Chapter 3

Author: Hazel Lake
Sophie's POV

Outside, a heavy storm had just passed.

I happened to fall straight into a patch of mud. The road was slick, and the more I struggled to get up, the harder it was to stand.

Ian just sat in the car and watched me, his face blank. "See that, Sophie?"

When I looked at him, he let out a cold laugh. "You can barely even stand up without my help. Where could you possibly go if you divorced me?"

Before I could answer, he pulled the car door shut, then drove off. The car shot past me like an arrow loosed from a bow, making mud splatter all over my face.

As my vision went dark, memories of my past with Ian flashed through my mind like a reel of film.

Right after the divorce with Jack, I'd been unable to handle the betrayal and had fallen into severe depression. I couldn't control the urge to hurt myself. If I cut myself once, Ian would give himself two cuts each time he found out.

I had endless sleepless nights, so he had the roof of the villa torn open and replaced with a skylight. He held me in his arms all night while we counted the stars.

When I couldn't eat, he went hungry with me.

After living like that for a year, I finally started to get better. I started to trust him. The day he confessed, he got down on one knee before me and promised that he would never betray me in this lifetime.

I believed him. Yet now, just a year later, his promise had expired.

When my thoughts finally settled, I wiped the mud from my eyes and used the wet sidewalk to push myself up. My clumsy movements made the people passing by laugh.

Shame and panic burned through me as I frantically hailed a cab. At last, a driver was willing to take me despite how filthy I looked, but only if I paid upfront, plus an extra 200 dollars.

I agreed without hesitation. But when it was time to pay, I was told my card had just been frozen; I couldn't use a single cent.

The moment I was kicked out of the car, the skies opened up again. Rain poured down on me, stinging and numbing all at once.

I didn't know how long I'd walked like that before I finally made it back to my home with Ian. I pushed the door open, and my mind went completely blank.

A pair of high heels and a pair of leather shoes were tangled together on the floor. Lacy lingerie and a black suit jacket were lying in a heap.

Ian held Jessica in his arms by the window and kissed her passionately. For a second, the scene in front of me overlapped perfectly with what I'd seen five years ago.

A broken, off-key howl tore out of my throat before I even realized I was making a sound. My hands and feet shook so hard that they didn't feel like they belonged to me.

The noise disturbed Ian and Jessica. He frowned in annoyance. "What are you freaking out about? It's not like this is the first time you've seen something like this."

Jessica let out a mocking laugh. "Long time no see, Sophie. I misspoke on the phone, you know. Ian is way better than Jake."

Her words clearly pleased him. "You've got good taste."

He chuckled and walked toward me. But the closer he came, the worse I shook. Finally, when he reached out to me, I suddenly doubled over and started vomiting uncontrollably.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw him go rigid for a split second. Then, his voice drifted into my ear, low and chilling. "Do you find me disgusting, Sophie?"

Sophie's POVIan didn't manage to catch up with me. He missed me by just a few seconds. I'd just gotten into the cab when he rushed out the door.He chased after the car for a long time, only stopping when he had completely run out of strength. Then, he kept calling me.I didn't pick up.Yesterday, we'd gone to the courthouse to ensure the divorce was formalized. I told him that after we held the wedding today, we would go to City Hall to register our marriage. It would be a double celebration. He foolishly believed me.I didn't feel any joy in tricking him. All I felt was a bottomless, aching emptiness.I'd heard Patricia's encouragement when I was lying on the operating table, ready to die. During our sessions, she'd already seen how dependent I was on Ian. She'd tried, gently, to warn me, but I'd refused to listen. It wasn't until I was flat on that operating table, hearing her say the same words again, that my mindset finally shifted. In that moment, what pushed me to live

"Ian, I think I remembered something."He froze, his expression impossible to read."I remembered that you love mangoes. Before you got off work every day, you'd call me and ask me to prepare some for you."It was as if a bucket of ice water had been dumped over his head, making his blood freeze. Jack was the one who loved mangoes. What Sophie had remembered was something between her and Jack. When Ian didn't respond, Sophie looked at him in confusion. "Why aren't you eating? Did I remember it wrong? But I clearly remember my husband loving this. Don't tell me I have another husband somewhere.""Of course not! It's me. I'm the one who loves mangoes. I'm just so happy I don't know what to do," Ian hastily said.

Third-Person POVOf course, seeing the marriage certificate in such a state set Sophie off.For some reason, losing her memory had made her temper a lot worse too. She grabbed everything she could lift and hurled it at Ian, her eyes red as she accused, "You can't even keep our marriage certificate safe. You don't love me at all! I want a divorce!"The word "divorce" made Ian panic. He dropped to his knees on the spot and tried to explain. "It's my fault that this happened, but we can get it reissued. I swear I'll take good care of it this time. Please believe me, okay?"Finally, after he begged on his knees for a long time and transferred an eight-figure sum to her without any conditions, Sophie relented. She agreed to go with him to have their marriage certificate reissued on the day she was discharged from the hospital. But when they got into the car, she sat in the backseat.Thinking of how she always got carsick back there, Ian chuckled and asked, "Babe, have you forgotten th

He fired off questions nonstop. "Sophie, you're awake. Do you feel okay?"She faltered for a moment. Her hands, hidden under the blanket, balled into tight fists. After a moment, she shook her head and asked curiously, "Who are you?"Ian stiffened. Then, his heart raced with wild joy. While waiting for Sophie to wake up, he'd gone over countless versions of apologies and explanations in his head, mentally prepared to pursue her all over again. The one thing he hadn't expected was that she would lose her memory and forget everything. Somehow, that gave him a chance to start over.He forced himself to tamp down the thrill in his chest. "I'm your husband. We just registered our marriage last week. Our wedding is scheduled for the end of this month."He paused, then added, "But a few days ago, you accidentally fell

The more it hurt, the more it twisted into hate. It didn't help that Jessica kept fanning the flames, going on and on about Sophie and Jack's past, trying to lure Ian into resentment."Don't you think this is unfair to you? You've loved Sophie for so long, but she only chose you after settling for second best. If it were me, I'd definitely get even."The next message she sent was a revealing selfie.
