Chapter 1

In the darkness, a suffocating weight crashed down on me, sending sharp, agonizing pains radiating through my chest.

It all made sense now.

Celia Ashford had been the one who told my wife, Emilia Sinclair, to abuse me, only to pursue me herself and woo me into giving up everything and faking my death just so we could be together.

The woman who'd promised to marry me was planning to hold a wedding with Wyatt Mercer right after burying me alive.

But I had woken up too early. Worse, there wasn't any food or water in the casket, and the cramped, narrow space was choking the air right out of my lungs.

Through the thick wooden lid above me, Celia's voice sounded muffled, yet her words pierced through the dark like a knife, pinning me to the floor of the casket.

"Back then, when Wyatt's identity as an illegitimate child came to light, his engagement to Emilia ended up going to his younger brother, Elliot.

"Wyatt lost everything that day, so I made it my mission to help him take back his power and status. I promised Wyatt I would always have his back.

"As for Elliot, I've had Emilia hurt him all these years as punishment. Letting him go now is doing him a favor. Besides, he's hopelessly in love with me that he'll spend eternity trapped in the beautiful pipedream I spun for him."

The person beside her hesitated, their voice tinged with a hint of pity.

"But Elliot has no idea that faking a death means an actual, physical burial. Leaving a living person underground for seven whole days is incredibly reckless. On top of that, he's terrified of the dark, and he has claustrophobia. What if something goes wrong inside that—"

"It won't," Celia replied in a tone that brooked no argument. "The Mercers are meticulous, so the performance has to be flawless. It's only seven days. In reality, the sedative will only wear off for two of those days, so what could go wrong?

"Besides, Emilia swore she'd lock him in the closet every time she was done beating him up. He should be used to it by now. Wyatt waited five long years for this opportunity. We need to make sure everything goes off without a hitch.

"Once the dust settles and Wyatt and I are legally married, I'll get a fake marriage certificate overseas to keep Elliot fooled. We'll keep him comfortably taken care of overseas and never let him come back home."

The sound of their footsteps gradually faded, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't make a sound.

The drug had left my mind completely lucid, but I couldn't move a muscle, let alone speak.

As my claustrophobia took hold, I bit the tip of my tongue and forced myself to stay calm, though my back was already soaked with sweat.

The pitch-black darkness reminded me of my five-year marriage to Emilia.

Every single time she mistreated me, she would lock me away in the closet.

The agonizing memories flooded my mind like a tidal wave, causing my stomach to twist into knots.

Two years ago, during another one of those incidents when I was trapped in the closet, Celia had been the one to save me.

The moment she opened the door, I thought I had seen an angel. I truly believed she was the light that would banish the shadows from my life.

From that day forward, Celia pursued me relentlessly.

She tended to my injured body, comforted my broken heart, and told me I had to be brave enough to stand up to Emilia's cruelty.

How pathetic it was that I mistook her for my saving grace.

I had no idea that every bit of suffering I had endured was done at Celia's behest. She instigated Emilia to hurt me, only to play the hero to heal me.

And all of it had been for my older brother, Wyatt.

I bit down hard on my lip, desperately willing my body to move.

All of a sudden, I heard the door click open outside.

The click of a man's leather dress shoes gradually neared, followed by Wyatt's voice.

"Celia, are you sure Elliot will be fine down there for seven days? The burial is scheduled for today. He is my brother, after all. I can't help but feel this is a bit too cruel."

It felt as if I had seen a ray of hope in the dark.

Inwardly, I screamed with everything I had, "Please save me! Please open the casket and look inside. One look is all it'll take for you to realize I'm awake. I don't want to be buried alive, and I don't want to suffocate in the dark!"

Wyatt was caught between hysterical tears and manic laughter, looking completely unhinged as he glared at Celia."You can call me cold-blooded all you want, Celia, but you're the last person on earth who gets to point fingers!" he yelled. "You started this. If you hadn't been pulling the strings from day one, none of us would be in this situation."Let me tell you a little secret. The day we screwed right on top of Elliot's casket, he was awake and heard every second of it. He heard the woman who swore she loved him talk about how much he disgusted her, while she threw herself at his older brother!"Celia's face drained of color, and a blood-curdling shriek tore out of her throat. "Shut up! Shut up, please! Don't say another word!"I watched it unfold with indifference, and my spirit felt entirely drained. Why was I still stuck here, forced to witness their theatrics when I was already dead?Honestly, I kind of wished these two sociopaths would just stay together forever. They

"I made a terrible mistake. I did something unforgivable."Celia curled into a pathetic ball on the floor as she started to violently dry-heave."Elliot… I killed our baby. I killed you. If you can hear me, make me pay for it. I won't fight you. I won't complain!"I scoffed.I was a ghost, but I didn't have the power to hurt anyone. Otherwise, I would've dragged her down to hell without a second thought. Her assistant spoke with caution."Ms. Ashford, someone else was responsible for Mr. Elliot's death. I've already looked into it. The only person who touched the drug was Mr. Wyatt. "The security footage also shows that on the day Mr. Elliot was buried, Mr. Wyatt had opened the casket. It looks like he said something to Mr. Elliot, and then he removed the food you packed inside."Celia's head snapped up.Her bloodshot eyes stared into the distance, her voice dropping to a bone-chilling whisper. "Wyatt… it was you!"It didn't take long for Wyatt to be dragged before Celia.T

When we returned to the cemetery, it felt as if an invisible hand had closed around my heart.I was only a spirit, yet I still felt like I was suffocating, my skin breaking into a cold sweat as my spirit began to flicker.Being buried alive had to be the absolute worst form of torture. The plot was a total disaster area, my casket having been violently pried open. The inside was covered in human waste, but even that couldn't hide the countless scratches covering the wooden walls. And those were the proof of my fight to stay alive. The sheer brutality of the scene was so overwhelming that Celia could only stand there in a daze. What had she done? She couldn't seem to believe what she was seeing. She had buried me alive for seven whole days. There had been no food and no water, only a narrow casket where I had been forced to curl up in the dark.I had always been terrified of the dark, and I had claustrophobia, too. How desperate must I have been in those final moments?I had

Before long, the Ashford family's security rushed in, restrained Emilia, and hauled her away.Celia's face was bruised from the fight, but she didn't seem to feel it at all.She stumbled toward my body, pulling me into her arms and muttering to herself, "Elliot isn't dead. Get a doctor. Someone call a doctor right now! Why hasn't the drug worn off yet?"While they waited for the doctor, Wyatt approached her with caution, his voice dropping to a soft, comforting whisper."Celia, Elliot is gone. I'm completely heartbroken, too. If only we had gone to dig him up a little sooner… But what's done is done, and we have to focus on the future. Honestly, this actually makes our plan foolproof. Dead men can't talk."But we have to act fast before the rest of the Mercer family catches wind of this. We need to shut Emilia up for good. We'll tell the press she's completely lost her mind from grief and dug up her husband's grave."If my dad finds out about any of this, I'm finished. Celia, you

The wedding venue erupted into chaos."Is Emilia out of her mind? The man's already dead, and she still went to dig him up? That's straight out of a horror movie.""She practically beat Elliot to a pulp every single day he was alive. What, is she planning to keep swinging at him now that he's dead?""Wait, did that guy just say he actually died? What does that mean? Was he still alive when they put him under?"The sudden turn of events sent the guests into a frenzy.Celia stood there for a moment, stunned, before her brows drew together. "What are you talking about? Elliot was already dead when he was buried," she muttered.I sneered.Even now, Celia was still playing her part to perfection. After all, if the truth came out, Wyatt would lose his shot at becoming the heir of the Mercer family. The messenger, panting and wiping the sweat from his forehead, stammered, "I-It's true! I saw it with my own eyes! Emilia dug Mr. Elliot right out of the ground, and the body was already d

Inside the casket, I couldn't tell night from day.Hunger eventually stripped away what was left of my sanity. I bit at the wood and clawed at the lid over and over, desperate to tear my way out, until every single one of my fingernails ripped completely off my fingers. The already thinning oxygen grew heavy with a suffocating, putrid stench as my own waste started piling.I didn't know how many days had passed when I finally died in agony. My soul rose out of my body and drifted up through the earth. For a brief moment, I thought I was finally free, but an invisible force quickly tethered me to Celia's side.I watched with detached, icy eyes as she helped Wyatt pick out his wedding tux."Wyatt, our wedding is just two days away," she said. "It's such a shame. I really wanted Elliot to be there to witness it."She wrapped her arms around Wyatt's neck, a slight frown marring her face as she continued, "Now that I think about it, Elliot should be awake by now. I wonder if the sup

Separated by that heavy slab of wood, my desperate plea never reached Celia's ears."Don't worry, Elliot," she murmured. "Seven days will fly by. The sudden light made my eyes sting, and when my vision finally cleared, Wyatt's handsome but subtly twisted face was the first thing I saw.His cheeks were still flushed, and his clothes were a wrinkled mess—the dead giveaway of what he and Celia had just been up to.I looked at him pleadingly, h

No one could hear the way I was screaming inside my own head, and the only answer I got was Celia's cold voice."Wyatt, you're still way too soft," she said.
