EVELYN

The doctor had come by early that morning to tell me that I could go home today, and I had never been happier to hear anything in my life. My head still hurt when I turned too quickly, and my ribs ached whenever I took a deep breath, but I was tired of the smell of medicine and the sound of machines beeping all night. Paige was helping me pack, folding my clothes into the small bag she had brought from my apartment. She kept telling me to sit down and let her do it.

EVELYN“I accept your apology, Kayda,” I said quietly. “You are forgiven.”The words came out calmer than I felt, and I watched her face as I said them. She did not thank me or even nod. She simply kept her eyes on mine, and I could see the resentment burning behind them like a coal that refused to go out.Mrs. Williams hurried forward and wrapped an arm around her daughter, helping her back to her feet. Kayda struggled to find her balance and hissed through her teeth when she put weight on her sprained ankle. She snatched up her crutches with shaking hands and stood there, breathing hard, her face pale and damp with sweat. I looked away because I did not want her to catch me watching her, though the memory of her wincing on that cold floor stayed with me.Once she was steady, Mr. Williams straightened his jacket and turned to me.“Mrs. Sullivan, please send my daughter your bank details so she can make the settlement payment,” he said in the same flat voice he had used all morning. “

EVELYN I had expected some kind of fight from him. A man like Mr. Williams, with his cold face and expensive suit, did not look like someone who would let strangers demand a hundred thousand dollars from his daughter and then agree without a word of protest. I had been bracing myself for threats or insults, or at least a long speech about how his family would never be pushed around. Instead, he stood there calmly, as if I had asked him to sign a simple form, and that frightened me more. Kayda, however, was not ready to give up. “Dad, you can’t be serious,” she said, her voice shaking so badly that the words came out in pieces. “A hundred thousand dollars, and on top of that, I have to kneel to her like a servant? She is the one who should be apologizing to me. Look at my ankle.” “I told you yesterday that you would kneel if that was what it took,” Mr. Williams said, turning his head slowly toward her. “I said it to your face, Kayda. I don’t understand why you’re acting as though

EVELYN I was about to step in and calm things down between Paige and Kayda when the door swung open, and everyone in the room turned toward it. A man who looked to be in his fifties walked in first, tall and straight-backed, with a face as cold as ice and eyes that moved over the room as if he were taking stock of everything inside it. A beautiful, mature-looking woman followed close behind him, slightly out of breath, as if she had hurried down the corridor to keep up with him. I had no idea who they were, but I felt the atmosphere in the room change the moment they entered. Kayda’s face went completely stiff. The anger she had been holding a second earlier drained away, and what replaced it looked a lot like fear. Her hands tightened around the crutches, and she took a small step back, the rubber tips scraping against the floor. Then I looked at the man again, and something clicked in my mind. His face was older now, with deep lines around his mouth, but I recognized him. I had

KAYDA It had taken everything in me to leave my room and come to Evelyn’s door, and every step on those crutches felt like a punishment for what I was about to do. I had told myself I would never lower myself to apologize to her, not for anything in the world, but I had run out of choices. The twenty-four hours my father had given me were up. I had spent the entire night staring at the ceiling, trying to find a way to handle the situation without going through the humiliation of apologizing, but I hadn’t found one. Now, I had come here while my parents waited in my room for the result. Swallowing my pride felt like swallowing glass, and yet I had done it, smiling, speaking softly, and keeping my eyes wet, only to have everything ruined by one person who refused to mind her own business. Her friend, whatever her name was, Parger or Paige or something like that, had been standing next to Evelyn like a guard dog since I walked in. If she had just kept quiet, I would have finished my

EVELYN“That is a very nice speech, Kayda,” I said, and the words came out of my mouth before I had even decided to say them. “But what are you up to this time?” Kayda blinked at me, and for a second, I thought I saw something flash across her face, though it disappeared so quickly that I could not tell what it was. “I’m not up to anything,” she said quietly. “I just realized that I did something wrong, and I want to make amends. That’s all this is.” I did not believe a single word of it. I had heard her say sweet things before, and I knew how easily they could be turned into a weapon, so I kept my back straight and my eyes on her face. Then my mind drifted to the police report I had filed the morning after the gala, and a small piece of the puzzle clicked into place. Kayda had never cared about my forgiveness in all the years we had known each other, so why would she suddenly walk into my room on crutches and beg for it unless she was afraid of something? “I heard you,” I said slo

She kept telling me to sit down and let her do it. “I can fold a shirt, Paige,” I said, though I was moving slowly. “I’m not made of glass.” “You fell down a staircase two days ago. You’re basically made of glass right now,” she said, taking the shirt from my hands. “Sit and let me finish this before the nurse comes with your papers.” I had just lowered myself onto the edge of the bed when the door pushed open and someone came in without knocking. I heard the soft thud of crutches against the floor before I looked up and saw Kayda standing in the middle of my
