Chapter 3

Penulis: Unbridled Wild Dog
The sudden light made my eyes sting, and when my vision finally cleared, Wyatt's handsome but subtly twisted face was the first thing I saw.

His cheeks were still flushed, and his clothes were a wrinkled mess—the dead giveaway of what he and Celia had just been up to.

I looked at him pleadingly, hoping he would pull me out.

But Wyatt didn't seem surprised that I was awake. He merely studied me with pure, unadulterated contempt.

"God, you look pathetic. You're about to be buried alive. Celia's busy handling your funeral arrangements, so I figured I'd keep you company for a little while.

"Five years ago, your mother found out who I really was. To make sure nothing stood in your way, she drove my mother to her death and had Dad cut me out of the Mercer family. And that still wasn't enough for her, was it? You even stole my fiancee! Emilia was supposed to be my wife!

"You've been married to her for five years, and she's been abusing you for all that time, but somehow you still wouldn't divorce her. I had no choice but to let Celia pursue you instead, and you were stupid enough to fall for her.

"Weren't you hoping to go abroad with Celia and marry her? You stole my marriage, so it was only fair I steal yours. Your mother finally kicked the bucket. I tampered with the drug you took to fake your death. Once they bury you, you'll be awake for every second of it and feel yourself die.

"The day you take your last breath is the exact day I marry Celia."

Every single word out of his mouth was a knife, and with each sentence, my heart turned to ice.

The fragile hope that had just flared up inside me was brutally snuffed out.

Wyatt's lips curved, and he looked almost pleased with himself.

He took the food and water that had been placed in the coffin, then said casually, "You're going to die anyway, so there's no point wasting these on you. I'll leave the oxygen tank, though. I want you to last a few more days. It's just a shame you won't be able to make it to our wedding."

The lid slammed shut again, swallowing the last sliver of light.

I dug my fingertips deep into the rough wooden boards, pressing so hard that my fingernails felt ready to snap off.

But my strength had drained out of me. My eyelids grew unbearably heavy, and I blacked out.

When I finally came to, I was greeted by a cacophony of voices from the outside world.

My funeral had begun.

Guests were mingling, exchanging pleasantries, and laughing, yet not a single soul out there was actually mourning my "death."

"The Mercer family's second son finally bit the dust. Word is that Emilia had beaten him half to death, but he still refused to sign the divorce papers because he didn't want to lose his place in the family."

"He had it coming. He stole his brother's fiancee, didn't he? Wyatt is way better looking and twice as capable. If it hadn't been for that whole bastard scandal coming to light, Elliot wouldn't have stood a chance at taking his place."

"Exactly. He even drugged Emilia just to force her into that marriage. Talk about having zero shame. No wonder she aborted their kid the second they got hitched. I bet he didn't see that coming. And look at him now. He's dead and buried, yet Emilia wouldn't even deign to show her face at the funeral."

"Wyatt's the one who hit the jackpot. Sure, things were rough for him five years ago, but now that his brother is dead, the Mercers will have no choice but to name him heir. Plus, he's marrying the sole heiress of Ashford Group next week. Let's see who dares call him a bastard after that."

On and on they went, picking apart my life and marriage and dragging my name through the dirt, never knowing the man in the casket was still alive, counting down his final hours in despair.

The pastor completed the last prayer, and the order was given to lower the casket.

I struggled with everything I had, feeling every second tick away, but no one was coming to save me.

I felt them carry me toward the plot. Right before they lowered me into the earth, I heard Celia lean in close against the casket.

With much difficulty, I forced myself to mutter, "Help… me."

Wyatt was caught between hysterical tears and manic laughter, looking completely unhinged as he glared at Celia."You can call me cold-blooded all you want, Celia, but you're the last person on earth who gets to point fingers!" he yelled. "You started this. If you hadn't been pulling the strings from day one, none of us would be in this situation."Let me tell you a little secret. The day we screwed right on top of Elliot's casket, he was awake and heard every second of it. He heard the woman who swore she loved him talk about how much he disgusted her, while she threw herself at his older brother!"Celia's face drained of color, and a blood-curdling shriek tore out of her throat. "Shut up! Shut up, please! Don't say another word!"I watched it unfold with indifference, and my spirit felt entirely drained. Why was I still stuck here, forced to witness their theatrics when I was already dead?Honestly, I kind of wished these two sociopaths would just stay together forever. "I made a terrible mistake. I did something unforgivable."Celia curled into a pathetic ball on the floor as she started to violently dry-heave."Elliot… I killed our baby. I killed you. If you can hear me, make me pay for it. I won't fight you. I won't complain!"I scoffed.I was a ghost, but I didn't have the power to hurt anyone. Otherwise, I would've dragged her down to hell without a second thought. Her assistant spoke with caution."Ms. Ashford, someone else was responsible for Mr. Elliot's death. I've already looked into it. The only person who touched the drug was Mr. Wyatt. "The security footage also shows that on the day Mr. Elliot was buried, Mr. Wyatt had opened the casket. It looks like he said something to Mr. Elliot, and then he removed the food you packed inside."Celia's head snapped up.Her bloodshot eyes stared into the distance, her voice dropping to a bone-chilling whisper. "Wyatt… it was you!"It didn't take long for Wyatt to be dragged before Celia.T

When we returned to the cemetery, it felt as if an invisible hand had closed around my heart.I was only a spirit, yet I still felt like I was suffocating, my skin breaking into a cold sweat as my spirit began to flicker.Being buried alive had to be the absolute worst form of torture. The plot was a total disaster area, my casket having been violently pried open. The inside was covered in human waste, but even that couldn't hide the countless scratches covering the wooden walls. And those were the proof of my fight to stay alive. The sheer brutality of the scene was so overwhelming that Celia could only stand there in a daze. What had she done? She couldn't seem to believe what she was seeing. She had buried me alive for seven whole days. There had been no food and no water, only a narrow casket where I had been forced to curl up in the dark.I had always been terrified of the dark, and I had claustrophobia, too. How desperate must I have been in those final moments?I had

Before long, the Ashford family's security rushed in, restrained Emilia, and hauled her away.Celia's face was bruised from the fight, but she didn't seem to feel it at all.She stumbled toward my body, pulling me into her arms and muttering to herself, "Elliot isn't dead. Get a doctor. Someone call a doctor right now! Why hasn't the drug worn off yet?"While they waited for the doctor, Wyatt approached her with caution, his voice dropping to a soft, comforting whisper."Celia, Elliot is gone. I'm completely heartbroken, too. If only we had gone to dig him up a little sooner… But what's done is done, and we have to focus on the future. Honestly, this actually makes our plan foolproof. Dead men can't talk."But we have to act fast before the rest of the Mercer family catches wind of this. We need to shut Emilia up for good. We'll tell the press she's completely lost her mind from grief and dug up her husband's grave."If my dad finds out about any of this, I'm finished. Celia, you

The wedding venue erupted into chaos."Is Emilia out of her mind? The man's already dead, and she still went to dig him up? That's straight out of a horror movie.""She practically beat Elliot to a pulp every single day he was alive. What, is she planning to keep swinging at him now that he's dead?""Wait, did that guy just say he actually died? What does that mean? Was he still alive when they put him under?"The sudden turn of events sent the guests into a frenzy.Celia stood there for a moment, stunned, before her brows drew together. "What are you talking about? Elliot was already dead when he was buried," she muttered.I sneered.Even now, Celia was still playing her part to perfection. After all, if the truth came out, Wyatt would lose his shot at becoming the heir of the Mercer family. The messenger, panting and wiping the sweat from his forehead, stammered, "I-It's true! I saw it with my own eyes! Emilia dug Mr. Elliot right out of the ground, and the body was already d

Inside the casket, I couldn't tell night from day.Hunger eventually stripped away what was left of my sanity. I bit at the wood and clawed at the lid over and over, desperate to tear my way out, until every single one of my fingernails ripped completely off my fingers. The already thinning oxygen grew heavy with a suffocating, putrid stench as my own waste started piling.I didn't know how many days had passed when I finally died in agony. My soul rose out of my body and drifted up through the earth. For a brief moment, I thought I was finally free, but an invisible force quickly tethered me to Celia's side.I watched with detached, icy eyes as she helped Wyatt pick out his wedding tux."Wyatt, our wedding is just two days away," she said. "It's such a shame. I really wanted Elliot to be there to witness it."She wrapped her arms around Wyatt's neck, a slight frown marring her face as she continued, "Now that I think about it, Elliot should be awake by now. I wonder if the sup

Separated by that heavy slab of wood, my desperate plea never reached Celia's ears."Don't worry, Elliot," she murmured. "Seven days will fly by. No one could hear the way I was screaming inside my own head, and the only answer I got was Celia's cold voice."Wyatt, you're still way too soft," she said.
