Chapter 1

"Seraphina, it's just a crown. Don't throw a tantrum at a time like this," said my destined mate, Cassian Wolfe.

I looked down at my feet, where the Moon Goddess' crown symbolizing one's status as Luna lay in pieces.

The mate ring that Cassian was supposed to put on my finger was currently on Daphne's ring finger.

After a long while, Cassian finally let go of a trembling Daphne, picked up his cloak, and walked toward me.

"Daphne didn't mean it. Put this cloak on while I get someone to clean up the mess. The bonding ceremony will proceed as usual."

I took half a step back and avoided his hands.

Cassian frowned and lowered his voice. "Envoys from various packs are here. Anything you have to say can wait until after the bonding ceremony is over."

I simply found those familiar words absurd.

During the bonding ceremony in my past life, Daphne similarly shattered my crown and snatched away my ring. Yet, Cassian had claimed that she suffered from severe separation anxiety and requested that I be tolerant of her.

For Cassian and my unborn pup's sake, I let the incident slide.

From that day onward, Daphne frequently barged into our bedroom and interrupted every one-on-one moment I had with Cassian.

As long as I approached him, she would kick up a fuss, throw objects around, and even hurt herself.

In the end, I was always the one asked to make concessions.

Things continued up until the day I was set to go into labor. I lay in the healer's hut, in desperate need of Cassian's blood to suppress the toxins from wolfsbane.

When Cassian heard Daphne crying outside the door for him not to abandon her, he still chose to push my hand away.

He claimed that he would be back soon.

However, up until the moment my pup stopped breathing and my body went cold, the door never opened again.

I felt a faint tremor coming from my abdomen.

It was my pup, still alive.

I instinctively lifted a hand to shield my still-flat abdomen.

"Cassian, let's call off the bonding ceremony," I said.

Surprise flashed through his eyes.

He handed his cloak to an attendant behind him, then asked, "Seraphina Lovell, what nonsense are you spouting?"

I met his gaze directly. "I won't accept your mating bite, nor will I become your Luna. Our relationship ends here."

The attendees around us immediately started murmuring to each other.

Cassian grabbed my wrist and said in a low voice, "The envoys and elders of various packs are all waiting for us. Do you know how embarrassing it'll be for the Gale Pack if you cancel the bonding ceremony now?"

In Cassian's eyes, every one of Daphne's mistakes was just an excusable accident.

On the other hand, when I refused the bonding ceremony out of grievance, it was treated as a deliberate attempt to embarrass the pack.

Before I could break out of Cassian's grasp, Daphne walked up to us while clutching at her chest.

She exclaimed, "I'm sorry. I just couldn't control myself when I saw that Cassian was about to form a mate bond. Seraphina, you can punish me however you like, but please don't call off the ceremony because of me and put Cassian on the spot."

Her eyes were downcast, and she was breathing rapidly.

Cassian immediately let go of me and turned to steady her.

"Don't be afraid. I'm not abandoning you. It's just a crown that can be reforged any time. You can also keep the ring for now and return it to her when you've calmed down," he said gently and soothingly.

As I listened to him making decisions for us so casually, the last trace of warmth I held for him vanished completely.

Seeing the situation, Cassian's mother, Anna Crowe, stood up as well.

She declared, "Daphne's lived away from the pack since childhood and has endured much suffering. It's not her fault that she has separation anxiety. As long as you're willing to complete the bonding ceremony, we'll prepare the crown, ring, and celebration again. You won't be deprived of any of the honors of becoming Luna."

Cassian turned to gaze coldly at me.

"You'll have to take care of the entire pack after becoming Luna. If you can't even tolerate my adopted younger sister, how do you expect to win the trust and respect of our pack?"

In my past life, they demanded my tolerance by bringing up the responsibilities of a Luna and bought my silence with their promises of so-called honor.

I had assumed that so long as I was tolerant enough, Cassian would eventually notice my grievances.

But in the end, all I received in return was poisoning at Daphne's hands, Cassian's abandonment, and a tragic end for both me and my pup.

I walked straight toward the priest standing beneath the Moon Goddess' statue without any further explanation.

"Please stop the bonding ceremony. I will no longer become Cassian's Luna."

Cassian waved for his attendants to see the guests out, then ordered someone to bring me my favorite berry-flavored water.

"I know that your emotions are unstable due to your pregnancy, so I'll just pretend that today's events never happened," he said.

Instead of taking the out he offered, I simply asked, "If Daphne has another episode during the replacement bonding ceremony, who will you choose?"

Cassian replied without hesitation, "She's ill. Why do you have to compare yourself to her? Don't give me choices like these."

I pushed aside the berry-flavored water and turned to walk off the altar.

"Since she can't bear to be apart from you even for a moment, you might as well become her sole protector. I will see my pup safely into this world, but I don't want a destined mate like you anymore."

Several months later, the harsh winter gave way to spring. As the first rays of early spring sunlight shone down upon the snowy plains, the loud, powerful cry of a pup resounded throughout the Snowfield Pack.My pup—a healthy male—had safely arrived into the world. When the healer placed him into my arms, his eyes were still tightly shut, and his soft fingers clutched at my shirt lapel. My wolf let out a low growl in my consciousness.I leaned down to touch my forehead to my pup's."Welcome to the world," I told him.Outside the window, bells started ringing one after another throughout the pack. The situation within the Gale Pack also came to a head on that same spring day.Ryan got through the vetting process and officially became the new pack Alpha with the unanimous support of both the main council and the Council of Elders. He revoked all Cassian's past orders of merit and mansion rights. Stripped of his titles, Cassian was reduced to an outcast worse off than an ordinar

After the bonding ceremony was canceled, the High Elder immediately put a halt to the succession ceremony."The symbol of succession has been destroyed, and the Snowfield Pack's guarantee has not been received. Until the matter has been thoroughly investigated, Cassian may not assume the position of pack Alpha."Cassian, with a bitter expression on his face, attempted one last, desperate struggle. He said, "Although the symbol of succession has been destroyed, Seraphina is carrying my pup. As long as she returns to vouch for me, the Snowfield Pack will naturally continue to support me."Yet, no sooner had he said those words than a Snowfield Pack envoy stepped expressionlessly onto the altar and revealed a statement that I'd signed with my own hand."Seraphina has already rejected her destined bond with Cassian and, on behalf of the Snowfield Pack, withdrawn any and all support for Cassian. From now onward, the Gale Pack's succession dispute has nothing to do with the Snowfield Pa

Anna staggered two steps back at Cassian's words."Your bond's been severed?" she screeched. In order to sever a destined bond, the initiator had to suffer the agony of having their wolf torn from them. This meant that I had chosen to endure the torturous punishment over having anything more to do with Cassian."You jinx… You damn jinx!"Anna instantly changed her tune and slapped Daphne brutally across the face.Daphne cupped her cheek and stared at Anna in disbelief.Over all these years, Anna had always cared for Daphne as if the latter were her own daughter. No matter what Daphne did wrong, Anna would clean up her mess so long as she claimed that she'd had an episode. But now, only fury remained on Anna's once-kind face.Daphne began, "Mom—"Anna cut her off sharply. "Don't call me that! Do you have any idea what you've ruined? You've ruined my son's future! You've doomed our entire pack!"Daphne started wailing loudly and continued to fall back on her age-old excuse. "I

Before the previous Alpha of the Gale Pack, Henry Flint, passed away, he once met me in private. At that time, Cassian was just the Council of Elders' most favored candidate for the position of pack Alpha. His older brother, Ryan Thorne, had been exiled for years. However, Ryan had never given up on the position of pack Alpha, and there were still many elders who supported him within the Gale Pack. When Alpha Henry handed me the moonstone casket, he told me solemnly, "Cassian is too sentimental and thus easily swayed by others. This symbol of succession is my final endorsement of his right to the position of pack Alpha."Please give it to him once the two of you have completed the bonding ceremony. With this emblem, Ryan won't be able to contest his right of succession."In my past life, I honored Alpha Henry's trust in me.Not only did I give Cassian the symbol of succession, but I even asked my maternal pack to vouch for him and ensure that his position as pack Alpha was fully

After stomping on the crystal and breaking it into pieces, Daphne finally seemed to come back to her senses. She collapsed to the floor with her head in her hands and began to tremble violently, just as she had every time in the past.Big, fat tears rolled down her cheeks."Cassian… I'm sorry. I couldn't control myself again…"She reached out toward Cassian with practised ease, attempting to cling to his legs and pour out her grievances to him."I didn't do it on purpose… I was just afraid that Seraphina was attempting something else to make you kick me out of the pack."However, this time, she wasn't greeted by a warm embrace as she had hoped.Cassian looked down at the crystal shards on the floor, shattered beyond repair, and felt his blood slowly run cold. When Daphne's hand brushed against his pant leg, he took a visible step backward."Don't touch me."Daphne's eyes widened in shock."Cassian?"Cassian looked down at the crystal shards on the floor. He asked in a frig

On a snowy plain thousands of miles away from the Gale Pack, I stood alone at the edge of a towering cliff. As I gazed up at the full moon, I recited an ancient vow."I, Seraphina Lovell, hereby swear an oath to the Moon Goddess. I reject Cassian Wolfe as my destined mate. From this moment on, my life, loyalty, and future no longer belong to him."Moonlight abruptly shone down on me.I felt my destined bond to Cassian, which had not yet been solidified through a mate mark, being forcibly severed. My chest felt as if it'd been ripped apart with sharp claws, and blood rushed up my throat.Deep within my consciousness, my wolf let out a miserable, agonized howl. Yet, it still shielded my unborn pup from harm.It hurt terribly, but inwardly, I felt an unprecedented sense of freedom and release.Meanwhile, far away in the Gale Pack's temple, Cassian was experiencing backlash a hundred times worse than my own.His towering frame was curled up on the ground, convulsing from the anguis
