Chapter 1

Author: Hazel Lake
Sophie Lowell's POV

I felt like an invisible hand had clamped around my throat. It was a long time before I finally found my voice again. When I did, it shook. "Why?"

Why would Ian Colson cheat on me, then still go through with registering our marriage? Why would he wait until the happiest moment of my life to tear it all apart with the truth?

Ian froze for a second. Then, he suddenly burst out laughing. "You win."

I stared at him, completely lost.

A second later, a familiar woman's voice floated out from the car speakers. "Then you have to use my favorite strawberry-flavored one tonight, okay?"

My eyes widened in shock. I felt the blood in my veins turn to ice.

"I made a bet with Jessica about how you would react when you found out I was cheating. I said you would slap me, and she said you would ask me why," Ian said lightly. "If I win, she wears black stockings. If she wins…"

He lifted a brow. "Well, you heard her."

As his words fell, Jessica Hore's voice came from the speakers again. "It's been five years, Sophie, but you're still just as pathetic as I remember. But I'll give you this—you've still got fantastic taste in men. I like this one a lot too."

The mocking laughter that followed made my limbs go numb. For a moment, it was like I'd been dragged straight back to five years ago.

I'd ended a business trip early and was planning on surprising my then-husband, Jake Quill, for his birthday. But when I opened the door, I walked in on him and Jessica tangled up together by the window.

He went pale when he saw me and was completely at a loss. Jessica, on the other hand, just lit a cigarette, looking smug.

She said, "Sorry, Sophie. The single life gets lonely. I borrowed your husband for a bit."

Back then, I'd reacted the same way as I had now. I'd cried and asked them both, "Why?"

But as their mouths opened and closed, explaining, it was as if my ears were stuffed with cotton. I couldn't hear a single word.

Suddenly, their faces went white, and they both shouted at me. A sharp pain tore through my lower abdomen, so bad that it made me double over. That was when I came back to myself and looked down. I saw blood pouring down my legs, bright and shocking.

That day, I lost the three most important people in my life—the best friend I'd had for ten years, the husband I'd been married to for one year, and the three-month-old baby in my womb.

Sophie's POVIan didn't manage to catch up with me. He missed me by just a few seconds. I'd just gotten into the cab when he rushed out the door.He chased after the car for a long time, only stopping when he had completely run out of strength. Then, he kept calling me.I didn't pick up.Yesterday, we'd gone to the courthouse to ensure the divorce was formalized. I told him that after we held the wedding today, we would go to City Hall to register our marriage. It would be a double celebration. He foolishly believed me.I didn't feel any joy in tricking him. All I felt was a bottomless, aching emptiness.I'd heard Patricia's encouragement when I was lying on the operating table, ready to die. During our sessions, she'd already seen how dependent I was on Ian. She'd tried, gently, to warn me, but I'd refused to listen. It wasn't until I was flat on that operating table, hearing her say the same words again, that my mindset finally shifted. In that moment, what pushed me to live

"Ian, I think I remembered something."He froze, his expression impossible to read."I remembered that you love mangoes. Before you got off work every day, you'd call me and ask me to prepare some for you."It was as if a bucket of ice water had been dumped over his head, making his blood freeze. Jack was the one who loved mangoes. What Sophie had remembered was something between her and Jack. When Ian didn't respond, Sophie looked at him in confusion. "Why aren't you eating? Did I remember it wrong? But I clearly remember my husband loving this. Don't tell me I have another husband somewhere.""Of course not! It's me. I'm the one who loves mangoes. I'm just so happy I don't know what to do," Ian hastily said.

Third-Person POVOf course, seeing the marriage certificate in such a state set Sophie off.For some reason, losing her memory had made her temper a lot worse too. She grabbed everything she could lift and hurled it at Ian, her eyes red as she accused, "You can't even keep our marriage certificate safe. You don't love me at all! I want a divorce!"The word "divorce" made Ian panic. He dropped to his knees on the spot and tried to explain. "It's my fault that this happened, but we can get it reissued. I swear I'll take good care of it this time. Please believe me, okay?"Finally, after he begged on his knees for a long time and transferred an eight-figure sum to her without any conditions, Sophie relented. She agreed to go with him to have their marriage certificate reissued on the day she was discharged from the hospital. But when they got into the car, she sat in the backseat.Thinking of how she always got carsick back there, Ian chuckled and asked, "Babe, have you forgotten th

He fired off questions nonstop. "Sophie, you're awake. Do you feel okay?"She faltered for a moment. Her hands, hidden under the blanket, balled into tight fists. After a moment, she shook her head and asked curiously, "Who are you?"Ian stiffened. Then, his heart raced with wild joy. While waiting for Sophie to wake up, he'd gone over countless versions of apologies and explanations in his head, mentally prepared to pursue her all over again. The one thing he hadn't expected was that she would lose her memory and forget everything. Somehow, that gave him a chance to start over.He forced himself to tamp down the thrill in his chest. "I'm your husband. We just registered our marriage last week. Our wedding is scheduled for the end of this month."He paused, then added, "But a few days ago, you accidentally fell

The more it hurt, the more it twisted into hate. It didn't help that Jessica kept fanning the flames, going on and on about Sophie and Jack's past, trying to lure Ian into resentment."Don't you think this is unfair to you? You've loved Sophie for so long, but she only chose you after settling for second best. If it were me, I'd definitely get even."The next message she sent was a revealing selfie. Ian, in a moment of sheer madness, went to meet her.On his way home afterward, he didn't forget to buy Sophie her favorite pastries.
