Chapter 3

Author: Fortune Abundant
A crowd gathered around and lifted me up.

I gasped for air, but it still felt like I was suffocating, just like in my past life.

My head throbbed as if it would explode, and the pain made me cry despite myself.

I had been given a second chance at life, yet I hadn't even been able to see my parents' faces. And now, it felt like I was about to die again.

Dazed and delirious, memories of the past flooded my mind.

Jasper and I had met through an arranged marriage. We found each other acceptable and got married.

I had never been in love before, but he was capable, handsome, and somehow, without me realizing, I had fallen for him.

After marriage, he was often busy with work and somewhat distant.

I didn't mind.

He had a sensitive stomach, so I researched nutrition and recipes, always squeezing in time to prepare his meals three times a day.

He said he was still young and didn't want children. I feared our families would blame him, so I shouldered the remarks myself.

He had obsessive tendencies and hated strangers entering the house. No matter how late I returned from work, I dragged my tired body to wash, iron, and tidy up the house for him.

By our fifth year of marriage, Jasper's attitude toward me had softened considerably, and he even mentioned wanting a child.

I thought I had finally melted his heart, and that our happiness would only grow from there.

But that same year, Ruby returned to work at the private hospital run by Jasper's family.

She added my contact, saying she was Jasper's ex-girlfriend. She claimed they had once been very close, but that it was all in the past. She'd urged me not to overthink it.

Yet she kept reaching out, recounting their shared history.

"Jasper's pretty good at peeling seafood, isn't he? When he first peeled for me, he'd always cut his fingers.

"I have a sensitive stomach, so I can't eat outside food. He even got a chef's certificate just for me. You have a husband who can cook—don't eat too much. Otherwise, at your age, and heavier than me, watch out he falls for me instead… Haha, just joking.

"Oh, do you get cramps during your period? I get terrible ones, and Jasper always massages me. He must have massaged you too, right?"

I had thought Jasper's coldness toward me was just his nature.

But after reading Ruby's messages, I realized he could go to such lengths for someone he truly loved.

I tried to tell myself it was all in the past.

Yet after Ruby appeared, when she was sick, he stayed by her side. When she traveled, he accompanied her. On her birthdays, he meticulously prepared gifts and celebrations.

I had never seen him show such care for anyone else.

I spent nights unable to sleep, plagued with suspicion, torn between wanting a divorce and being unable to let go.

I argued, fought, and tried to drag him back into our marriage.

But he grew increasingly resentful of me.

I jolted awake from a nightmare, realizing I had been rescued and admitted to the ICU.

Families of other patients came and went, but my parents were nowhere to be seen. They were out of town and didn't even know I was hospitalized.

As for Jasper, he was with Ruby. He didn't have time for me.

After surviving the critical first two days, I was moved to a regular ward. Only then did Jasper find time to see me.

I had nearly died, and yet he offered no concern—only blame.

"Out of jealousy, you actually drank pesticide. You're really reckless!"

Before, such words would have hurt me deeply. Now, I only found him infuriatingly unreasonable.

Through gritted teeth, I snapped, "I've told you more than once! It was your vengeful patient who poisoned me! Have you completely forgotten?"

Jasper glared with disgust.

"Even now, you're still lying! You've survived the danger, so get out of my hospital. People like you are bad luck!"

I wanted to hit him.

"Jasper, I suffered this much because of you. How can you treat me like this? Don't you have a conscience?"

"Keep making up stories!" He reached for me.

But before he could touch me, two police officers walked in.

"Dr. Flint, we just apprehended the criminal who tried to kill your wife. He admitted he was your patient, and due to a conflict with you, he targeted your wife, Maisie. Now, we need you and Maisie to cooperate with us in making a statement."

Jasper froze, stunned, his face a mask of shock as he looked at me.

The greasy sauce clung to Jasper's hair, face, and tailored clothes, dripping in sticky globs onto the pavement. The man who had always been the picture of fastidiousness—the immaculate Dr. Flint—stood publicly disgraced for the very first time.It was the middle of the evening rush. A crowd of onlookers had stopped to gawk, their whispers forming a hum of judgment around us.I expected his infamous pride to make him turn and flee.Instead, his face flushed a deep, mortified scarlet. He clenched his fists, then dropped to his knees with a heavy thud."Maisie," he choked out, "I know I was wrong. I regret all of it. To be honest, I always believed it was Ruby I loved. But the second you asked for a divorce, I realized… the person I have always truly loved is you."I looked down at his pathetic form and sneered. "So you only love whoever treats you the worst? Jasper, you're pathetic.""Call me pathetic. Throw food at me. I'll accept it all—as long as it means you might forgive me.

"You were right… it was all true." Jasper's voice was a hollow shell of its former arrogance. "When the hospital was shut down, Ruby went straight to Karl Clinton and became his mistress. I went to her place and found them together in bed. They laughed at me—called me a fool for being tricked by a fake psychiatric report."Ruby admitted everything. She left me because she thought I was poor. When her husband's family went bankrupt, she discovered I was a hospital director and decided to come back. So you were right all along. Ruby is just a vain, manipulative schemer."The perfect, innocent image of Ruby he had cherished had not just cracked—it had exploded. And the fact that she had chosen his mortal enemy, Karl, was a humiliation he couldn't process. I could hear the utter devastation in his voice. But I had no sympathy for his misery. "Have you signed the agreement?" I pressed, my tone icy. "When can you meet at the courthouse?"Silence.Just as I was about to hang up, his stra

"I'm not a judge or a cop. I don't need evidence. All I know is that Ruby is hurt, and she says you're the one who did it!""You just take her word for it?""Over yours? The proven liar who spins stories without a second thought? Maisie, I'm warning you: you will get online immediately and post that this was all a malicious fiction you created out of jealousy. You will clear Ruby's name and stop the public attacks. If you don't, I will divorce you. And don't you ever think you'll see me again."Jasper was issuing a threat, but all I felt was a cold, dark amusement.I had loved him too much before—so much that he actually believed the prospect of losing him could still frighten me.I pulled the divorce papers from the drawer and slid them across the table. "Then sign them."Jasper hadn't expected my immediate agreement. His brow furrowed in suspicion. "What game are you playing now, Maisie? I—"His phone rang, cutting him off.I raised an eyebrow. "You should get that. It's prob

The hospital had a total of three major medical incidents. One was when Jasper postponed a surgery to tend to Ruby, delaying treatment and causing a patient's death. The other two involved Ruby herself. The first, a misdiagnosis that led to a young man losing a kidney. The second, a medication overdose that killed an infant girl.Jasper had spent a fortune on PR to suppress both scandals.Beyond these two major incidents, Ruby had been involved in over a dozen medical disputes.Suddenly, the Flint family's private hospital was inundated with online criticism, especially targeting Ruby and Jasper.Patient traffic plummeted. Many inpatients requested transfers to other hospitals.Ruby came to me, tears streaming down her face."Maisie, if you want Jasper, I'll step aside. You're jealous because he's close to me, so I've kept my distance. Is that not enough? Do you need me dead to be happy?"A few of her colleagues, all medical staff, joined in scolding me."Ruby and Jasper wer

Due to my fragile condition, the police conducted their statements with Jasper and me in the hospital room. When the criminal had forced pesticide down my throat, all I knew was that he had a medical dispute with Jasper. Only now did the truth come out: The perpetrator's mother had a heart condition and needed surgery, and Jasper was her attending physician. But just before the operation, Ruby was in a car accident.Out of worry for Ruby, Jasper had postponed the surgery. As it turned out, Ruby had only suffered a minor scrape, but the delay triggered a heart attack in the criminal's mother, and she died. The criminal harbored a grudge against Jasper, yet had no way to take revenge, so he targeted me instead.I had always known how much Jasper cared about Ruby, but I had never imagined he would allow such absurd chaos to spiral from that concern.Once the police finished their statements, they left.Jasper coughed awkwardly and offered a rare apology."This time, you truly suf
