Chapter 3

Author: Sunward
I bit my lip hard, refusing to speak, but Melissa's nails dug deep into my flesh.

Wincing from the pain, I finally spat out, "Expensive stuff. The pricier, the better!"

Once she headed into the kitchen, I looked around the house, desperately trying to find a way to escape.

Before long, the doorbell rang. Elliot was standing at the door in a well-tailored casual suit, looking naive and youthful.

Melissa welcomed him in with a smile.

He put on a deep voice to thank her before finally noticing a whole extra person sitting in the room. "What the hell are you doing here?"

Melissa quickly explained on my behalf, "He's here to help me win you over. I figured he would know your tastes best."

Though disgust flashed in Elliot's eyes, he still forced a deeply moved expression. "Mel, you're so thoughtful."

Once we sat down, I didn't hold back, stuffing my face with air-freighted lobster and king crab.

Elliot, however, was frantically typing away on his phone until it suddenly rang loudly.

"Hello, Mom? Don't panic. What's wrong?

"What? I'm on my way."

After hanging up, he suddenly dropped to his knees right in front of me with a loud thud. "Dariel, Eddie needs another kidney transplant. You have to help him. You can't just watch him die!"

My mind went completely blank.

I remembered that after the previous surgery, the doctor said Eddie had recovered perfectly and wouldn't relapse.

"You're a match too. Why don't you donate yours?" I asked.

But Elliot acted as if he couldn't hear me. He repeatedly slammed his forehead against the floor. "Dariel, I'm begging you! Please save him."

Heartbroken by the sight, Melissa pulled him up from the floor and held him tightly in her arms.

Then, she glared at me with pure rage. "You're so selfish!"

With that, she dragged Elliot out of the room, though she didn't forget to order her bodyguards to keep a tight eye on me.

I was locked in a room on the third floor. No matter how hard I pounded on the door, it was useless.

Finding a heavy trophy, I smashed it against the window without hesitation.

As I looked down from the third story, my legs went weak. I shut my eyes tight and jumped.

But luck wasn't on my side.

I hit the ground hard, breaking several ribs. The pain was so agonizing I could barely breathe.

Just then, Melissa walked over.

Instinctively, I cried out for help, "T-Take me to the hospital."

But her voice was utterly frigid. "You're not going anywhere. You're staying right here to give Eddie your kidney."

I stared at her in disbelief, tears streaming down my face. "I only have one kidney left. If I give him this one, I'll die."

"Yeah, I know."

A cold emptiness washed over me. "And this is your way of making it up to me?"

"I'm sorry. I can't bear to see Elliot sad. Just consider it another thing I owe you."

I lay trapped in that bed for several days. While my physical injuries slowly improved, my life was ticking away.

Waiting around just to die filled me with absolute despair.

Five days later, Elliot walked into my room alone. Seeing me pinned helplessly to the bed, he burst into a cruel laugh.

"Dariel, since you're about to die anyway, I might as well tell you the truth. The person who needs the kidney is actually someone Eddie hit with his car. Quite a coincidence, isn't it? They just happen to be a perfect match for you."

My tears fell uncontrollably. "Haven't I treated you guys well since we were kids? Why are you doing this to me?"

He glared back at me viciously. "You can blame Melissa for that. If she were actually a cripple, I would've let you have her. Too bad she isn't. So, I want them both!"

I closed my eyes in deep sorrow.

Elliot reached over and unbuckled my restraints.

I got up and followed slowly behind him.

The moment we reached the doorway, I shoved him out and slammed the door shut, locking it instantly.

Picking up the gasoline I had hidden by the bed, I poured it all over the floor and struck a match, setting everything ablaze.

Elliot banged frantically against the door from the outside. "What are you doing? You can't die! I'm calling Melissa right now!"

My detached voice echoed from inside the room. "I've already called the cops. If you don't want Melissa to find out you two have been playing her, you'd better pray I burn to ashes!"

Sure enough, the noise outside stopped instantly.

Standing in the middle of the raging flames, I threw my head back and laughed out loud.

Finally, I was going to be free.

Goodbye to this world that was never kind to me.

I scoffed. "He's always been that way. I told you so from the start."Melissa suddenly laughed, her voice tinged with madness."Sarah sent me the videos of the two of them sleeping together. At first, I convinced myself they were fake. Elliot was supposed to be this innocent young man. There was no way he could do something like that."But then, I set up Grandpa's chess endgame and asked him how he had cracked it back then. That's when I found out he doesn't even know how to play chess!"She grabbed my shoulders tightly, her emotions boiling over. "It was you, wasn't it? I went to your parents. They tried to deny it at first, but after I had my men break their bones, they finally confessed that you were the one who played chess with my grandpa."Since Elliot loves sleeping around so much, I shipped him off to a slum abroad. There are plenty of desperate women waiting for men out there."Dariel, I destroyed everyone who ever treated you like garbage. Are you happy now? Let's start

Wright Group's stock took a nosedive for several consecutive days.Even Melissa's newly established business in Seabrook suffered a series of heavy blows.I only then realized that Regina was behind all of it.The high-profile clients she had brought to me for treatment were actually power players from Jullerton. Among them were the Wright family's bitter rivals and others who had been waiting for a chance to tear the Wrights down and claim a piece of the pie.Regina had simply mentioned to them that Melissa had a vendetta against me—their life savior—and they immediately joined forces to take action. In the past, none of them could have taken on the Wright family alone, but now they were united because of me. With Regina backing them in the shadows, the Wright family stood no chance.A while later, Regina walked in with a smirk on her face.Along with the news that the Wright family was on the brink of bankruptcy, she dropped another bombshell that left me stunned."The victim

Grandpa also passed down several of our family's closely guarded secret techniques to me.Before long, Regina started bringing all kinds of clients to our door, each one incredibly wealthy and influential. Some suffered from sensitive conditions they couldn't risk the public finding out about. Others were genuinely terminal and came to us as a desperate last resort.Wearing a medical mask, I personally administered the acupuncture treatments under Grandpa's careful guidance. To my amazement, they paid astronomical amounts for their care. In just a single month, I managed to rake in over ten million dollars.Grandpa insisted on transferring every cent into my account, telling me it was the financial security he wanted me to have for the rest of my life. One evening, I took off my mask and was about to close up shop to head back to the mountain estate.Suddenly, the door was pushed open, and Regina walked in with someone trailing right behind her.I took one look at her guest, an

"You sure know how to enjoy someone else's misery," I commented."Oh, come on! Watching her get her hopes up over and over again, only to have them crushed? I couldn't be happier. She deserves every bit of it!"The woman talking was Regina Herring, the heiress of Corvanta's most powerful elite family.Grandpa had saved her life. She was born sickly and frail, and her family spent years traveling the world seeking medical treatment, but almost every doctor told them she wouldn't live past 16.When she was 15 and at her weakest, she went to Jullerton. She said her final wish was to see the ocean and gather a seashell with her own hands to be buried with, so she could listen to the sound of the sea forever. But right when she finally found the most beautiful shell, Melissa—who was also 15 at the time—snatched it from her hand and threw it back into the ocean."What are you doing? Why did you throw my seashell?"Melissa had scoffed with utter disdain. "I have no idea why my dad wan

"Did you find… a body?" Melissa asked. She didn't even notice how violently her voice was trembling."No. Our preliminary assessment shows that the fire started in that room on the third floor. There was also a natural gas leak in the house, which triggered an explosion when it met the sparks, and that's why the place burned down so completely," the fire captain replied.Melissa completely tuned out the rest of his explanation. The moment she heard the word "no", a massive weight lifted off her chest. She took Elliot's hand. "Elliot, you're hurt too. Let's get you to the hospital."A flash of pure malice crossed Elliot's eyes.He hadn't expected me to pull off a fake-death escape plot right under his nose.At the hospital, while Melissa was waiting outside the consultation room for Elliot, a bodyguard rushed up to her."Ms. Wright, we found out a fishing boat slipped out of the harbor in the middle of the night. Someone spotted a man covered in burn injuries boarding it. We sus

By the time Melissa rushed back to the villa, all that remained was a wasteland of scorched earth. The entire house had been burned to a shell. She stood there, frozen, looking completely hollowed out.She didn't understand. Elliot was right there by her side, holding her tightly, yet her heart felt utterly empty. For the first time, she found his embrace suffocating and instinctively pushed him away. After calling over her bodyguards, she demanded coldly, "Where were you all when this happened? Why didn't you put the fire out immediately?""We're sorry, Ms. Wright. Mr. Elliot—"Elliot's heart skipped a beat. He had intentionally dismissed the bodyguards earlier because he wanted to slip away with me on his own.He knew how smart I was and that I would eventually figure out that the kidney transplant for Eddie was a sham.If I exposed him, even if Melissa didn't believe it initially, a simple investigation would reveal the truth. He couldn't afford to take that gamble, so he
