realized what had happened in an instant. He clutched the box and dropped to his knees, stammering, "T-This can't be… Sylvia's pregnant? I didn't know... I had no idea that pushing her would…"He repeated himself, bawling his eyes out. Then, he took another close look at the fetus in the box. Its tiny hands and feet had already formed. A chill shot straight to the crown of his head. Before he could even scream, he toppled backward. "Eric!" "Mr. Grant!" Pandemonium broke out.The bodyguards and several attendants rushed over, scrambling to lift the unconscious Eric and haul him to a nearby couch. Someone pinched his philtrum to wake him, while others frantically called for an ambulance. Sabrina was scared out of her wits, utterly at a loss. Mrs. Grant had remained calm as she watched the scene unfold. Gradually, tears welled up in her eyes, and she murmured, "I'm so sorry, Clara. I failed to take care of your precious daughter. I won't even be able to look you in the

The air in the car seemed to freeze. Eric's Adam's apple bobbed, as though he were trying to suppress his anger. Moments later, he abruptly turned his head and glared at me viciously. "Because you asked for it! To be honest, when I first met you, I had a pretty good impression of you. However, had you not insisted that it was me or no one else back then, my mom would never have used her own life to blackmail me into marrying you!"I've truly had enough! I'm sick of having her control and arranging every little thing in my life. I want to be free. I told you that, but you said you didn't care; you were dead set on marrying me. So, don't blame me for treating you this poorly… "Because you brought this on yourself!" he bellowed in a single breath. Then, he slumped heavily back into his seat, panting. I took it all in quietly. I wasn't particularly surprised. I just found the whole thing absurd. I drank in his furious expression and sincerely apologized. "I'm sorry for wasting

I was caught off guard by Eric's sudden confrontation. What on earth was Eric so upset about?I used to behave like a madwoman, doing everything I could to find proof of his affairs, combing through the countless flirtatious messages on his phone, attempting to cut off every avenue through which he could come into contact with other women. At the time, he found me utterly repulsive. He berated me for being unreasonable and called me a lunatic. Wasn't this what he wanted? Eric was still dissatisfied, convinced that I was giving him an attitude. All of a sudden, I felt drained. I took a deep breath, broke free from Eric's hold, and responded apathetically, "I'm not giving you an attitude. I'm just tired, and I want to go back and get some rest." After taking a couple of steps, something hit me, and I turned back around. "I've signed the divorce agreement, Eric. I've left your copy exactly where it was. If you're free tomorrow, let's go to the courthouse and finalize the divorce.
