LOGINGold eyes burned in the dark, close and unblinking.
"Move your hands," the stranger growled, his voice a lethal rasp against my neck.
"I'm sorry..." My fingers tangled in his shirt before my brain could stop them. "I don't know why I..."
A deep, terrifying growl rumbled in his chest, vibrating straight through my bones.
"Please..." I whispered, my knees giving out. "Help me."
This is wrong. Why am I leaning in?
What exactly am I doing??
His broad shoulders loomed over me in the shadows like a wall of solid stone.
He didn't release my throat. He dragged me higher against the wall until my toes barely touched the floor.
"Are the she-wolves of the Shadow Flint Pack now throwing themselves at strangers just to get over their heat?" His tone was merciless, cutting through me like a razor.
"It's not..." My head slammed back against the stone. "I'm not..."
"When did it start?" he snapped, his grip tightening on my jaw until it bruised.
"Wine," I rasped, struggling to breathe. "Victoria forced... the wine was spiked."
"Why this room?" He shoved me deeper into the corner, his presence terrifying, suffocating.
"The handle was unlatched," I slurred, terror battling the fog in my brain.
"You expect me to believe you stumbled in here by accident?" he barked, his face inches from mine. "Speak!"
"I hit someone!" I gasped, shaking violently under his weight. "With a lamp!"
He went deathly still, his gold eyes narrowing into dangerous slits.
"Did you," he said, his voice dropping into a cold threat.
He's right about how this looks. I've heard it my whole life. Throwing myself at things I can't have.
"He was in my room," I choked out, my arms falling uselessly to my sides. "They trapped me... to break my oath to Alpha Tristan."
The stranger’s grip on my neck shifted, dragging me forward until my chest pressed against his.
"To Alpha Tristan," he growled softly.
"Please," I sobbed, the heat in my blood burning out of control. "It's poison. Please."
"Walk," he commanded, ripping me off the wall and hauling me forward by my upper arm.
"Where are you taking—"
"Shut your mouth."
He dragged me through an archway and into a cold marble bathroom. Without a single word, he hoisted me by my waist and slammed me sideways into the clawfoot tub.
The icy water hit me like a physical blow.
I went under, my heavy dress dragging me down into the freezing depths.
I thrashed frantically, my hands clawing at the porcelain as I dragged my head above the surface, coughing and choking on cold water.
"What did you..." I gasped, my teeth clicking together so hard my jaw ached. "Why would you do that!"
He stood over the tub like an executioner, his dark silhouette blocking the light, his arms folded tight over his broad chest. He stared down at me with utter contempt.
I can think. Why can I think?
The freezing water was slicing straight through the thick, poisoned haze of the wine.
"It works," he said, his voice flat, devoid of an ounce of sympathy.
I shivered violently, gripping the edge of the tub to keep from sinking. That was when I caught a glimpse of his right hand resting against his thigh.
To my surprise,
A thin line of fresh, dark blood was trickling down his palm, dripping off his knuckles and hitting the white tile. He held his fist clenched so tight his skin was pale, as if he had been cutting into his own flesh just to keep him from touching me.
I am back on my feet, pacing the narrow length of my basement room—three steps and turn, three steps and turn. The thin white gown is crushed tight in one of my trembling fists, and the metallic echo of the iron gate bell is still ringing violently inside my skull like a striking anvil. Every strike of that bell feels like a slow, deliberate countdown to my own execution, rattling through the damp floorboards and vibrating up through the cold soles of my bare feet."He won't let me out of his sight," I whisper to the empty, shadow-draped walls, my mind racing in frantic, exhausted circles. Not to the town school. Not to the local market. Not even past the wrought-iron outer gates of the estate grounds. He stands by the window and watches the front entrance like a hawk the moment he returns home from pack council business. And yet Vivian can roam the territory as she pleases... and Victoria can do whatever twisted thing she wishes without a single word of reprimand or correction. "Beca
A soft knock raps against the wood, so quiet and restrained it could easily be a trick of the draft. My head jerks up from the edge of the bed. I cross the small room in three silent strides, yank the curtain aside with a desperate hand, and confirm the thin, accusing rays of morning light slanting across the courtyard. Then the voice cuts through the door panels, flat and devoid of warmth:"Miss Aurora. Open the door."It sounds like an absolute command, not a request."Who is it?" I whisper back, my throat tight."Open it," the voice insists.I hesitate, my heart hammering against my ribs. I smooth my hair down frantically with both trembling hands, double-check that the white shirt is buried safely beneath the mattress, and straighten my spine as much as I am able before turning the iron handle.I pull the door open to reveal Greta, Lady Victoria’s personal maid. She stands in the dim corridor with her hair a brilliant, immaculate red, her uniform pristine and unwrinkled. She looks
I laid on my back on the narrow mattress, staring up at the stained ceiling tiles while my eyes burn from sheer exhaustion. A faint, dry scratch comes from somewhere above my head, rattling through the lath and plaster. I sit bolt upright, my muscles tensing for a fight. It is only a rat, or the metal of the old gravity pipes expanding in the damp basement chill. I lie back down, and my hand flies automatically to my throat, pressing flat against the pulse there.Still dark. Still dark.I turn onto my right side, the thin wool blanket scratching against my bare skin. The silence in the basement is absolute, heavy and suffocating. I turn back onto my left side, then onto my stomach, burying my face in the lumpy pillow before giving up entirely with a soft, frustrated sigh. I press the heel of my hand hard to my chest, then over my mouth to muffle my shallow breathing. My fingers drift to the edge of the cheap cotton blanket, picking mindlessly at the fraying hem until a long, grey thre
I pressed my back flat against the cold, damp wallpaper of the service corridor, my right hand planted firmly against the dark wood paneling to steady my shaking legs.Heavy boot steps and the sharp, static crackle of a guard's radio rounded the far corner of the subterranean passage. I stopped breathing entirely, locking my lungs.Don't move. Don't be big. Just blend into the wall.I hated that the humiliating thought even existed in my mind, but years of deep muscle memory under Victor's roof took over instantly. I pulled my arms tight over my stomach, trying desperately to make my heavy, plus-sized frame as small and invisible as humanly possible in the narrow, shadowed hallway."Keep walking," I whispered fiercely to the dark floorboards beneath my feet. "Please, just keep walking past me.""Nothing on four," a guard muttered into his handheld radio, his dull voice heavy with boredom as his heavy boots clicked past my hiding spot without a sideways glance. "Tristan can look for th
"We... we didn't know it was you, My Lord," the first guard stammered out, his rough voice cracking violently mid-sentence as the sheer, suffocating weight of the man's primal growl crushed down upon him. His eyes were blown wide with pure, unadulterated panic, locked entirely onto the tattooed black wolf and crowned crest stretched across the broad, powerful back right in front of him. "Forgive us! We had no idea you were quartered in this suite!""Wrong room! Completely wrong room!" the second guard squeaked out in sheer terror, stumbling backward into the corridor so fast his heavy boots caught on the wooden doorframe, nearly throwing him flat on his back in his frantic haste to escape the terrifying presence towering over them. They practically scrambled over one another to grab the handle and pull the heavy oak door shut, the latch catching with a sharp, desperate click that echoed loudly through the quiet suite like a gunshot.I stood completely frozen in the stranger's firm arm
Aurora's POV.... "Search by order of Alpha Tristan!" a harsh, grating voice barked from the corridor outside, followed by two heavy, authoritative thumps against the wooden door that rattled my teeth. "Every single room on this wing!" I whipped my head around toward the tall, dark man standing over me in the shadows. His face was completely blank, an impenetrable wall of cold, unfeeling marble. His striking icy blue eyes were steady, sharp, and utterly detached. He didn't flinch at the loud noise echoing through the suite. He didn't even bother to turn his head toward the door to acknowledge the threat. "Open up for inspection, please!" the guard demanded from the hallway, his tone threatening. "I offered," I whispered, my trembling voice breaking as raw terror clawed frantically at the back of my throat. "You said... please." He said absolutely nothing in response. He didn't even offer me a passing glance to reassure me. My fingers twisted tightly into the damp hem of his white
